May 21, 2001 -- The Rev. Al Sharpton says he may run for president in 2004 - assuming a national leadership role in the black community long held by the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
"Clearly, I see myself as very much a potential Democratic contender," Sharpton told The Post. "I would not enter this to be symbolic."

But he denied speculation he has been maneuvering to take advantage of Jackson's political weakness since revelations the head of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition fathered a child with one of his Washington staffers.

"I'm not doing anything different than I was, and I'm not trying to run against Rev. Jackson," Sharpton said.

He also said the Democratic Party had let blacks down by not energetically protesting voting-rights issues in the Florida presidential election.

"The Democrats wouldn't even raise the disenfranchisement of black voters as an issue, and we can't afford to be marginalized like that," Sharpton said.

"People are saying to me, ‘We need to do something dramatic,' and I think the time has come for that, and I'm prepared."

Sharpton will attend a meeting of national progressive leaders in Philadelphia next month - when a presidential bid will be discussed.

"I think the climate is such that we certainly need to dramatically challenge the [Democratic] party, and I think one way of doing that is a candidate, and I'm available to be their candidate," he said.

He said he also would consider a third-party candidacy if he did not win the Democratic nomination.

Sharpton ran in New York in the Democratic primary for mayor in 1997 and for the Senate in 1992 and 1994, losing each time.

Sharpton's White House ambitions were first reported in this week's Time magazine - but he said he has been working for several years to build a national base beyond New York City.

Sharpton said he frequently talks to Jackson but they haven't spoken about his White House ambitions.

He said that well before the sex scandal, Jackson was perceived by some in the black community as being too much an "insider" with the Clinton White House and the Democratic Party.

At least we know Anthony is going to bring back the Reverend Al impression today. He might be the only candidate that would not get one vote from a white person.

It would make sense for rev Al Sharp-A to get elected prez because he has a lot of experience fleecing corporate america. Stealing money is what the govt does, and he is a master at it. Too bad no one outside of liberal NY would vote for him.

I'd prefer President Al than the horrid crippling fear I have that Barbara Streisand and Rosie O'Donnell will stick their noses into the political game.

*The sound of Filzy Laughing so hard he falls off his chair*

Now that's funny! Rev. Al's chances of Becoming president are as slim as Pat Buchannon.
David Duke has a better chance.

Reverend al's sexual exploits were so famous they even made a song about it:
"Im Sorry Ms. Jackson, I am for real..."
I hope for his sake his wife accepts his apology.

Um... That was a MAD TV parody about the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dave, not Rev. Al. You trying to say all Martians look alike? Hmmm? :)
