O&A Board Veteran Registered: Sep. 00 | You want to talk about frivolous lawsuits...I never saw it but didn't think "A Knight's Tale" would be THIS bad 2 Moviegoers Sue Sony Over Review The Associated Press Jun 8 2001 6:54PM LOS ANGELES (AP) - Two moviegoers have filed a class-action lawsuit against Sony Pictures, saying they were duped into seeing ``A Knight's Tale'' by ads promoting praise from a phony film critic. Sony has admitted that certain advertisements featured a quote from nonexistent film critic David Manning that declared the movie's lead actor, Heath Ledger, as ``this year's hottest new star!'' Other Sony ads featuring Manning included Rob Schneider's comedy ``The Animal.'' The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Omar Rezec, of Sherman Oaks, and Ann Belknap, of Sierra Madre. The pair said they filed it on behalf of all moviegoers tricked by the ads. The suit did not specify damages. Sony has expressed regret over the deception, and on Thursday suspended two executives for 30 days without pay. Josh Goldstine was suspended as senior vice president of creative advertising because the offense happened in his department, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, which cited confidential studio sources. The person who created the quotes was Matthew Cramer, director of creative advertising, who was also suspended, Variety reported. Sony has refused to confirm the names of the suspended executives. Cramer allegedly came up with the name as an in-joke with college friend David Bradley Manning of Ridgefield, Conn., according to the trade newspaper. The ads stated that the fake critic worked for The Ridgefield Press, a real weekly newspaper in the town. Newspaper officials there said they were not aware of the fake ads before Newsweek challenged their authenticity. Sony has vowed to monitor its publicity and advertising departments more closely. The flap has also triggered a probe by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I never understood why Sony had to stoop to the fake critic thing when there are so many Quote Whores out there that'll give Battlefield Earth a positive review for money and their name on the ad. I only trust Roger Ebert, NY Times, EW (although their critics are pompous asses), MrShowBiz.com and a couple of other respected publications. All other reviews are garbage. I'm like a chocoholic, but for booze. | ||||
