Microsoft to delay Xbox game console release

By ALLISON LINN
The Associated Press
9/22/01 2:25 AM

SEATTLE (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. will delay by one week the U.S. release of its Xbox game console system and is refusing to say how many units will be available on the later launch date.

The software giant's planned new computer game system -- its first real foray into the hardware business -- will now be available Nov. 15, the company said Friday.

John O'Rourke, director of Xbox sales and marketing, refused to give a specific reason for the delay. However, he said the decision had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks and the impact on the nation's economy.

"We just looked at a bunch of things and just simply said, 'You know, Nov. 15 is going to be the right date,"' O'Rourke said.

Microsoft also is no longer making firm predictions about how many units will be in stores at launch. Previously, the company said it would ship 600,000 to 800,000 machines for the now-scrapped Nov. 8 launch. O'Rourke said the company was no longer using that number, but wouldn't elaborate.

Instead, he said Microsoft aims to sell 1 million to 1.5 million units during the holiday season, a number it had previously floated.

Analysts had already speculated that Xbox faced production delays. They said the Friday announcement just reinforced that.

"This is clearly a production issue," said P.J. McNealy, a senior researcher who covers games for Gartner.

O'Rourke said the company had begun producing the games, but would not say if there were production problems.

This is the latest setback for Microsoft's game system, which will sell for about $299.

In August, the company said it was delaying until Feb. 22 the Asian release of Xbox, originally slated for this fall.

The company has not said how many units it hopes to ship for the Asia launch -- the home turf of powerful rivals Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co.

The delayed release gives Microsoft only a few days lead time on Nintendo, whose GameCube goes on sale in the United States Nov. 18. That system's Sept. 14 Japan release will easily beat Microsoft's.

Microsoft's other chief rival, Sony's PlayStation2, is already on sale.

McNealy said the problems probably wouldn't affect Xbox in the long term but was still an embarrassment as the company seeks to make its first impression in the gaming industry.

"There's still plenty of holiday season time to buy things," McNealy said. "From an industry perspective, though, it's a black eye."

i really dont want this system to do well. If its good, then i have to buy it. I'd rather the Gamecube does better because i know i wont buy that no matter what

I am Chuck's wasted time.
I've got the Dungeon Master's Guide. I've got a 12-sided die. I've got Kitty Pryde, and Nightcrawler too, Waiting there for me...Yes I do, I do. I've got posters on the wall. My favorite rock group Kiss. I've got Ace Frehley, I've got Peter Criss, Waiting there for me...Yes I do,I do. In the garage, I feel safe. No one cares about my ways. In the garage, Where I belong...No one hears me sing this song. In the garage, I've got an electric guitar. I play my stupid songs. I write these stupid words...and I love every one... Waiting there for me... Yes I do, I do.

I'm wondering if one of their reasons was because the Game Cube is supposed to be released around the same day.

uhhhh... now why would Microsoft want to make the release date closer to the Game Cube's? This would just provide competition... from a marketing standpoint i would assume releasing it a week before would be better... it would provide the Xbox w/ less competition in that first week, which means better sales... right?

I dont think Microsoft anticipated the overwhelming response from pre-orders. Most major online retailers sold out. It's good that they'll have enough systems at launch unlike some other systems. One week is nothing.

I for one am pissed about the delay. I know it's only a week but it just ruins a lot of my plans I already had in place.

I wonder about the games though. Those that were slated for a launch release, are they being pushed back a week too or are they going to be released for purchase on the 8th?

Plans? what plans did you have?

And why would they release X-Box games the 8th and then have people wait till the 15th to get the X-Box. That would be asinine.

I am moving the weekend of the 15th so I was going to play it with my buddies the weekend of the 8th. I will just now have to wait til the weekend of the 22nd. Oh well. As for the releasing of the games....Some games were slated for release even before the X-Box was supposed to be released on the 8th.

Example Given:

Madden NFL 2002 - October 30, 2001
NHL Hitz 2002 - November 2, 2001
The Simpsons Road Rage - November 6, 2001

M$ wasn't surprised by the number of preorders. They told the chains how many they'd be allocated. They had production problems and will now only have about 300,000 on launch day.

It's also common practice for third party vendors to release their games a few days before launch to ensure that their game is there for purchase on launch day (or to purchase in advance so you have it when you get home with the system)
