I finished The Stand yesterday and I was wondering suppose there's a plague or atomic blast of sorts and millions die or simply the government falls and civilization is on the verge of collapse and anarchy.

What type of function do you see yourself (or another board member) serving as the world falls apart around you? I'd like to be some sort or orator of sorts.

The narrator in Fight Club is the man we will be, Patrick Bateman in American Psycho is
the man we want to be

I'd like to get a better picture of the situation presented by the book since I haven't had the plesure of reading it. Is it like "The Postman" or does a general state of anarchy set in from the downfall?

"Glen honey, I have a question for you- what do you do for a living?"

"Hey I have a question for you too- why are you still here?"

Family Guy- Glen Quagmire, "Stewie's Addicted to Crack" episode.

Hmm IkeaBoy with another topic on Anarchism? If it was the good type of anarchy(yes the idealism that will never be acheived) I would live my life away banging away. If it was the bad kind I'd head a rebel group probably.

In an society in anarchy and collapse, i just see myself as someone trying to survive on my own...fuck everyone else

i see Froy trying to be the leader, but is quickly killed by GonzoStyle. Sean Cold is a ravenous killer, saving peoples skulls as trophies (see Predetor)

I'd be the recluse in the mountains with a high powered rifle and lots of ammo. But if I had to make a choice, I'd be with the old lady and the do-gooders.

If you haven't read THE STAND yet, I highly recommend you do. It's a thick ass book that takes some serious time to read but it's worth it. It's one of King's all-time best classics.

I've got the tech skills to help rebuild. Kind of like the guy who shows them how to fix the hydro-electric dam in the book.

I wonder how many people actually read the text people put under their sig pics.

Well, I'm a mechanical engineer now, so I guess Dent and I would be in the same boat.
I'd fix what I could and rebuild what couldn't be fixed.

Hmm...well, the guys in The Stand were great characters, but I never really liked the female leads, except Mother Abigail...maybe I'd be Lucy; although when it comes down to it, I'd rather just die off the rest of the country

OK, so who on the board is Tom? M-O-O-N, that spells Ftard ...and who's Trashcan Man?

[movie quote]So where are you going with this, IkeaBoy?[/movie quote]

Better question..I read the book 6-7 years ago, so I can't remember the characters name. The woman Laura San Giacomo played in the mini-series...who would be her?

As for what my place would be? If society really started devolving from a nuclear/chemical/biological disaster, I'd probably be one of the first to die.

Nadine Cross was the character's name. I'm renting the mini-series tonight on DVD. Sure nothing special on it but it's like 8 hours.

If the world were to really go through events as presented in The Stand, I'm not really sure what function and/or role I would play. Part of me would like lend a hand in the rebuild, but the other part would want to leave it all alone and be content with life only being comprised of "the basics".

That is an incredible book - I have read it a few times, and have done papers on it for High School and College classes. If you think watching the mini-series would be better than reading 900+ pages of the book, you are really missing out - not to mention, the mini-series sucked (especially since it was on network television - it might have been better if it were done on HBO or something).

I've never been impressed when they make Stephen Kings books into movies...

I agree though, if HBO did the Stand now, it'd be much better..and Corin Nemec(sp)?would not be in it, thank god.

With my dumb luck, I'd probably end up like that chick in the book who gets locked in her walk-in freezer while checking on her family's corpses. Natural selection, ain't it a bitch?

Most scientists beleive a major disaster like the Stand is almost inevitable.

1. Major diseases are easily spread due to population density and ease of travel.
2. Large meteor falling.
3. The super volcano that will end the world
4. Our own stupidity

There's even a theory that we HAVE ALREADY survived several extinction level events. And after each one of these events, humanity has started over from scratch. Just that this is the first time we've gotten so far with technology.

The unimaginable loss of life would be a great tradgedy, but for the survivors, it would be a great opportunity to rebuild the world better than it is.
