I'm in the process of writing a term-paper in MLA format. one of the requirements is that I have to put my last name along with the page number at the top of the page. I figured out how to put a page number at the top, but I have no idea how to get my name up there too. I think that I have to reduce the margin to 1/2 inch, but I don't know how to do that either. any help would be appreciated.

Life is like a box of chocoloates, a cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift no one ever asks for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this mostly undefinable whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there's nothing else to eat during the game. Sure, once in a while you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee, but it's gone too soon and the taste is fleeting. In the end you're left with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts, which if you are desperate enough to eat, leaves nothing but useless brown paper wrappers.

To change the margins of your page go to "File" at the top, then click on "Page Setup", the first thing you'll see is where you change your margins. I'm not sure if it's different at all for certain versions, but hopefully it's all the same. Sorry but I'm not too sure about the first part of your question, hope this helped though.

how is the alignment supposed to look?

last name centered with page number in right hand corner

or

last name and page number in right hand corner on one line

or last name and page number in corner with last name on top line and page number on the bottom line

And what version on Word are you using?

Here are some basic directions...
1. Place your cursor at the beginning of your document
2. Click on View
3. go down to header/footer.

From their it should be pretty self explanatory.

the format is supposed to be last name and page number in right hand corner on one line and i'm using Microsoft Word 97.

I have version '95-7.0. anyway, you go up to format, heading numbering. then, on the rite hand side it says modify, click it. next, type ur last name in the text before section. and then choose 1,2,3 for the bullet and numbering. and make sure u press pg 2 for the start at point for mla format.
