Kevin Kelly posted the following commentary at wwf.com, I think it's a good read.

A blunder by Stephanie and a rare error by Vince brought about the end to the final two matches at No Mercy. Now that Chris Jericho is the WCW Champion and Stone Cold Steve Austin retained the World Wrestling Federation Championship, what is next and should drastic measure be taken by the McMahon family to make sure that those mistakes never happen again?
Y2J fans are dancing in the streets now that Jericho finally won the big one but neither Chris nor the Rock needed the input from Stephanie. While Mr. McMahon may have had honorable intentions, the end result was disastrous. Despite what Vince may have wanted, Stone Cold Steve Austin left No Mercy the champion as the Rattlesnake slithered out of St. Louis.

What could the controlling forces of the World Wrestling Federation and the Alliance done differently? How about stay the hell away from the ring? As a faithful employee of the McMahon family for over five years now, I know why they want to be there. The McMahon’s are the most passionate owners of any business I have ever seen. I respect their right to be involved in the outcome of matches but have they gone too far?

For Stephanie, it appeared to be a no-win situation, or perhaps a can’t-miss opportunity. Based on last Thursday’s Smackdown alone, whoever was going to emerge as the WCW Champion at No Mercy, they would be adversarial to the Billion-Dollar Princess but the winner will be in her employ. A Jericho win now gives Stephanie control and I can’t wait to see how she and Shane will maximize this opportunity.

Stephanie didn’t need to get knocked off the apron, take the Rock Bottom or be eyewitness to a Jericho victory. She should be in the back counting her billions, having her toes waxed or whatever rich, beautiful women do. Let those two brutes beat the bejesus out of each other and make the life of the winner a living hell.

For Vince McMahon, his first mistake was allowing Mick Foley to be reinstated as Federation Commissioner. I know that Linda was responsible publicly for that call but Mick being in is hardly the best decision for business, based on his mind-blowingly bad choice of adding RVD to the Austin-Angle mix.

Explain to me, Mick, how adding another Alliance member puts Stone Cold Steve Austin at a disadvantage? The goal for the Commissioner of the World Wrestling Federation is to get control of the champion. Van Dam didn’t lay down for Austin but how did RVD’s presence negatively affect Kurt Angle? I love Mick and am personally a friend to him and his lovely family but Foley dropped the ball huge on this one so the blame goes right to the top and that is Mr. McMahon.

Vince’s next mistake was whipping up on Shane when the pin went down. Plain and simple, Mr. McMahon took his eyes off the ball. Sure it felt good to beat on his rebel son but the future of his company was at stake. It’s like the wife who loses her wedding ring while washing the dishes. The plates are clean but what was really important goes right down the drain.

All in all, No Mercy was a great night for the World Wrestling Federation and its fans. Every match was enjoyable and other than some stitches for Austin, no one seemed seriously hurt. The criticism from fans for the involvement of the McMahon’s is misguided. They didn’t try to hurt the show. They only wanted to be hands-on in making it better. From where I sit, however, they were less than successful. Perhaps the mistakes made by Stephanie and Vince will lead to better decisions down the road and minimal involvement in the future.
