Buy a car with a 6 cyl. in it. What's the point of the house on wheels that just sucks up gas.

tahoe is by far the best of the bunch
the only down side is when they raise gas prices you might have to take out a loan to fill your tank
good luck with whatever you pick

I don't remember the exact specifics of the deal but I believe the Land Rover Discovery is going for around $400 or less/month

Land Rovers are way too much money to maintain...I have a '97 defender 90 and it's engine is a piece of shit...(wouldn't trade that cool ass ragtop for anything though). Gonna put a 350 chevy in later this year so i wont have to pay $95.00 an hour to the mechanic.

Why buy a Ford? I think you could find a Vista Cruiser for less money. Since I actually use my Cherokee off-road, I wouldn't buy anything but a Jeep.

However, if you're looking for a SUV that drives higher than a car, go for the Chevy. The Explorer has major design flaws and the new 2002 model has already been recalled.

Corpse - I've driven just about most of the SUV's on the market. Here's my report:

Ford Explorer: Safety rating is great but it's built on Ford's Pickup truck chasis and rides like it. Unless you go for the upgraded package, which puts better suspension and shocks on it, the fn thing rides like a pick up truck. Very bouncy

Acura : Haven't driven it yet. But it's made by Honda. They make good cars that last.

Tahoe: Unfucking believable. I came very close to buying one last year. Gas prices scared me off. The thing has a 35 gallon tank and gets about 16 mpg on average. If you drive alot, it'll cost you serious dinero to fill the tank. Maintenance is also kinda high. The engine is completely computer driven. So are the rest.

Jeep Cherokee: My all time favorite SUV. Fun to drive. Fast. Reliable. Smooth ride. Looks good.

Durango: Couldn't pay me to own one. The damn thing is boxie and rides like shit. Bounces all over the road. Almost turned on over turning a corner.

If given a choice and money was not a concern, I'd go with the Tahoe.

Corpse, sorry to respond so late...
If you are actually going to take your vehicle off-road, don't consider the Escape. It has no low range. Depending on your usage of the vehicle, that fact might be significant.
Also, you'd essentially be leasing a Mazda Tribute - the two vehicles are built side-by-side in the same plant. I work for a Mazda dealer and there have been a helluva lot of recalls for a vehicle that's been available for such a short time.
Good luck in your search.

I've had 2 Nissan Pathfinders, back to back. One back in 96 until 99 and another from 99 until now. I'm sick of driving a truck and they eat gas like a motherfucker. I can't wait to drive a car instead. That being said, I really prefer the Pathfinder over all the other SUV's. I tried all of them and have driven a Pathfinder for a bit over 6 years now.
