This looks like it will be the best one yet and definitely have the most powerful impact .

May 15, 2002 -- "In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11/01"
Sunday, May 26 at 9pm on HBO

LIKE thousands of other New Yorkers, my friend Louis Viel who lives downtown walked out of his house on his way to work on the morning of Sept. 11.

He was expecting to grab a cup of coffee, and then stop by the local photo shop. That's why he had his camera with him.

Then the first plane struck. He instinctively raised it to record what his eyes knew couldn't be real. Hundreds of other people who live, work or were visiting Wall Street that morning also happened to have their cameras with them and did the same thing.

"In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11/01," a brutal, overwhelmingly heart-wrenching documentary by HBO, is made up of those shots - film, tape and still photos - of 115 amateur and professionals who just happened to be there when hell happened.

Make no mistake. This is not a whitewashed version. This is not some awful Hollywood reproduction of the events - this is the real deal.

Yes, we do see people flying out of the windows, we do see them smashed on the ground. We do hear screams, and see terror and horror beyond our wildest imaginings.

We also see people being calmer than you can imagine, people more courageous than you can calculate, and sadder than you can begin to estimate.

It was the worst of times, and the best of us.

The questions will inevitably arise whether or not this is exploitation. Is it too soon to see the horror? Are the terrorist attacks now being used as entertainment?

Let me be the first to answer. No, no and no.

What this harsh, ugly film shows us is the reality of terror. It shows us that this day should never, ever be turned into a national holiday with 9/11 White Sales at Macy's.

It shows us that we must never forget what happened and never forgive the animals who did this.

Did it rip my guts out? You bet.

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, while not the narrator exactly, does act as the guide - with camera footage of the mayor and his staff from the second they realized what had happened, through the first horror-filled days.

Also on record is the former fire commissioner, Thomas Van Essen, and former police commissioner, Bernard Kerik, Operations Chief Joe Lhota, and Beth Petrone, an exec assistant to the mayor, whose husband, Capt. Terry Hatton, died that day.

Petrone even says, "I was grabbing the dust, thinking he was in the dust." If that doesn't break your heart, you have none.

Also on hand to speak is the mayor's girlfriend Judith Nathan telling us that Rudy went home that night and, to put things in perspective, read about Winston Chruchill.

It is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. And it's also necessary.

So, before you read about exploitation, let me point out that the archives of the production will be donated to the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York, where it can be screened by the general public forever.

The score, chosen and recorded by the New York Philharmonic, is breathtaking.

Brad Grey Productions and HBO should be very proud of themselves - for realizing that all that footage was out there somewhere and bringing it all together.

I hope someday there will be another film - this one devoted to the Port Authority police who lost their lives, and the Army National Guard units who secured the area without even ammunition for their guns. And all the little-known stories of courage and help that we might not otherwise ever know about.

This is a necessary and needed film. The real heroes speak for themselves.

For those of you interested, here is David Bianculli's review in NY Daily News:A Fitting 'Memoriam'
HBO special conveys
sights, sounds of 9/11

I missed the CBS special, and I stayed away from some of these; this one, however, seems worth watching - especially because it is on HBO

I'll miss it cause it's on my B-Day... I'm glad though, why do they make shows about this? Why be reminded of all this shit? I guessing 9 months 'til the movie on 9/11 comes out.

I agree with the above post. How many times do we have to see those towers falling and people running for their lives? It's depressing, there is no need for special after special.

I couldn't watch it. I took calls from inside the towers from the time the first plane hit till just ater the first tower came down. One of the last calls I took, I never got the words "Fire Department" out of my mouth when the lady said, "never mind, he just jumped." I watched the one on CBS (unedited) and saw faces of friends I lost as they were going to their deaths. Captain Hatton was a friend of mine and I saw him the Saturday night before this happened. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to watch it but I still think it's too early for me. Although I do wonder if they took any of the calls I answered and put them on it.

For those of you in New York this may still be too soon, but I think the rest of the country needs this. We are moving on too soon and the sting from the tragedy has become numb. Already the cries for justice in the Middle East have died down and groups are starting to be concerned for terrorists in prison. Here, in Seattle, little effort is needed to get into the highest floors of the tallest building west of the Mississippi. A good kick to the senses may be what we need for the outrage to return.

That being said, I wish I had HBO.

WOW! I just watched this special and it had me in tears all over again. It was one of the most moving, intense, heartbreaking things I've seen since the attacks.

Watching everything unfold the way it did and the devastating aftermath made it feel like 9/11 all over again.

If you missed the special and they replay it, I recommend watching it. Our society must never get that lazy and complacent ever again or we'll be doomed to repeat history.

FWIW, they interviewed his wife, and did a nice job. It wasn't all blood and guts (although some things obviously were disturbing)

They had unprecedented access to Mayor Guiliani & his staffers for interviews, they had all sorts of video/photo sources, and they not only portrayed the devastation, but the mourning after.
very well done and tactful.

As Guiliani put it, it is important not to edit it, for that might diminish the impact and cause some to forget. And we should never forget.

I watched this special last night and I have to commend HBO. I agree that maybe this special is still too soon and too in your face with some of the scenes for people who were there or who lost loved ones, but I am in San Jose and I see how people who were not affected can forget so easily. The rest of the country seems to have moved on and needs to be reminded of what happened on 9/11. The footage in the special was amazing and heartbreaking. I think the toughest part for me was scenes after scenes of the funerals for the fallen heroes. If you didn't get to see this special the first time around I really recommend taking some time out and seeing it when HBO replays it.

Special thanks to Austin for the Kick Ass Sig Pic!

i watched it... twice actually ((taped it)). i had to keep leaving the room... it was a well done documentary... just reliving the day... awful. called my half bro in ireland and cried on the phone w/ him for a lil while. i can't explain it guys. it just sucks to keep remembering that so many people... just aren't coming back.

and sblueman, i know what you mean being far removed from it. i try explaining it to friends in michigan and all over... but they just dont get it... ugh. i do believe the special will replay a lot though, so i do encourage you to see it if you didn't already. only if you can stomach it all over again.
