I'd like to burn my girlfriend's copy of Titanic.

My advice is to burn it somewhere where
you won't inhale the plastic fumes. Don't do it
in your garage for example. Driveways and
parking lots work best, just throw it in a paint
can with some kerosene, light fire, get away.

Yes, there is such a thing as a DVD burner, they are quite expensive (like $1500), and blank DVDs are about $20 a piece. You might want to look into DivX encoding. You could possibly copy the DVD to MPEG format, and then burn it on a CD-R as a VCD.

If you have a burner, wouldn't you have the software to do this already? Try download.com
Adaptec or Nero work well. You can pretty much copy any files to a CD.

CD-R are good for just about everything.
CD-RW are good for music if your CD player can handle it. Older units won't - I have a portable discman than can play cdr/cdrw. I can change the mix whenever I feel like it. CDR are cheaper when you buy them by the spindle, they should cost about 25 cents a piece.(meaning NO jewel cases). CompUSA has frequent sales on them. More people have burners so the price of blanks have been dropping

DVD are a different issue, I sort of remember there was site that helped in burning these. Something 2000 - I wish I could recall. I need to contact a friend that may know

chris77160, its NOT like burning a CD-R. Kid Afrika is right about the cost (I looked into it) plus you need some SERIOUS horse power on your PC.

Pioneer makes a DVD-R drive for about $1,500 - 2000. Apple sells a G$ with a 733 processor and a DVD-r drive, for about 4k. You also need software to do it. Apple uses DVDpro or iDVD. Disks are dropping in price to about $10 in bulk, but you'd have to know which type works with what drive and if it was compatable with your home player.
Wait a year until the standards are settled (Sony has a competing format) and the prices come down, unless you're a multimedia producer.

Chris, the person who called in was talking about VCDs. There's a thread in the gaming section about creating VCDs here. Most DVD players can play VCDs.

Im good at the VCD/SVCD creating its not that hard and WinDVD as well as PowerDVD always play them for your PC DVD drive as for the TV DVD thats a bit differant, not all of them play them. Apex Digital is currently the best TV DVD player to play your SVCD/VCDs with

Go to www.VCDhelp.com, that should really help you. VCD's are basically a VHS tape on a CD. This means it has no special features or menus, but the sound and visual quality is much better.

Compaq is selling a computer with a DVD burner for about 2,500. If you like compaqs maybe you should look into it. But now the price isn't good. Even if you could afford the burner. It just doesn't make sense to spend $20 for a blank dvd-r when you go get the boxed copy of the movie. Eventually in a year or two the price will go down. The only feasible solution now is to make a VCD.
