Well since I stood over the Arizona and watched as oil still spewed from its tanks, while getting that wrenching feeling in my stomach....

and this being a crappy love story wrapped around some war scenes....

just dosen't cut it for me...

I saw Pearl Harbor. I snuck into it about an hour fifteen in after seeing Shrek (Very good movie, not Memento good but good) and finishing HP Lovecraft's "The Colour From Space" which is an excellent intense short story.

I am not a war expert. I am not a history buff. I have seen a lot of films. I know when films suck, Pearl Harbor is one of those films.

For years I've bashed Saving Private Ryan because I felt that without the opening sequence it would have been nothing. I appreciate the opening sequence more because it was amazing. I appreciate the opening sequence to Enemy at the Gates. I appreciate the Sniper sequence in Full Metal Jacket. I appreciate the hospital scenes in M*A*S*H. I don't appreciate the Pearl Harbor sequence in this film. What separates the first four from the most recent one? Gore. Now I'm not the type who says "more gore more gooder" but when you're trying to depict "war is hell" and you see hardly any blood (Sure there is some but not a lot especialyl when compared to SPR), the message is kind of lost. I also found the thing to be a bit repetitive.

The hospital scene is supposed to be shocking since Bay uses different filters on his camera. Like he uses shaky cam (Spielberg used it to effect in SPR, Bay uses it to defect), blurry cam (still not sure what this is supposed to mean), liney cam (vertical lines), and finally slow-mo cam (slow=mo means important!). As mentioned above any hospital scene in M*A*S*H is more effective than the hospital scene in this.

As much as the plot stinks, the patriotic crap is even worse. From the shot of the floating American flag among the "Jaws" legs to Alec Baldwin being over-the-top but not over-the-top enough as Doolittle.

This is a movie to play games with such as MSTing it or pick out the movie ripoffs. Such as when FDR stands, I immediately think "Mein Fuhrer, I can walk." And when Affleck and Harnett take over the planes at Pearl Harbor and shoot down like 10, 15 fighters (I thought no Jap planes went down and if they did i'm sure they didn't go down dogfight style...anyways) it is an exact ripoff of the end of Star Wars: A New Hope with the Death Star. At one point Harnett says "it's just like shooting swamp rats at home." The score is essentially the same too!

Addition: During the bombing there are bullets and bomb flying and they close up of a guy getting shot holding a dog. the guy proptly dies but the dog runaways fine (he appears later OK getting on an escape boat) which caused me to laugh like De Niro in Cape Fear.

Maybe if we all petition they would show a version of it with only the war footage? then we would all go home happy. It would be short, and they would get their money.

I liked it..the whole love triangle was a bit much, (they ended it well) and it was fucking long, but I didn't think it was all that bad.I have seen worse. But I'm a girl so what the hell do I know.

News reports have the movie doing well, but way below the box office expectations.

They're blaming the running time ... not the fact that audiences may have wisened up

Noooooooooo...Dont go and see Pearl Necklace, sorry Pearl Harbour. It sucked so badly I was reduced to playing games on my mobile phone!!

Now Shrek, that is a different story! I laughed my ass off in that one! Lord Fuckwad...How the hell did they get that one past the censors?!

My reccomendations, go see Shrek and sneak in to Pearl Harbour for the last 40 mins.

Real Quick also, Do critics like Blow as much as they like Snatch?

I must add that that's what I did Transatlantic except if you want to see the bombing sequence, it's not the final forty minutes, it lasts forty minutes but starts 90 minutes in.

I thought Pearl Harbor was good. The only part I hated was the first 45 minutes where they introduced all the love story stuff. It got intersting as soon as Ben Affleck went to fight the war with England. The 40 minutes of the war part was absolutely amazing. Even the ending was ok. It made 75 million. How bad is that. The second biggest Memorial Day Opening ever. Overall I give the movie a B. If they cut the love story part in half, it would have been an A.

It is worth seeing.

First off, the battle scene was 32 minutes.

If this movie was 2 hours, it would have kicked some major ass. The attack scene was great. When the bomb blew up the Arizona??? that was cool. They also could have done away with the Doolittle Bombing. In fact, the only thing that was factual about that sequence was that it was led by Doolittle. It didn't do anything to help the movie, and it took an extra 30 minutes or so.
The love story didn't bother me as much as I thought, but it was very very very predictable.

There was a special over the weekend on the Discovery channel hosted by Tom Brokaw (no kidding). Two hours on Pearl Harbor, a search for a Japanese mini-sub that was sunk that day, and interviews with vets. AWESOME documentary. It will be replayed this Sunday and I HIGHLY recommend everybody check it out.

Someone should do a re-make of Tora Tora Tora with modern special effects.

We're having creative differences. I'm creative, you're different.
I see you've set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public.
