So I'm reading through this month's issue of EGM, and there's a huge discussion about PS2 Online. Now I don't have a PS2, but I read it anyway because I don't discriminate - even if I don't own the console.

Anyway, so there's a blurb about X-Box online, and it sounds like it's gonna be a lot of fun. Here comes my question :

Right now I have cable broadband (Roadrunner) for my PC, as well as cable TV. The TV is in the living room (one end of the apartment) and the X-Box is connected there. The PC is on the back room (other end of the apartment), so that's where my broadband connection is. I know that the boradband link goes through the main cable line (though they hooked up my PC to it's own line off the street main, per my request - it's more efficient on speed) so I was thinking - couldn't I just go out and buy the same Cable modem I have (which I have seen for sale) and hook it up to the cable main in the living room, and then connect that to the X-Box via whatever cable I need (I am assuming a network cable, like my PC) once the X-Box service goes live? Otherwise I'm gonna have to move the X-Box to the back (as well as put another TV back there) to play anything online.

What are your thoughts about this - and what do you think of consoles making the jump to online multiplayer modes? Will the games be as enjoyable as PC games? Anyone else looking forward to playing Unreal Championship as much as I am?

Ok...discuss....

The line between fantasy and reality is the same as that between sanity and insanity...which side of the line are you on?

Apparently some people don't like the black box - they're just jealous that they don't have one...pfffft!

No. You will need a router. I suggest buying a wireless one and putting it and the cable modem where the xbox is and putting a wireless card in your computer.

You cannot just simply hook up another cable modem because your computer requires an ip address to connect to the internet and so will your xbox. The two seperate cable modems will both demand the only ip address that your provider provides for you thus causing a conflict.

In the end it doesn't even matter

or you could just use one or the other and not both. take the line from your computer and put in in your x-box

Your'e right, that didn't even dawn on me. But I think the X-Box has an internal "broadband modem" of some kind built-in - I'll have to check on that (which throws my 'buy another modem' idea right the fuck out also).

The wireless router makes a hell of a lot more sense, but does it work well when the signal is not exactly straight-forward? I'm thinking it's like a cordless phone, where even with the antenna extended fully, you still get those "dead spots"? The apartment I'm in now is kind of quirky in the room set-up.

That's my problem - the PC and the X-Box are on two totally different rooms, and the broadband connection is in the room with the PC (and moving the X-Box there is not an option - I didn't spend $2000 on a 36" Digital TV so I could play my X-Box in the back room).

I'll look into the wireless router - thanks for the advice!

When my wireless gateway/router is working properly, I have no problems being in another part of the house and getting a strong signal. I've even gone outside in the backyard without problems.

:rolleyes::):-D
