Remember to file this thread away in memory to recall it in 2003, when Dubya signs into law the biggest tax increase in history. Even though the house and the senate felt strongly that America could not afford this, Dubya pressured them into approving his initiative, a political victory at our expense. When he signs the increase into law, see if "Voting for Bush pays off" is how you feel then.

Well, here's the thing, when people talk about how much a tax cut costs, it's not a static equation.

If you cut taxes by 25%, many people (including politicians who don't want you to spend your own money because they figure they're much smarter and now how to spend it better than you do) believe that revenues will also decrease by 25%.

Well, see, it doesn't quite work that way.

If you take a gander at your macroeconomic theory, specifically supply-side economics you will find a phenomenon called the "Laffer Curve."

The whole point of the Laffer Curve is that it states there is a point at which you can raise taxes to a point where revenue actually decreases, and conversely you also have points where lowering taxes actually INCREASES TOTAL REVENUE.

Consider this: I'm in government and I want to double my government revenue. Hmm, here's an idea, how about I raise everyone's taxes to 100%.

Do you think your revenue will increase accordingly or will an economy pop up underground, will people not flee the country? Of course! There is NO encouragement to make any money because the government is going to take it all.

While this sounds ridiculous, various shades of gray fall below this level. The same theory holds true. It's a paradox. You can LOWER TAX RATES and as a result see A TOTAL INCREASE IN REVENUE.

It's just like a retailer who cuts prices by 40% but makes up so much in volume that their total revenues increase.

If it's not so unfathomable that people could cut prices but still increase profits, why is it SO FUCKING HARD for people to understand that it is GOOD FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO CUT TAXES?

wait a minute...i thought we were supposed to get a flat amount based on our filing status. CRX, why such a strange amount? Not that its my business, but if people are getting odd amounts, my notice will most likely tell me to send them money...
skitchr4u, using the example of a single filer or married but filing separately, the refund is equal to $300 OR, if less, 5% of your Federal-taxable income. (For heads of household the amount is $500 and for married couples filing jointly the amount is $600.) That should explain the odd amount CRX is getting; but I don't understand mikeWOW getting $400, I don't remember that amount being specified (and I don't think the youngin' is married nor the head of his household).

Well, the IRS did send out some incorrect notices apparently, so I guess he'll have to watch his mail to see if anything is corrected. Don't spend the money until it's in your hot little hands!

its a bribe. he is using up the surplus , ie:your future, in order to buy your votes now. i find it repugnant that voters are falling for this immediate gratification at the expense of our futures. dont get me wrong, i will spend it, but i would rather it be put towards the deficit.
