I know there's another thread, but I figured I'd get the ball rolling on discussing the movie in detail without pissing off people who haven't seen it yet.

What I liked about the movie:

Haley Joel Osment. I know it's really early, but I think his performance is worthy of an Oscar nomination. As good as he was in Sixth Sense, he was worlds better here, and that's saying something. He succeeded in creeping you out initially, but by the end, he was as sympathetic a character as a robot could possibly be.

The entire first part of the movie, up until David and Teddy were left in the woods, was fuckin' brilliant. The dinner scenes alone are worth the price of admission, being both brilliant and creepy. Another thing I liked was the scene where Martin tells David that his mother loves him more because he is real, while David isn't. Martin then walks away on his artificial legs, further blurring the lines between mecha and orga.

Also, throughout the movie, David is constantly referring to himself as "unique, special, one of a kind." The scene towards the end, when he is confronted with the fact that this is indeed false, really made me think. Everyone is told, from an early age, that they are unique, special, and one of a kind. How would you react if this were proven to be a lie, that in essense, you are a clone. Or...was anything proven at all? Sure, there were more Davids, but none of them had any of the same experiences as the original. Are we unique, strictly genetically speaking, or is it our experiences and connection with others and emotions that make us unique?

Gigolo Joe, the character, ruled. A perfect contrast to the innocent, emotional mecha David, he was devoid of almost any genuine emotion, and simply reacted to every situation as he was programmed to. He definately helped to add some strength to David's character, and Jude Law played the role flawlessly.

On to what I disliked:

The ending. I REALLY think they should have ended the movie with David on the bottom of the ocean forever, praying to the blue fairy. Instead, we get that crap with the super-future-mechas, which I thought served more to insult the audience than close the story. I can understand why they did it (Hollywood loves to "send 'em home happy" and ending with David on the ocean floor wouldn't have done this), but this to me was akin to Spielberg stroking his cock on screen for the last 20 minutes, completely unnecessary. If Kubrick were alive, this never would have happened. Even still, it didn't discredit the 2 hours of mostly genius that preceded it.

Did anyone else groan when they heard Chris Rock's voice? Totally ruined the flow of the movie...

I also was a bit disappointed in Teddy's character, I thought he should have portrayed as more serious and darker. Even still, it wasn't too bad that it detracted from the movie, and was nowhere near the level of the Worst Sidekick in Movie History - Jar Jar Binks!

Overall, though, I really liked the movie (as if you couldn't tell). The more I think about, the more I like it. It was deep as hell, and save for the ending, delivered much better than I thought it would (and I'm a total Kubrick nut). Three stars.

Anyway, I could go on and on...but I've said enough. It's 4:30 and I'm tired, but I'd like to know what you all think.
