STRIP CLUB By KIERAN CROWLEY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 11, 2001 -- The owner of a Long Island strip joint has been arrested and charged with having a 14-year-old girl dancing topless at his club. The teen is a runaway from Florida, law-enforcement sources told The Post. "She was in trouble in Florida. She's a troubled kid who ran away," the source said. Detectives are looking into how she came to New York and if any adults who knew her real age got her the topless dancing gig, the source said. Cops discovered the under-aged dancer during a routine State Liquor Authority inspection of the bar at 9 p.m. Thursday night, said Suffolk County Police Sgt. Michael O'Brien. While identifying employees, officers were struck by the youthful appearance of the girl, who was talking to customers, he said. "She has a very young-looking face," said O'Brien. "She looked younger than 18." He said it was the first time in his experience he had found a 14-year-old girl working as a topless dancer. "We believe this is probably an isolated incident and a rather unusual one," said O'Brien. "We're looking to find a lot of answers to a lot of questions." Crystal Cafe owner Mitchell Putterman was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and unlawfully dealing with a child. He was taken into custody and later released on a desk-appearance ticket on the misdemeanor charges. Suffolk County Child Protective Services have assumed responsibility for the teen until her parents can be located. O'Brien said the investigation was continuing and the Suffolk DA's office was also involved. Additional, more serious charges may be filed against Putterman or others, said O'Brien. The Crystal Cafe - at 801 Conklin St. in Farmingdale - was already known as the place where a Nassau County cop followed an adult topless dancer and forced her to perform oral sex under the threat of arrest for drunk driving. The cop, Matthew Murphy, resigned from the force and received five years of probation in a plea-bargain deal on a charge of sodomy. -------------------------------------------------- by the way are any of our younger board members from Fla.?
