With all of the discussion of the movie AI, I started wondering how many of you had a real understanding of artificial intelligence. This is a subject that interests me very much.

quote:

This is a position paper about the relations among artificial intelligence (AI), mathematical logic and the formalization of common-sense knowledge and reasoning. It also treats other problems of concern to both AI and philosophy. I thank the editor for inviting it. The position advocated is that philosophy can contribute to AI if it treats some of its traditional subject matter in more detail and that this will advance the philosophical goals also. Actual formalisms (mostly first order languages) for expressing common-sense facts are described in the references.

Common-sense knowledge includes the basic facts about events (including actions) and their effects, facts about knowledge and how it is obtained, facts about beliefs and desires. It also includes the basic facts about material objects and their properties.

One path to human-level AI uses mathematical logic to formalize common-sense knowledge in such a way that common-sense problems can be solved by logical reasoning. This methodology requires understanding the common-sense world well enough to formalize facts about it and ways of achieving goals in it. Basing AI on understanding the common-sense world is different from basing it on understanding human psychology or neurophysiology. This approach to AI, based on logic and computer science, is complementary to approaches that start from the fact that humans exhibit intelligence, and that explore human psychology or human neurophysiology.

This article discusses the problems and difficulties, the results so far, and some improvements in logic and logical languages that may be required to formalize common sense. Fundamental conceptual advances are almost certainly required. The object of the paper is to get more help for AI from philosophical logicians. Some of the requested help will be mostly philosophical and some will be logical. Likewise the concrete AI approach may fertilize philosophical logic as physics has repeatedly fertilized mathematics.

heaven forbid that someone try to post a topic that people might want to discuss. maybe I should've posted a "how to make a sig pic" thread?

There's a really great book called "When Things Start to Thing" by Neil GershenFeld (I think that's his name). He's the director of new media at MIT. It's his perspective as to where technology is going in the next 5, 10 and 20 years. He talks about the upcoming AI technology that MIT is working on.

Very much worth reading. It's not a boring lecture book and it's a quick read. Sorry Fez, no pictures, but you can draw on the back page if you want.

[tequila style post]You mean the one starring your mother? Or part II featuring your sister?[/tequila style]

A.I. is some really bugged out shit. There are some very interesting books (fiction and non-fiction) on the topic.

It's strange though, most fictitious stories have the A.I. wanting to shut itself off by then end of the story. Seem they figure out that life if futile.

Oh my God I've gone crosseyed. That was some rough reading. My IQ could barely handle that. I passed out twice reading it.

On the real though, it is a very interesting subject. I read up constantly about it. I have a hard time reading that shit unless I am high. When you smoke a nice phatty you can get down with those big words and deep reading. Cool shit. I gotta check out that A.L.I.C.E. bot link when I get home. Sounds phat. Peace.

One may forget, but the original 2001 by Arthur Charles Clarke was partially based on the concept of AI, but there was more substance than there was in the movie.

Hey Gooch, wasn't Hyperion a show on the WB?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was a great book. I would also suggest Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive by William Gibson.

A big problem with A.I. is knowing it when you see it. Ever hear of the Turing tests? They had a big impact on the philosophy of mind back in the 70's. Basically, they took a group of people, well educated in a certain subject (Shakespeare, mathematics, etc.,) and sat them each in front of a computer terminal. At the other end of some of these terminals were actual people educated in the same subject. The rest of the terminals were connected to an artifical "brain" programmed to discuss whichever topic the test group was versed in. The people spent some time in front of each terminal, and had a discussion on the screen in front of them about a specific subject. Afterwards, they were asked on which terminals they were talking to another person, and on which terminals they were talking to a computer. They were right about which terminals were connected to people or computers no more often than if they had randomly guessed without even having the discussion. In otherwords, they couldn't tell! They repeated this many times, and the results continued to be consistent.

Advances in computer science (mainly CPUs and data storage)will only continue to make these tests more fantastic.

Does this say there is something intangible about intelligence, or does this show that our "intelligence" is just a "program" written by genetics and experience. I think the latter.

I think I know the book you mention Grumpy. He said that in 20 years, at the exponential rate of CS development, CPUs will have more transistors/neurons than the human brain. WHOA!lol

I can't believe that no one mentioned Isaac Asimov...his robot novels might be a little dated, but his serious writting on the topic is great stuff.

The most fantastic sci-fi imaginable, will one day be considered primitive by our descendants...if they survive long enough:)

I love this sheet!

Wow faithless, very well said. The Turing tests are a true mind-fuck. It is mesmorizing to think about how we think. We seemingly apply new scenarios to experience and try to deduce the best reaction. This is exactly the challenge to developers of A.I. They have to create software that will remember what it "learns" and even be able to expound upon it.

I want to bring up again A.L.I.C.E.. If you have not seen this program before, and you are even remotely interested in AI, you need to check it out. This program actually learns, and remembers. You can talk to it for an hour, or more, and it will remember everything you say. It's actually kind of fun to fuck with it. I've asked questions like "how do you feel?", which gets interesting answers because it doesn't actually feel.

Supertoys last all summer long - The original short story in its entirety. (I promise it's short) There are also two sequels to it that were used as part of the movie's story.
