O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | CRX Sorry to hear about the job. The good news is, there still is a shitload of other ones out there. Not sure what you did at the restaurant or what you got paid, but by the time you file unemployment and the first check comes in, you probably can be drawing a paycheck from somewhere else. Plus the amount of unemployment you get probably won't please you. Remember to finish your last days like the Clintons, take all the China and silverware. Good Luck, it will all be good. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Oct. 00 | Sorry CRX, While I can't offer you a job, I can join with O&AS and say that you can get a new job. And, I'm sure from the way you've described the old one, you can get a much better one. Oh, and get your ass to the unemployment office real quick. Get it over with and start collecting. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Sorry to hear about your job CRX. Unemployment sucks, but BM is right, you need to get down to your local Unemployment Office first thing tomorrow morning to file. In Jersey, you go the first time and they fill out some paperwork, then you go back a second day to get things started. It is just an all around miserable experience. Say hello to my little friend! O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I'm pretty sure that you are supposed to wait a week before filing for unemployment. I had to file for it about 9 years ago. The lines suck and they only gave me around $300 a week. You would be much better off trying to find a new job. And if your really desperate, I can always give you a job planting Tulips.:) Kindest Regards, Your Name

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Sorry to hear that CRXGirl :( There is an unemployment office in LIC at the Queensboro/Queens Plaza stop. Get a letter from your restaurant stating that you are no employed there. Be sure to go there ASAP to start the clock so you can get some money. The max is $300/week and it may take a couple of weeks before the first check arrives. REMEMBER, this money is not TAX-FREE so you will need to pay taxes on this at the next tax cycle. I think the max period you can collect is 6 months. There are also other benefits you can get from them - they can set you up with classes to learn new skills. O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 00 | As someone who was recently forced to start collecting unemployment, there have been some changes to what Mashed is saying. In New York, you no longer have to go to the office, there is a 1-888 (like a 1-800) number you can call to file now. The max is $405 and you'll need your driver's license, W2's for about the last 18 months, and one or two other things I'm forgetting. I'll look the stuff up in a little while and let you know the rest, CRX. ----- E-mail: JustJon@opieanthony.com

Instead of having to go in weekly to tell them you are still unemployed, you would call a number they provide and give the pertient answers. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Good luck for those searching. From the for what it's worth department, for those of you seeking IT jobs, tread carefully. The economy continues to spiral into this George W. Bush initiated false recession and companies are reacting. IT budgets are many times one of the first cuts companies make and this is happening all over at a rather accelerated rate. Job openings that are there today can disappear tomorrow. Make sure you investigate thoroughly the reasons that the position is open, what projects or functions they support and if this is a new position or one that is open due to a resignation or termination. Consulting or IT staffing companies are not bad choices, as they tend to place more people during recessionary times because employers are forced to keep staff headcount numbers low. Also, don't expect to command the same salaries that you might have expected as little as two months ago. Companies are looking for employees committed for long term commitments, not big money quick fixes. You can trust that I know of what I speak. K1d Afrika can attest to this as he beat the shit out of me last week on the board in part for what I did for a living. Hope this is of some help and good luck.
