I know that it's been brought up before, and we've seen how many users are members of the armed forces. But as it is Memorial Day, I thought it would be a good idea if we thought about other veterans we know.

Is anyone in your family a veteran? If you don't know, go ask.

For me, my grandfather on my father's side was a sargeant in the army during the second world war, and fought in Europe. He fought across France and Germany and was at Remagen when the Ludendorff Bridge was captured. He won a bronze star, which we have framed with his other medals in the living room. I keep his dog tags & Eisenhower jacket in my closet.

My grandfather on my mother's side was in the navy at the time. He was serving on a destroyer in the South Pacific heading to join up with the invasion task force being assembled to invade Japan when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

I believe in the Faith... that can save me.
I believe in the hope and I pray...
That someday it may raise me... above these badlands

My father served in the Korean war and I have some of his medals. His three older brothers all served in WWII- one worked in intelligence and continued to work for the CIA until a few years ago (and had been MIA at one point during the war), one was a fighter pilot (still has all his flight gear) and the other was in charge of a large communications and transport station in Europe. Their stories are incredible.

The person I consider my grandfather (long story) fought in World War II and lead a charge into “No Man’s Land” taking out an entire position of the enemy. Some World War II books stated that charge was a decided factor in winning the war (obviously debatable). The wall of his living room approximately 25 x 10 was lined with metals. When he died, you could not actually see the wall anymore, just metals.

I did not keep the metals his family did, but I have the ½ dollar that was in his shirt pocket for good luck, which stopped a bullet and saved his life.

The said part to this story, he died broke.

Thank for this topic Froy.

My father fought in Vietnam as a Marine and was part of the Khe Sanh battle, which is remembered as one of the most famous and controversial battles of the Vietnam War.

My brother was in the Army during the Gulf War, but was lucky enough to be based in Germany at the time.

One of my uncles was a mercenary in Cuba, another uncle was a Marine right before Vietnam started, my cousin was in the Army, and her husband is an Army lifer.

My grandfather, who passed away last fall, served in the Navy during the Korean War. My dad has Pappy's medals and uniform prominently displayed in his den.

Also, an uncle did two tours of Vietnam before his 20th birthday. To this day he's never discussed what he went through over there.

My grandfather was in the Army during the Korean War. He was in Korea from 1950-54. He recieved numerous commendations and five Bronze Stars. He had a Luger he pulled off of a Korean soldier, but he got rid of it after he had kids. We still have the bullets though.

He died when I was six. I never had a chance to ask him about any of the stuff.

I probably won't ever learn anything about it either, because there was a big fire in the depository where a lot of the records were kept about 30 years ago. His records fall under the categories that were reported destroyed.

Use all your well-learned politesse, or I'll lay your soul to waste.

All right, children. Let's all point and laugh.

My father won't talk about Vietnam either! He was a chaplain's assistant, and thoiugh he never saw combat he sent back a lot of bodies.

Both my natural grandfathers and my step-grandfather fought in WWII

My Grandfather (mothers side) was a medic in the Army. He never speaks of what he had seen but won several commendations, though I have not seen them.

My Grandfather my fathers’ side was a "Frogman" (the unit that later became the SEAL team). He has never spoken about his experiences either but part of his job was to swim into an enemy port and draw the locations of ships. He has normal before the war and fucked up in the head after. (edit: Found out he won the Navy Cross)

Step-Grandfather: He was in Czechoslovakian Army (and Jewish) at the break of the invasion. He also did not speak of the war but I learned that he never surrendered and wound up traveling all over Europe.

My grandfather was in WWII. The only action he saw was one time he was patroling and he heard a noise. He called out, but wasn't responded to, so he opened fire killing a cow. A true hero.

“The window burns to light the way back home. A light that warms no matter where they've gone. They're off to find the hero of the day. But what if they should fall by someone's wicked way. Still the window burns. Time so slowly turns. And someone there is sighing. Keepers of the flames. Do ya feel your name? Can't you hear your babies crying? Mama they try and break me. Still they try and break me. 'Scuze me while I tend to how I feel. These things return to me that still seem real. Now deservingly this easy chair. But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair. Don't want your aid. But the first I've make. For years can't hold or feel. No, I'm not all me. So please excuse me. While I tend to how I feel. But now the dreams and waking screams. That ever last the night. So build the wall, behind the crawl. And hide until it's light. So can you hear your babies cryin' now? Still the window burns. Time so slowly turns. And someone there is sighing. Keepers of the flames. Do ya feel your name? Can't you hear your babies crying?” - Metallica

My father lied about his age and joined the navy during the tail end of vietnam. He served as a SEAL, whcih made life difficult for my grandmother, who was always told he was stationed in Germany, she always wonedered why he never returned her letters. She later learned the he "wasn't" in cambodia. Broke his heart when i joined the Army, but then again, I never did like my old man much.

My Grandfather on my mother's side served in the Army Air Corps (now the U.S. Air Force) during WWII. He was fairly well decorated, but extremely well loved. He died about 7 years ago, coincidently the only funeral that has ever shaken me up. It was a full military funeral. The bagpipes had my heart pounding, but the color guard and the 21 gun salute is what really choked me up.

My father was drafted into the Army during the time of Vietnam, but got his knee fucked up in training. By the time it healed fully, he had only a month or two left on his tour, they diced to keep him here running the mess hall rahter than send him over.

My sister is Air Force Reserve.

My grandfather on my mother's side lied about his age to join the Navy at 17. He hasn't talked to anyone about it except my father ( they are very close). Apparently he was stationed in the North Pacific. Stewart, Alaska to be specific. The stories are horrible. They used to have to scrape thier dead off the hull of the ship in the winter when they fell overboard. Bodies would actually freeze there.
I actually got to go to Alaska with him and my father when I was 14. We went to where the ship used to dock in Stewart. It was very moving for us, and emotional for him, to say the least.

Both Grandfathers served in WW2. I was in the Coast Guard from 1992-1996.(Let the tooling begin) My first 2 yrs were spent sailing around Cuba and Haiti looking for smugglers and illegal migrants. My last two yrs were on the Jersey Shore, (Point Pleasant and Sandy Hook) at lifeboat stations. As much as I hated the last 2 yrs it gave me the experience I needed for my present job. My brother was Army Reserve for a few yrs and my cousin and her husband were both in the Army.

My Grandfather (Father's side) was a Marine in the Pacific during WWII. He landed on just about every famous beach in that theater of the war. I never saw any decorations and never heard him speak about the war. Apparently, though, during his long struggle with cancer, he told my cousin all about his experiences, which were absolutely devastating.

My brother was a paratrooper right between Iraq and Afganistan. The only thing his experience had in common with my Grandfather's is that they both turned into raging alcoholics.

I saw a couple of you say you don't really know what your grandfather/uncle/dad did in the WWII/Nam/Korea. Ask. Someday you'll learn (as I have) that this guy was a hero and you never thanked him and it will eat at you for years and years.

My uncle was a B-17 pilot and a B-29 co-pilot in the pacific campaign in WWII.About 2 months before the end of the war, they flew into a thunderhead and did not fly out.

My dad got pulled off a troop train, because he knew chemistry, and spent the war teaching chemical warfare at Camp Siebert in Alabama.

My other uncle joined the Navy, got in,then they found out he was almost blind;he spent 10 days peeling potatoes and got a honorable discharge!

Another uncle served in the engine room of a destroyer in the Korean war;30 years later,he got asbestosis of the lungs from this and died.

My grandfather got chlorine-gassed in the trenches in France in WWI,but recovered.

One of my great-great(great?) grandfathers had his arm blown off at the shoulder in the Civil War and lived;I have a photo of him,he lived into his 80's.

A relative of mine was a corporal in the Revolutionary War.

My cousin was a F-18(16?;can't remember) pilot off the George Washington in Desert Storm;he is a pilot trainer now.
