I know there are those that think this latest catchphrase is funny and all, but I personally would love to see it die and die now.
Even though it's stupid and makes no sense whatsoever I liked it a little in the beginning, but now it's gotten totally out of hand. At least in the beginning it was limited to when Austin spoke, but now the sheep have to do it after every fucking sentence of every fucking wrestler.
If that isn't bad enough, the crowd showed an unbelievable lack of class at the RAW and Smackdown shows when they had the nerve to yell What? during Lillian Garcia's singing of the National Anthem. That to me is going way too far, especially now.
I hope Vince wises up and gets Austin to stop the phrase soon. Knowing how much the fans are sheep, if Austin stops then they will eventually slow down until it's gone as well. Heaven forbid these morons have minds of their own.
Oh, and for the scumbags at the MSG shows, you proved you are beyond a shadow of a doubt this .....

I agree. I used to find it ammusing but now these people say it after everything ANY wrestler says. It's so irritating. And not only that but when Austin is talking and the crowd yells "WHAT?" he repeats himself three times before continuing. I HATE Austin being a heel but I also don't want him to be like The Rock and constantly playing with the crowd. I like him best as a good-bad guy. (If that makes sense)

I agree Moosen, it's annoying and detracts from the show.

Oh, and Lance storm agrees with you too.

This is fucking stupid. And it's even more annoying how they do it for other wrestlers not just Austin. If the Rock actually told them to shut up, maybe they would listen.....

Listen, sunshine, when the fuckin' flock (referring to the fans, not Moosen :) ) are braindead enough to start chanting an idiotic one-word catchphrase in the midst of the National Anthem, it's gone too far. If I had a hand large enough, I'd bitchslap every single jackoff who had the audacity to show that level of disrespect.

i will agree with that peach, that was out of hand, i was there too. It should never get to that point, sunshine :). However, other than that, it does get the fans involved, and that is the point of sports entertainment right?? Fan interaction?

Point taken, but there's a fine line between "amusing fan interaction" and "just flat-out gawddamn annoying." For the former, see any ECW show from Philly or Queens, when most of the fun at those shows came from bonding with your fellow fans and, in a way, the wrestlers, through various impromptu chants. One of my favorite Arena moments is when the Dudleys, dressed as Public Enemy, commented that none of the old PE "rats" were in the building. At that moment, the entire TV side of the Arena singled out ECW photographer Mary-Kate and began chanting "She's still here!" Buh Buh Ray, dressed as Johnny Grunge, took one look at her and, with a huge grin on his face, gleefully shouted "Hey, girlie, I'll meet you back at the TraveLodge!"

not only was it disrespectful during the anthem, but while my brother and i were on the train back to jersey, there were people on the train yelling what the whole time back. it even got so that they would announce the stop, and like 10 or 15 people in the car would yell what. it is getting annoying, but still funny during an austin interview (Austin only though)

OK Cluster, let me rephrase to satisfy yourself.

People who chant what 3000 times a night like it never gets played and chant what during the National Anthem because they have no respect, are idiots.

And people who are sheep who only chant things because every other city does are idiots.

And Cluster Ive been watching Wrestling since 1986 and I know as much wrestling as anybody, and if I dont like something about wrestling, I have every right to complain about it and say how much it sucks. I dont have to like everything I see, and lately I dont see anything I like in the WWF, and I dont think Im the only one. Go check the Ratings.

All you need to know about how old this shit is getting is the part about it being repeated between lines of the National Anthem!! It might be excusable in North Dakota, but in NEW YORK FUCKING CITY?!?!? I was at the Raw show, and was going out of my mind at the lack of intelligence and respect in the building. I thought it was funny in the beginning, too...but when it started being used during other wrestlers' time, it started to get out of hand. Now it is just plain ridiculous.
But, before getting arrested for smacking someone around me, I had to remind myself why it is I don't like admitting in public that I am a wrestling fan. You consider the reputation that we wrestling fans have to begin with, then add in the fact that the building is half-filled with people under the age of 15. The second best example happened during the Dudleys vs Taz & LSD match. Half the arena is chanting "E-C-Dub...E-C-Dub", and four morons in the row behind me are yelling "sucks" between each verse. Again, I was infuriated, but when I turned around to remind these four mongrels (who were participants in the chanting of "What" while Lillian was singing the 'Star Spangled Banner') that ECW is where each of the participants they were cheering for came from, I realized they probably only had 10 pubes between them, and fewer brain cells that they were fighting for control of.
We just have to remember that there are some wrestling fans who still want to believe it's real...have less common sense than the toothless rednecks most people envision when they think about the quintessential wrestling fan...and have less conscious choice about what comes out of their mouths at these events than Pavlov's Dogs.

I agree that yelling "what" or anything else during the national anthem is just plain wrong, and anybody, casual fan, huge fan, or otherwise should know this. It's cool when it's being yelled during a Stone Cold interview or segment in the ring. During any other time, it just seems retarded. I agree that at times it has gotten way out of hand. There were some times on TV watching when it was being chanted and it had nothing to do with the situation going on at the time, and it really did not seem cool at all. Probably one person at the arena yelled it to try to be funny and everyone else followed. Anyhow, I agree that it has gotten way out of hand.

i HATE msg crowds, HATE HATE HATE

its bad at tv shows, but even worse at house shows, every match gets a boring chant from some fat douchebag who knows the inside scoop because he read it on the net.

id say that about 3000-4000 fans out of the 17000 seat arena are actual true wrestling fans who enjoy the entertainment, and also the wrestling.

saying what during the national anthem is just a terrible disgrace, and you know what, i am willing to bet that someone reading this right now, was not only at the event, but also was saying what during the national anthem, GARUNTEED

Damn, I'm really surprised here. When I decided to start this thread, I was certain most if not all of you would say this What? catchphrase is the greatest thing you've ever heard and how them saying it during the National Anthem was no big deal.
It's refreshing to know that common sense is still alive and well on the board.

I'd like to introduce my new catchphrase for oa.com....

HUH?

But Lance Storm makes a lot of sense in an interview he did where he discusses how the crowd yelling "WHAT?" during other wrestlers promos actually ruins their promos. How being too "over" can cause problems for other wrestlers who are trying to get "over and especially "heels".

quote:

...Brings up the question, “Can something be too over?” It’s certainly not me who might be too over, its Steve Austin’s “WHAT?” gimmick/catch phrase. This thing is so over the crowd doesn’t just do it for him they do it every chance they get. I think I was the first person to cut a promo that night so the crowd was just dying to say their “WHATS”. Now I’m all for crowd reaction and anything that makes people want to take part and come to a show is great, but let me tell you this thing kills everyone’s promos especially the heels.

The problem is that the crowd is so tied up in getting their “WHATS” in that they no longer listen to your promo. Further more they are having so much fun doing it that it’s near impossible to get any heat. My promo took twice as long and got half the heat. It was one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever experienced in the ring. It takes you forever to get to the point because every time you pause the crowd chimes in with “WHAT” and even when you get to the point very few people listened to it and thus actually got it.

When I got to the back, after the match, I mentioned my dilemma to Jericho who echoed my sentiment. He agreed that we are all pretty much screwed doing promos for the next 6 month to a year, depending on how long “WHAT” stays over. I guess the only hope we have is that if there is a really important promo to cut, they make sure to send Austin out before it to try and let the crowd get it out of their system. Even that likely won’t work, because “WHAT” is so over the crowd seems able to do it all night.

It’s amazing how things take off and develop a life of their own. I still don’t understand why the Worm, or the people’s elbow are as over as they are, and while I’ve always found Austin’s “WHATS” to be funny, I never would have guessed it would have gotten this over. I’m still not sure whether “WHAT” is too over or not, but it’s definitely as close as you can get. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough (or talented enough for that matter) someday to have the problem of worrying about something, I do, being too over.

Thanks for posting that interview Gonzo. I was originally gonna do it myself, but then thought who the hell gives a shit what Lance Storm has to say.
Maybe since Jericho and hopefully some other top names are bitching as well, What? will die the way other worthless catchphrases have.

In my opinion if Austin were to stop playing along with the crowd when they said "WHAT?" it would die quickly. If there is no longer any interaction, and the crowd no longer gets any response from Austin or other wrestlers when they say "WHAT?" then they have no reason to continue saying it. At the very least it's worth a try.
