I am not saying that Gladiator was a bad film, I'm just saying its not all its cracked up to be. For example the opening battle was one of the most poorly done battles scenes i have ever seen. You get a ton of closeups of the action but never a pan out like in braveheart that lets you see all the carnage. and it is so dark during the battle i could barely tell what was going on. and the collesium that they "re-created" looks like ass. I saw better special effects in independence day. and also when he fights the tigers and that big guy they had just a bunch of closeups and no pan outs. its also historically incorrect. back in those days thumbs up met the person died and a closed fist meant they lived. its a travesty that "crouching tiger hidden dargon" or "traffic" didnt win. this we be looked on like the year when How Green Was My valley beat Citezen Kane

I thought Gladiator sucked,

Requiem for a Dream was the best film of 2000
American Psycho was second best

Also up there:
Almost Famous
O Brother Where Art Thou

Hey, I gotta agree-most truly great films are shunned by the academy. Okay, who are you, and what did you do with the real GR? j/k!

-Thanks for sharing.

Gladiator was great, not as good as Saving Private Ryan, but that movie is from last year and it should not be comprare with gladiator. But Braveheart and Patriot(Braveheart rip off) can, for me those movies are all up there, thumbs up!

SO SSSHHHHHHH!!!

well, i thought gladiator was a good movie. as far as the battle scenes not being to your liking, just because they weren't done in the same way as other movies doesn't make them inferior. it's all dependent on the vision of the director. i personally enjoy seeing things done in a different manner once in a while and thought the action scenes were great.

although i didn't see all the movies that were nominated, and gladiator probably wasn't the best, but the oscars have always been commercial, what did you expect?

one of the few movies i did see this year though, requiem for a dream, was a brilliant film and ellen burstyn definitely deserved the award, but who really thought they weren't going to give it to julia???

Don't get me wrong, I love Julia. But Best Actress? For THAT? It was a cute role, fun to watch, loved the costumes (now THAT deserved an Oscar!) but it was far from the best of the year.
Alas, who wins is a political decision, and usually has little to do with quality.

well, i was kinda hoping for an upset, just because it was such a given that she'd win. i mean even steve martin made a joke at one point about her needing the tv they were giving away for the shortest speech. so, i just thought it'd be funny if she lost, they'd all look kinda stupid. but, what are you gonna do, it's a popularity contest. besides, we all know, the only category they have upsets in is supporting actress.

Did anyonme else see The Girl On the Bridge? It was a french film done in black and white that played at the Angelica and a few other artsy theaters in the city, it was one of the best along with Requiem For a Dream and should have gotten much more exposure than it did.

whatever movie the olsen twins are going to be in this year is going to be my pick for movie of the year..
as for last year, some of you may say it was kinda boring. but i really enjoyed castaway..there was an hour of the movie where there was no dialogue and no music, and it still only seemed like it lasted 15 minutes.

I'm still pissed that Jack Frost with Michael Keaton wasn't even nominated. I think it should have won for Best Picture, Best Costume and Best Special Effects. Can you believe how lifelike that snowman looked? Dude... he rocked.

Another film completely overlooked by the Academy was Battlefield Earth. They were robbed. Travolta gave one of his most believable performances. The plot line for the entire movie was flawless and the actors were phenomenal in their performances. How could the snobs at the academy overlook such a great movie? It's a travesty, I tell ya, a true american travesty.

Grump...

You f'n nailed it bro. I heard when the nominees were
announced and Keaton's name was not among the elite, he
went on a mad paint huffing session that lasted 30 days and
30 nights.

Jack Frost, even though it came out in 1999 had one of the best lines of all time:
