I'm not sure how many Hannibal fans there are (I'm one) but fewer people probably know that before Silence there was Manhunter, the movie based on the first Lecter book- Red Dragon without Claire Starling (the hero is the FBI agent who captured Lecter), with Lecter in the asylum and with a different villain. It was actually amde in the 80s into a pretty good movie called Manhunter with William Petersen as the agent and Brian Cox as Lecter. Anyway...it wasn't good enough for Hollywood so they are attempting to redo Red Dragon with Brett Ratner directing.

Well I've pretty much said it all the story is Here

"Manhunter" is based on the book "Red Dragon". The book is a thousand times better than the movie and a hundred times better than "Hannibal". The movie dropped EVERYTHING that made the book great. I highly recommend it.

I only hope they do it right. And I don't know how they are going to make Hopkins look 15 years younger.

Well everything I've read said they want to take the aspects of RD that the book left out (like Lecter before capture) and include them. I also heard a rumor that Jude Law was looked at as playing young Lecter but there were also rumors this was going to be a Cage as Graham and Bay as director film. I also heard that the movie was going to be part RD and part Hannibal sequel so who knows WHAT will come from ths.

Red Dragon explains how Agent Graham figured out Lecter was the killer, but Harris has NEVER explained hoe he was CAUGHT. (Lecter is already in prison in RD.)

If they want to do it right and make up for Hannibal, they shuld first do a FAITHFUL adaption of RD into a movie, and THEN do the sequel to Hannibal with whoever plays Graham teaming up with Starling to hunt down Lecter together. They could then have a great scene of Graham finally explaining to Starling how Lecter was caught the first time.

Just putting in a follow-up in the origin thread-

Ed Norton is playing FBI Agent Graham and personally I think he's a bad choice to play it. He looks too young, too fresh faced for the role that Will PEtersen played perfectly in Manhunter

Edward Norton Dons 'Dragon' Robe

NEW YORK (Variety) - Edward Norton has committed to star for director Brett Ratner in ``Red Dragon,'' a new adaptation of the 1981 Thomas Harris novel considered a prequel to ``Silence of the Lambs.''

Anthony Hopkins, who most recently toplined ``Hannibal,'' is in final talks to play the cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Lecter for the third time, and production is slated to begin by the end of November for a summer 2002 release.

The source material for ``Red Dragon'' is the same used for ''Manhunter,'' the thriller directed by Michael Mann in 1986. That film, which starred William Petersen (''CSI''), marked the first screen appearance of Lecter, in the form of actor Brian Cox.

The new film, written by Oscar-winning ``Silence of the Lambs'' scribe Ted Tally, will similarly focus on the attempt by an obsessive former FBI (news - web sites) agent (Norton) to hunt down a brutal serial killer known as the Tooth Fairy. Tally's script uses elements from the book that didn't make it to the first movie, and broadens the relationship between the agent and Lecter to fully utilize the box office potential of Hopkins.

The film was fast-tracked by Universal after the Ridley Scott-directed ``Hannibal'' grossed more than $350 million worldwide for the studio and its partner MGM. ``Red Dragon'' is being produced by Dino and Martha De Laurentiis.

Norton will play FBI agent Will Graham, who solves crimes by immersing himself so far into the psyche of the serial killer that he risks losing his own identity. His most famous catch was Lecter. In ``Red Dragon,'' Graham is forced out of retirement, and reacquaints himself with an incarcerated Lecter in hopes of figuring out the motive and identity of the Tooth Fairy before the killer strikes again
