I read an interesting article in the Daily News this morning. The main point of it was that people are grieving over the death of a man (who was essentially a criminal and a murderer) like he was an American icon that should be looked upon with respect and adulation. What got me about the article was at some point a firetruck passed by and on the truck was a list of various names of fallen Firefighters from 9/11 - the siren was blaring, and no-one seemed to notice them.

I never really paid much attention to the mob, but I find it disturbing that people actually look up to this man as someone to admire. He didn't do the things he did (allegedly or otherwise) to help anyone else but himself and those close to him in his family. So why the praise? If you ask me, there should be NO coverage of his funeral, save a handful of cameras, and let him and his so-called legacy die.

It just goes to show how some people really need a reality check on their priorities, and how we as Americans just sit back and soak it all up from the media. Let's see how fast another Gotti movie comes out, just to live off the hype his death is getting.

Yeah i'm thinking the same thing. He was a mob boss, not mother teresa. On ron and fez the night he died, one guy made a joke and they cut him off. saying "its not respectful".

When OJ or someone else with nortieriety dies, will we give a shit? I dont about Gotti, he whacked people and did other white collar crime.

Maybe people watch too much of the sopranos.

Same thing for The Godfather movies.

We are fascinated by the mob. Every guy wants to be a made man. We all say, "Forget about it."

In this context, I agree with you, but I think people take Hollywood and the media in general too seriously. The wrong types of people are being glorified. Look, I watch the Sopranos and find it to be very entertaining - but thats my point. I see it as entertainment. If people in real life were to pull what those guys on the show pull, I would hope that they get caught and/or prosecuted for their actions, just like I would be if I were to kill or rob someone.

I don't know, I haven't really thought much about 9/11 in the past few months, but seeing how Gotti essentially dying a broken, sick man and getting coverage like he's the President just makes me wonder - would he have gotten the same coverage if he died the same week? Or the week after that? How about a month later? And if not, would it have been because that would have been in "poor taste"? What makes it not "poor-taste" now? How do the families of those he whacked feel seeing him mourned like this?

Don't mind me, I'm just really emotional lately (serious dieting and quitting smoking will do that to ya) but this just rubbed me the wrong way.

Yes. Especially when I saw a Fox reporter(can't remember which) went to the dry cleaner who cleaned his burial suit and asked him what type of suit it was. I thought that was extremely odd....

They just had some guy on MSNBC who got shot five times by Gotti's men. After listening to what he had to say, I have decided to take back all the things I said in a previous thread about admiring him. I won't go so far as to call him an asshole, but I have lost much respect for him.

Use all your well-learned politesse, or I'll lay your soul to waste.

All right, children. Let's all point and laugh.

Funny, I haven't seen 1 minute of coverage - except the titles of a few posts, I know nothing. I like it that way.

Refusing to watch/read the news was the best decision I ever made.

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

My take on this is simple.

Not cracking jokes about him or cutting them off R&F is fine.

Whatever he was in life to most people, he still was loved by his family. Some of whom were not involved in "the family" at all. So you want to censor jokes about him to show them a little respect as they grieve....that's fine.

On the other hand, praising him as great man is also kinda bullshit too. Did he help some of those in his community? Yes. But he also caused quite a few of them sorrow and pain.

The media should cover him with some respect towards his family shown, without hiding what he really was. There is no need to follow his family around to the funeral homes,ect... At the same time, they should always remind those who may feel pity for him dying alone just why he did.
