Actually Wounded there are many advantages to having a car with standard transmission. The only one I can remember right now is you get better gas mileage.

That's true but most people would rather have the worse gas mileage than deal with the annoyance of a stick. Hopefully I'll be learning this summer.

In NY you have to get your permit, then your junior's license (only can drive to and from school & work), and then when you are 18 you get your full senior's license.

umm..i know they gona change it to like 17 1/2...but when ur 17 u can still get a regular license. u just need to have taken the drivers ed and have had 5 hours of driving with an instructor and passed that written test.
and that 6 months probation crap when u first get ur license (at any age) sucks. i just got a ticket for doin 46 in a 30 zone (god damn highway patrol) so now im gona get my license suspended for like 60 days. so when u do u get ur license watch for that.

good luck amy, remind me to stay away from nj for a while ;) (i know, tog, everyone else said it, oh well). automatic is definitely easier to learn on, since like others have said it's just less to think about, b/c driving itself has enough to focus on. another advantage to stick people have not mentioned, something my mom taught me, is that w/ a stick less people will try to borrow your car since less people know how to drive it - which could be a good thing, knowing no one else will ever screw w/ your ride.

ive been drivin with a permit for a while, its hard first time around but you get better fast and its pretty easy from then on in

although iam a bad driver for 2 reasons

i am terrible at paying attention to stop signs

and i have a pet peeve of people passing me and i race them, if ur from north jersey you should know 46, i go about 55 mph there and there are people passing me!! there are like turns for stores and stuff too. it gets me really bad and whenever someone passes me i just bolt for a few seconds till my dad yells at me to stop

Honorable One!

I love driving my manual transmission. I just hate it in traffic

Amen to that. My first driving lesson was on dad's POS Subaru. He throws me the keys, sits down in the passenger seat and just says "Drive". Given he is 6'2" and over 300lbs, that was motivation enough.....took me about 4 minutes to learn how to drive stick without grinding the gears...LOL. I only drove stick until '96, when like Krebs aptly points out, I came to the realization that driving one in traffic sucks red mandrill ass!!

Good luck Amy :-)

That's not really something I'd be yelling from the rooftops there.

Like everyone said before, manuals are a lot more fun if you don't have to commute in bumber-to-bumper traffic every day. It's a good skill to know though, so just stick with it. I had to drive my buddy home from a bar one night, and luckily I knew how to drive standard since that's what he had, otherwise drunk boy had to drive

These automatic transmissions that you speak of, what are they? Seriously I have had 3 cars, all manual transmissions simply because an automatic makes me go to sleep.

Good luck Amy...and warn us before you go out on the road, we need the time to hide!!
