Slowly but surely, I have been really getting into home theater. To make a long story short, I went out today and bought a receiver that got a lot of high marks in the way of reviews - listened to it in the store, not that that is an accurate test - and I hooked it up today, needless to say, It sounds great, but it doesn't have that Bass "punch" that my old one had (and yes, the bass is maxed out in the EQ setting)and this is VERY important to me. Basically, I think I'm going to retun it tomorrow (or maybe tonight, time permitting) but I was wondering what some of the board mebers had as far as an A/V receiver went? This way I could have more of a selection to consider if/when I return this one (I bought a Sony DE845 for those interested.)

I would've put this in the Home Theater forum, but I couldn't find the link (That Old Gag).

just curious.... do you have a subwoofer? That is definitely essential in terms of chest rattling low end. Are you using the same speakers you had with the old one? Frequency response is different when you mix and match different gear. also.. is it in the same room it was? acoustics are very different from room to room. Anyway.. as far as home theater receivers go, Denon and Yamaha make some really nice ones.. higher end in price, but from what I've heard, well worth it. Also they tend to have a lot more inputs, effects processing options, and all around features. It all depends on how much you want to spend.. personally, I would be willing to spend over a grand for my next one. If you are just into it as a hobby try some out that are around your budget. I have a sony right now, not the greatest, but it does the job. Try some out... close your eyes, and let your ears do the work. Good luck, man.

Everyone I talk with says basically the same thing, Sony just doesn't last. I would go Denon, Harmon Kardon, Onkyo or yes Pioneer. The Pioneer one throws people, but it is resonable prices and has the same features. Oh, good equipment doesn't have an equilizer. Equilizers work by cutting out the high and low ends of the sound and boosting other parts. You will get a truer sound with bass and treble nobs. If you want home theatre, make sure it has at least 100 watts per channel, that is what Dolby suggests. The Denon equipment is amazing. You can't go wrong with Bose, Boston Acoustics, or Harmon Kardon speakers

My problem was just that - I didn't have a subwoofer - I never did. being that I picked this up totally by surprise (I went to the Wiz to get a CD, saw the open-box sale, took a chance), when the sales guy suggested a sub, I thought it was just a pressure tactic to boost his commission on the sale. Not that I was never going to get a sub, just not at that moment. And the manual also stated that if no sub was to be used, to note that in the setup, and the bass would effectively be pushed through the two fronts (like my old receiver did, as it wasn''t even equipped to add-on a sub). I ended up running down to Best buy - a friend mentioned a sub he saw there on sale - and bought it, hooked it up, and now I'm good to go - sounds even better than my old system. I just wish Sony would note somewhere that low bass is to be expected w/o a sub.

I also heard Sony's don't "last", but my old receiver was a Sony, and even though it was just a pro-logic box, I put that thing through hell and back, and it never gave me so much as a hint of trouble - never even had it serviced! (its about 8 years old now). I've bought other Sony products before, and never had a problem with them. Not knocking Denon, etc, I've heard their stuff too and it sounded awesome, but for the price, I could'nt pass up this box (it was essentialy half-price, and still in the packing-wrap, not a scratch on her). I guess I'm one of the few who has good luck with Sony's :)

This is going to make a fine addition to my Sony 36" HDTV in a few weeks - screw paying $10 to go to the movies, I'd rather make my own theater LOL.

Thanks for the help guys!

if you have no bass, it usually means your speakers are "out of phase" try flipping the positive to the negative on one speaker.

Thanks Kid, that was actually the first thing I tried. Turns out I just needed a sub (see above post). I ran out in a tsunami of a rain storm we had here earlier and grabbed a sub - otherwise, i wouldn't have slept at all tonight contemplating what the hell else it could be (I'm weird like that). Got it working nice and sweet now, but I'm so tired of dealing with it, I needed to come on the board and "get away from it all" LOL.

Hint for those on a budget:

I bought an Aiwa stereo system with the surround sound decoder and all the speakers included. Very good sound. Not as good as a dedicated system, but for less than $500 for 5.1 surround sound AND a stereo in one, you can't beat it.

They have refurbished units, cheap as hell. I bought a 5.1, optical input receiver with programmable remote for $200. My friend bought a bit lesser unit with 5 satellite speakers and a sub for around $299. No problems with either unit, it's been about 3 months now.

I was thinking of getting my mother one of those Home Theater in a Box type things for Christmas. Does anyone have any suggestions? She wanted me to get her a regular stereo type thing but while I was looking for them on line I saw these HTIB things. They look pretty cool. I can't find any good sites on the net with reviews and such so I thought I would ask here. I was hoping for something with a multi-disk player, that plays cd's as well as dvds, a radio tuner and little lights that dance up and down while the music is playing(this part is not a joke). If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I'm looking to spend around 5-600.

I have and older model Pioneer reciever and two tall speakers by Sony, the kind with the two 5 inch drivers and 1 tweeter. I got good sound out of them but there comes a time when you finally get to see Private Ryan on DVD and you know there has to be more to this experience. I went out and bought a Bose system for rear speakers and the Sub and now I swear people are shooting at me when I watch it. You need BASS.

That'll work. Not a bad price either. Thank you. I guess you have one. What size room do you have it in?

Uh.. i dunno. It's in my living room, so it's pretty big. But the sound comes thru wherever you are, it's great.

hey IP,
thanks for bringing this back to the top.

I've been looking around to replace my receiver for a while. I have a Yahama that's still fine, but it's pre-dolby pro logic (that means it's older than some of you on the board :) ) and I've wanted the surround for the DVD playback.
I got a great deal on a SONY 675 ($229 in Costco - everyone else selling for $299), only to realize that it doesn't have any phono inputs. (you know, that thing that played those big black disks ).

Reading this thread reminded me that before the Yahama I had a SONY which I blew out in two years.

Probably time to give up the value and go back to the idea of spending more.

On a related topic, I have Boston Acoustic speakers, but I didn't want to pony up $1000 for Boston acoustic subwoofer & sattelites; I heard Cambridge Soundworks are good and reasonable. Anyone out there have them?

Since I started this thread (and it has come back to life) I thought I'd give an update. I still have the Sony and the sub, and they've been rockin'. I've learned alot about room acoustics, and that with some smart positioning and slight tweaks to your receiver settings, you can get a lot out of your set-up. I'm currently looking for a progressive scan DVD player to take advantage of my HDTV screen, so I'll have an extra DVD player for the bedroom (Unless someone here needs one - Lent, comment?)

Also that HTIB that Seph linked is a kick-ass setup - friend of mine got ti (I think, looks like the same specs) a few weeks ago, and its loud as hell - and gives a nice solid, clear video. For an all-in-one deal, its sweet :)

No one here has really mentioned 5.1 soundtracks yet, so I thought I would chime in here with my 2 cents. Any time you have the choice of getting a DVD in DTS over Dolby 5.1, don't even think twice. DTS whipes it's ass with Dolby 5.1 surround. Listen closely, and you will be amazed at all the extra sounds you hear with DTS.

Examples:

Galdiator - Beginning sequence of the battle in Germania. With DTS, you can hear all those bows "creak" as they are pulled back, along with all the catapults, etc.

Apollo 13 - Launch of the Apollo 13 rocket. With DTS, you hear little things like the "slurp" of Ed Harris's coffee, the condensation ice breaking away from the rocket, etc...

It's little things like this that make the movie more enjoyabe to watch because you feel like you are actually there, and not just watching it - the whole purpose of surround sound.

Does anyone know anything about tv's? I want to upgrade from my 25" to a 30". I went looking at a few sites and they have so many different kinds with different features. I don't want to break the bank but I'll spend a few bucks for a quality set. Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, since this seems to be the place for electronics recommendations...can anyone recommend a good digital camera for around $200?

I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter
