N.J. Lawmaker Denounces 'Sopranos'

WASHINGTON (AP) - A New Jersey congresswoman, the granddaughter of Italian immigrants, wants the House of Representatives to denounce the cable television series ``The Sopranos (news - Y! TV)'' for ``unfair stereotyping.''

Rep. Marge Roukema, R-N.J., is asking other lawmakers to sign onto a resolution she is drafting that will praise Italian-Americans for their civic contributions and criticize movies and television shows that portray them as gangsters.

``People stop me in the grocery store, objecting to ('The Sopranos'),'' Roukema said Tuesday. ``I decided this has gotten to be so discriminatory and stereotypical of Italian-Americans as mobsters, and denigrating women and families, that I thought I have to speak out.''

The HBO series focuses on fictional mob boss Tony Soprano and his dual struggles heading a suburban New Jersey family and an organized crime family.

Roukema said she will introduce her resolution within the next two weeks. Congressional resolutions are statements of opinion and, even if passed, do not carry the weight of law.

I'm not exactly sure what this legislation will do(praise Italians and criticize film??) but I'll say it, this woman should stop acting cunty.

Hmm. I'm Italian and Irish. I work in a Pizza place, and I drink a lot. Perhaps legislation should be made against me for contributing to stereotypes.

Figures a twat congresswoman would want to pass legislation for the sopranos instead of a healthcare bill. Good to see my tax dollars at work. And if I am not mistaken there were a hell a lot of Italian Mobsters. This is like saying that German people weren't anti-semitic because that is stereotyping them as racist. Bottom line Censorship=Fascism.

I pondered this a bit longer and thought about something new. A Congressman or Congresswoman's primary concern should be about helping the state.

Maybe it's possible that the incredibly popularity of Jersey set The Sopranos has helped the tourist rate of the fucking state and thus then the STATE OF NEW JERSEY through toruist revenue.

Also, if there ARE people who come up to this woman just to complain about one of the few shows that exhibit quality on Television (why don't they complain about Joey on FRIENDS being a stereotype?) then these are the people who should be, well, shot. I mean, a) these people know their Congresswoman (mini-poll how many of you can pick your Congressperson out of a lineup) and b) feel good enough about their relationship that they could come up to her in a grocery store (another mini-poll, how many of you actually think the Congresswoman goes to the Grocery Store?) to complain- not about environment, not about taxes, not about education but about TONY FUCKING SOPRANO AND PAULY WALNUTS?

Doesn't this bitch (& other Congressman for that matter) have anything more important to worry about!?!
For the love of God! Is shit like this in their job description.
Is this CUNT insane!?! Is she gonna tell me that there were never Italians involved with the mafia?
Now I fear I am being stereotyped as a stereotyper just by viewing the show and believing some of these scenarios.

Well said IkeaBoy. I'm an Italian-American and I love the show, it does stereotype but then so does about 80% of anything else you watch on TV. I still don't undersatnd why these people that don't like the show can't just change the f'n channel! As some might say.."Ponderous..Fuckin Ponderous!"

What this fucking Twat fails to realize is this simple statement of fact. In the USA as a whole, most Italians aren't mobsters, but most mobsters are Italian. Granted, there are Russian mobs, Chinese mobs, and Irish mobs. But what people made organized crime famous? ITALIANS!! Stupid fucking cunt twat whore. This fucking CUNTry is in desperate need of a revolution against our Democracy's slow evolution into a Fascist/Socialist country. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!~~~

Has there been a day when IkeaBoy has not posted a news article? ;)

Regarding this Sopranos article, it is just crap. I believe we could sit here and name over 500 movies and shows that portray Italian’s in the same light. Why are they attacking Soprano’s? Well simply because of its ratings and of the publicity they will receive.

I so agree, My fionce's grandmother lives down the road from pizzaland which is showed in the intro of the show, and she goes in there a lot, and since the sopranos have been on, they have been mobbed with new business because of the show. What is wrong with that? Nothing.
The state can make more money because of tourism and because of this show, more people want to come to our little asshole of a state (you are right brownstone). F this cunty twat.

(Thanks for the correction Silvio)

I have a question how many times has anyone seen a congressman or congresswomen in their local grocery store? I'm in the same town as RICK LAZIo and have never seen him in person. Or any other legislator from around here.

Where were these people when the show was frist getting popular. It;s take 3 seasons and all the awards for these ASS-F's to open their mouths. I wish they would all just go drop dead. This Bitch and the Professor from the city that was on Ron and Fez wanting HBO to change the focus of the show. AGAIN PEOPLE WITH TOO MUCH FUCKING TIME ON THEIR HANDS!!!!

Don't faint when I say this AM, but you are 122.5% correct! Fucking assholes who wish to force there views down our throats.
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS = COWARDESS!
When we are made to fear offending others, we have lost our freedom of expression. Fuck that stupid cunt! I don't like using the C word, but that is the depth I feel about both fucking political parties willingness to throw away our rights, one by one, little by little, till this is a fascist run hell. Fear of the truth, is their game, the truth will set us free!

I honestly don't understand the pettiness of some people. Don't these PC Treehugging Fuckers have anything more important to be concerned about then bringing down the one good show on TV! I mean, how could a character on a TV show possibly affect a human being in real life in any negative way. What are these Italians afraid of, that people will see their name and assume they are in the mob. GIVE ME A FUCKIN BREAK! Even if people do that, why should they FUCKIN care. People that stereotype based on a TV show should get in the coffin anyway. I for one think that what this congresscunt is doing is not only petty and wrong, but just plain evil.

Your'e not going to get an argument from me that fascism blows. But Socialism is not necesarily a bad thing. Notice I did not say Marxism which also could be democratic too. A better word would be totaltarian. I love how this fucking bitch says she was getting groceries but everyone knows she is full of shit. This twat hasn't even the show.

Okay, since none of you really realize what this Congresswoman is doing, I'll let you know. First of all, a representative's responsibility is to her constituents, and she never would have brought it up unless numerous persons complained to her about it. Furthermore, since most supporters of the Sopranos aren't coming up to her telling her how great of a show it is, and it's mostly people complaining about the program, since Representative Roukema has never seen the program she'll only be able to go on what she hears. And I imagine her staff will simply tell her the complianers are correct, without her ever seeing the program. That circumstance is not unusual, since a Congressman has a lot to do without bothering with a stupid program. If it will please who she represents by introducing a resolution, then she'll do it just for that purpose.

Secondly, I must explain what a resolution introduced in the house acutally means. When a resolution is introduced, this is what happens to it. 1. It is sent to committee, and furthermore to a subcommittee. 2. The committee either reports a bill on the subject or dismisses the resolution as inexpedient. 3. The bill is read three times before the house, and at each time the house can dismiss the bill. 4. If the bill is finally engrossed, it is voted on and can pass or fail the house. 5. If it passes the house, it makes its way to the senate. 6. Once read before the senate, it is referred to the respective committee there. 7. That committee and subcommittee deal with the bill, and finally report it to the floor. 8. Once introduced, a bill can either be rejected right away, amended, or passed immediately. 9. If an amendment is made to the bill, the process starts all over again once it reaches the house.

To summarize the process, guys, it takes a long time before a resolution becomes law. Furthermore, the only thing this resolution is saying is that Italian-Americans are not all bad, and that the show does not completely represent how modern-day Italian Americans act today.

For all intents and purposes, this resolution doesn't do anything to the show. It is just Congresswoman Roukema's responsibility to respect her constituents. There is nothing to worry about.

"You think about that now."- some guy from a Twilight Zone episode
