STAR-LEDGER -- New Jersey residents are wealthier and better educated than the nation as a whole, but they shoulder some of the highest housing costs in the country and endure some of the longest commutes to work, according to Census 2000 data released today.
According to the survey, New Jersey's median household income was $54,226 last year, highest in the nation. That figure was just ahead of Connecticut, Alaska, Maryland and Hawaii, and well above the national median household income of $41,343. It also represented a big increase from 1990, when New Jersey households earned $40,927.
The data also showed that more than 21 percent of households earned at least $100,000.
The data also showed New Jersey women with the highest median earnings in the nation -- $25,119. This was 32 percent higher than the national average, but still about 51 percent less than what New Jersey men earned.
At the same time, the New Jersey had a poverty rate of 8.2 percent, the fourth lowest in the nation. The national poverty rate was 12.5 percent.
But as New Jersey residents prospered, they faced high costs for rents and the purchase of their homes.
The median rent in 2000, the survey found, was $763 a month, the third highest in the nation and 25 percent above the national average. The median value of a home in New Jersey last year was $171,988 -- the fourth highest in the country, and 43 percent higher than the national average.
The average monthly mortgage payment for New Jersey homeowners, the census said, was $1,788.
As for education, New Jersey was also near the top of the list.
The state ranked fifth in the United States in the percentage of residents with bachelor's degrees or higher educational attainment. The data showed that 31.1 percent of New Jersey's residents, or about 1.7 million people, had at least a four-year college education. Nationally, 25 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher.
But for all the smarts and big incomes, New Jersey residents could not find a way to avoid long journeys to and from the workplace.
The average commute in New Jersey was 27.9 minutes -- the third longest in the nation, behind New York (30.3 minutes) and Maryland (28.1 minutes.)
The data also highlight a significant trend in New Jersey's makeup, the foreign-born residents who have been a major force in the state's population growth during the past decade.
The foreign-born population accounted for almost 1.5 million of the state's residents, nearly 18 percent, in 2000. Only California (26 percent) and New York (20 percent) had a higher percentage of residents born on foreign soil.
Although the new immigrants have come from Asia and Latin America, the leading ancestry group in New Jersey continues to be Italian. The Irish surpassed the Germans as the state's second leading ancestry group by 2000, the report said.

Why would a state be proud to lead the country in people of Italian decent?

I think the paper is a little off, the reason why we have the most income per house is because we have like 8 Spanish people per household who all have a job and carpool in the same Toyota.

Yeah, but they don't need to tell us that. Does anyone else here live in Jersey City? Does it smell like somewhat used Kitty Litter to you, too?

Tequilla, I'm Italian and I have a problem with them! ;)

Of course us NJ residents have the highest median income, how else are we going to afford the ridiculously high auto insurance. Something that NJ is also tops in.

I actually saw this same report on UPN 9 news tonight (channel flipping...I hate UPN). It does have the highest income but is also quite expensive to live in. Connecticut is in second place. And Jersey does smell like a horse's ass.

You get used to the smell after a few weeks, I bet we'd all miss it if it was gone.

Highest cost-of-living, highest income...I guess that makes some kind of sense, right?

The only parts of NJ that stink are along the Turnpike and the area outside of Philly.

That must explain why people actually live there.
