| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00  | All this overblown signature picture stuff is just God Damn annoying. Everyone tries to outdo everyone else. This guy has a swirling text, this one has scrolling text, hey that guy over there has a sig pic oversized, that one has two or three pics in his sig. I was under the impression we were to keep the pics down to a respectable level, not this gigantic art gallery we call the board. We have songs, sayings and novels in text as well, in our signatures. Personally I say it is too much, yes I can't do what a lot of you do. I choose not to, a small picture and two(two} sentences in mine. When I first started posting, I got reamed for oversized pictures, BIG TIME, what happened to that???? Are we using way too much bandwidth?? What about all the clutter??? Is our pride in our pics costing Froy and this board it's integrity??? I am not talking about posting pics that are pertinent to a story or idea heard on the radio, that's funny if it's timely. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I have no problem with text in our sigs. The admins put a limit on the number of characters in your sig, and they all look fine. As far as the pics go, the only problems may be with humongous pics and people with multiple pics in their sig. Theres no need to have more than one. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | in some ways, i agree with you kingpin, some people really overdo it and have 10 lines of text and huge pictures but i think one of the things that makes this board fun is that there are so many people who can make these amazing pics that i always am able to get a laugh out of e.g. gooch, fez, and most recently cluster-f (the animation is f'n great) overall, i don't think that its that big a deal most of the time  "Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid People in Large Groups" | ||||

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Wow... an honorable mention amogst the likes of Gooch and Fez is flaterring man... thanks. :) Considering I'm pretty new to this sig stuff, let me just say this.... A sig is exactly that... a signature of it's creator. I don't feel like I'm trying to out-do anyone, I don't think anyone else is either. (granted we DID have a contest)... but it wasn't about winning. It was about being creative. That's why I do it... first and foremost to hopefully give back the laughs that all you fuckers have given me in my near two months here. Yes, some border the limitations, and some bastardize them. But if they are reasonable then we will deal. If you're concerned about space, pics are stored remotely, text barely takes up any at all (other than vertical real estate) If anyone goes blatantly overboard, they are asked to fix it. That's the way it is... period.

The sig pics are getting more and more eloborate and people have discovered HTML coding which makes them even more eloborate. In my humble ass opinion, here's my perspective: The signature in general is intended as a visual identifier of that person, or the character that the person would like to be represented as. My philosophy has been to try and keep it simple with obscure references in my sigs. For most users this is true. Size regulations should be adhered to. This new server that we're on is slower than the old one. The images that need to be loaded, the larger those images are, the longer it takes to load a page. I'm at home today on a dial up and I'm dying. Size does matter. As does text, color, and any other little additions that are included. One side of me says, "hey, this is who people are. They show it in pictures and in words. those words are in catch phrases and lyrics." The other side of me says "KISS - Keep it simple stupid. The more people pay attention to your sig pic, the less they pay attention to what you post." Given a choice, people need to find a delicate balance between the two. I agree w/ the size requirment thing and the fact people get all crazy w/ the scrolling text and pics. But they do slow down the loading time of pages. So they are loading from geocities, aol, tripod servers. But yes they do slowdown the site because they need to load up. But they dont cost the board money. I agree with kingpin even though i myself have a Jim Morrison poem under my sig thats several lines long but text under the sig is the same as text above it. I say it's everyone discretion but stay reasonable with the sigs though. Kingpin meant well though so no beef here he just cares for the site as do many of us. Atleast he had the balls to speak up about it. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | as per previous discussion, Kinger...we are definately in agreement. Sig pics should be kept simple. Images are always welcomed, but not as an unmitigated mess of animated neon, gigantic, mutliple billboards. I am very much against animated sigs b/c each slice (or layer) is as big as one sig. Therefore, and animated image of 3 or 4 slices is just ridiculous. Plus, unless you use something powerful like ImageReady to optimize the image and cut down the size...50kb is a little on the high side. Somewhere around 27-35kb would be more reasonable. Images via Imageready can be knocked down to almost 20kb without any noticable difference. Like Painter mentioned: sigs are a personality identifier. But they also have become a celebration and example of some creativity drawn from the O&A show, itself. (courtesy Pantera, Fez, Kid Afika, GimmeShelter, IAMANTHONY, myself and many others that I am forgetting). Imagery on this site is a definate and popular creative expression and outlet, as well as many a time: become a part of the show itself. So, it is really not gonna disappear or go anywhere. However, that aside, there needs to be limitations and structure to them, otherwise the cacophony of sig whores with animated, singing, fat files that will slow down a page to a crawl when they start looking for attention from the show b/c they are following the popularity of one of our sigs...is something that needs to be avoided. However, for the most part, this really hasn't happened yet...and the mods will make sure it won't happen down the line. Great topic, Kingpin. Your still the man!!!  | ||||

| Psychopath Registered: Feb. 01 | What are the rules? I'd like to be more funny, and I hate long posts based on stupid questions as much as anyone, but I feel I really have to raise this topic. From my short experience posting here I know some rules exist, and are acted upon, but I honestly have no idea where a listing of such rules would be found. Currently there seem to be only a few dozen regular posters, but there are now thousands of regular users. It won't be long before I'm not the only person asking this question. Usenet newsgroups have been handling similar problems for decades. Their solution usually is to repost a thread at regular intervals that states the group's charter and lists out a FAQ. New users are asked to read and consider the current charter and FAQ thread before posting. It may make life easier on moderators and all forms of users to adopt this approach rather than inventing clever new ways of screaming "DILLON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". Honestly, no disrespect intended.
