Now I'm not looking to get a driver's license in England on vacation, but I would think that if I were to MOVE there, it would be expected of me to act as an English citizen and abide by the laws of the place I would be calling HOME at that point. I'm not saying that when an American goes to another country to visit or live he's always the model citizen - I'm not stupid. What I'm saying is if you plan on moving to another country, you should fully expect to have to follow the societal rules that are already in place - and that were in place long before your midget ass showed up. And then the lawmakers will back down to avoid any political retalitation/negative public perception, and in the end we look like assholes. When in Rome, do as the Romans do - if you don't like what the Romans do, go somewhere else. Sure, it's just a license picture - but these things always start small. Look at traffic signals! Has anyone noticed that they don't say WALK/DON'T WALK anymore? Because there are so many people in this city that don't speak english, we have to cater to them and use pictures to get the point across. Why not have them LEARN THE LANGUAGE? My grandparents came here from the Ukraine 45 years ago and knew NO English - but in order to survive they had to learn it - and did so willingly. We are given Freedom of Speech and yes, you can say whatever you want to whomever you want without fear of persecution. We are also given the freedom of religion. You can be a Christian, a Buddist, a Jew, a Muslim or you can worship your pet rock. No one can take that away from you. These are our inalienable rights. I am not condoning or condemning what this woman is doing. To use "religion" as an EXCUSE to go around laws is not acceptable. If she refuses, I agree, she should not be given a license. If religion dictates that she not uncover her head and therefore she cannot drive cuz she refuses based on her religion, then she should follow her morals and keep her veil on but suffer the consequences of not being able to get a license. BTW - the misconception of Muslim women NOT being ALLOWED to drive varies from country to country. In Saudi Arabia, yes, they are not allowed to drive. That's not based on religious dictation. That's based on the LAWS of the country. Similar to women and blacks not being able to vote in US during the early 1900's. That being said - seeing as I am the voice of the Muslims around here, let me say this. If you take a religion, a race or creed and judge all of people by the actions of a few, then your ignorance is astounding. That makes you no better than hitler for killing the Jews. The point I was attempting to make is that don't judge people as a whole. Judge them as individuals. Now for the individual rebuttals: Don West - You're right. I don't pay your bills. When you come to this country and want to take advantage of all it has and than refuse to do something that is required for the drivers license, but because she is Muslim and that is her religion she can sue? As for watching from Staten Island - I was there, front and center also - I was on the boat and saw the second plane hit while I was halfway to the Manhattan dock! And I then watched everything else from the island side dock once we returned. Yes, I was horrified, scared, and angry - it took me over a month to really be ok with it (thank God I didn't lose anyone) but when I go to my local deli in the morning for a paper and the Sikh owner takes my change, I don't look at him like "you're a terrorist" - I look at him like the guy that sells me my paper. To generalize a race of people based on the actions of a few is just plain wrong - you can't justify it, no matter how hard you try to. You can reach me through AIM or email.
