WWF: TAZZ INTERVIEWS GARY COLEMAN

by Buck Woodward Updated: 2/22/2001 5:50:02 PM

Tazz appeared on "The Opie & Anthony Show" (drive time talk show) on 102.7 WNEW in New York this afternoon. Here's a recap of his segment, which ran for over an hour. In fact, Tazz ended up interviewing Gary Coleman.

- They opened the segment with Tazz' theme off the new "WWF The Music: Volume 5" CD. The hosts said it was different to hear the music without Jim Ross talking over it.

- The hosts, who were hungover from the post-Grammy party, talked about drinking after the job. Tazz talked about doing Sunday Night Heat at WWF NY, and how he and Michael Cole leave as soon as the show was over to go home to their families. He said they never stick around and drink there. He said his drink of choice is Evian water.

- He said he plans on wrestling more in the future, but is enjoying the commentary and hosting Heat.

- The hosts brought up Jerry Lawler (Lawler is a frequent guest on the show). Tazz said he enjoyed kicking Jerry Lawler's ass, and wants to do it again in the future.

- The hosts make fun of the "dump button" on WWF shows, and how it always manages to miss the curses on the air.

- They rib him about his appearance at Funtime U.S.A., a local amusement center in Brooklyn. Tazz said he had a problem with kids. He said he, Rikishi and Lita did an appearance at WWF NY for the CD. The hosts go off on a tangent about how much they love Lita. Tazz got them back on track cracked a joke about how he would sign the CD's and no one would say thank you to him. Tazz would then say "thank you" to them, and they'd say "you're welcome." Tazz thought he should be the one getting thanked. Tazz then said he really loves the fans.

- Says he is never happy, because if you go through life miserable, you will never be disappointed.

- They made jokes about Vince asking him to do a gimmick he doesn't want to do, and Tazz said he doesn't worry about it. The hosts did some Vince McMahon impressions before going to break.

- The hosts plugged Gary Coleman, who was going to be in the next segment, and Tazz cracked some jokes about him.

- Tazz was asked if he was mortified by Chyna in Playboy. Tazz said he thought she looked fine.

- A person called in whose kid had met Tazz earlier today at a grocery store. The parent thanked Tazz for singing the autograph, then the child came on and thanked him.

- Tazz was asked about the Elk's Lodge in Queens, NY. Tazz said it was his second favorite building, after Madison Square Garden.

- Tazz was asked about ECW. He said he hoped they could recover, and said Paul E. was a cockroach that no one could stomp out.

- He said he has no problem with his push, and it's the fans, not him, who seems to complain about his position. He is happy with what they are doing with him.

- Another caller said he misses the Tazz that debuted at the Royal Rumble and tossed Kurt Angle around. Tazz says they are just doing something different with him now. He said the "Human Suplex Machine" from ECW is gone. He said he is happy with what he is doing.

- Tazz talked about No Way Out, and tried to get the hosts to talk about the matches, while they went off on tangents about XFL and anything else they could think of. Tazz predicts Kurt Angle will surprise everyone and win the title.

- The hosts ask him "Who throws the best fake punch?" Tazz says he has never been hit by a fake punch.

- They ask Tazz what Kane looks like with his mask off. Tazz says he is burnt.

- The show degenerates as the hosts start talking about non Tazz related stuff.

- A caller calls and complains about Tazz' lack of push in the WWF. Tazz says he is happy in the WWF.

- They ask Tazz if Vince McMahon is "giving it" to Trish. Tazz says that he thinks they are "just friends" and that they go horseback riding together.

- Yet another caller complains about Tazz' lack of push in the WWF. He then asks about Tazz' relationship with Erin O'Grady/Crash Holly. Tazz says they get along fine. He said they had a disagreement, then gets cut off when the hosts decide to play the "I'm a Hulkamaniac" song that David Sullivan used in WCW. The hosts incorrectly say it was from a Hogan album in the WWF. Tazz never got to answer the question.

- The hosts play a ID recorded by Jimmy Snuka, where he couldn't get the radio station name right. Tazz tried to talk about the respect Snuka deserves, but the hosts cut him off again.

- A caller tells Tazz he is a great announcer, and sucked as a wrestler. Tazz laughs it off.

- The hosts compared Tazz' humor to Andrew "Dice" Clay.

- A caller rips on Tazz and ECW. Tazz bashes him verbally and he's gone.

- Tazz talks about Tough Enough, as the hosts continue to veer off topic. Tazz says it will be real training, and all the students will live together in a house.

- Gary Coleman called in. Tazz told him he was a big fan. Gary didn't know who Tazz was, because he doesn't have cable. Coleman got rid of cable because he couldn't find anything on.

- Tazz asked Coleman if he would get into wrestling. Coleman said he was allergic to pain.

- Tazz actually interviewed Coleman almost as much as the hosts. Coleman plugged his column on UGO.com, and his upcoming appearance on Drew Carey.

- Tazz tried to get Gary Coleman to say "What'cha talkin' bout Tazz?" but Coleman refused to. He said he gave it up two years ago.

- Tazz asked Gary if he watches XFL. Gary says he loves the XFL. Tazz asked him if he wants to play for the XFL. Gary said sure.

- A Vince McMahon impersonator came on, and offered to have Gary Coleman wrestle Webster in a steel cage match.

- Tazz left the show, and told Gary Coleman to never mouth off to him, or he'd choke him out.

- Tazz got in final plugs for No Way Out, Heat and Tough Enough before leaving.

I did not make this up. The above really happened.

For those outside the New York area, Opie and Anthony have a strong connection with the WWF, and frequently have their stars on. These are often irreverent shows, but this one was ridiculous. Opie and Anthony were all over the place, jumping off topic and never letting Tazz get his statements out. I think they really were coming off a hangover, or were still drunk. Tazz did his best to keep the segment together despite this, and if you didn't know better, you'd think Tazz was the radio host. Tazz finally asserted himself towards the end, came across as a better radio personality than Opie & Anthony, and actually took over the show to interview Coleman.

And this is their followup:

RADIO: WELCOME OPIE & ANTHONY LISTENERS!

by Bob Ryder Updated: 2/23/2001 6:47:33 PM

Opie & Anthony, popular New York City DJ's, apparently took exception to Buck Woodward's coverage of a segment earlier this week on their show involving Tazz.
Buck apparently got under their skin, and his story was the topic of a considerable amount of discussion on this afternoon's Opie & Anthony program.

Opie & Anthony mentioned 1Wrestling repeatedly (thanks guys), and encouraged their listeners to visit the site and to send us nasty email messages.

We'll take free publicity anyway we can get it...particularly on a radio show as popular as the Opie & Anthony show!

Thanks again guys!

Does this fag think Opie and Anthony is a wrestling talk show? It was like he got offended because O&A didnt take wrestling seriously. Ohhh. What an asswipe.

After reading it again, I gotta say this guy takes wrestling WAY too seriously. Does he seriously think the WWF is anything more than entertainment? Doesnt he realize the whole interview was funny as hell? Did he miss the comedy value in asking Tazz who throws the best fake punch? Does this guy think this is all for real? He wanted them to dote over Tazz and talk about the events at No Way Out like it wasnt all already decided and could have a serious discussion of the matter like the upcoming Mets season or some REAL sporting event. What a tool. I'm discouraged to think they're are probably of millions of morons out there like this guy who truly take wrestling seriously.

Thanks Brownstone, after reading that I do believe I need to send a whopping FU to Dumbfuck Woodward. Tazz loved every minute of it, too bad this jackass can't open his mind and understand a different kind of radio.

Good point Tequilla, I'm sure that a mod will move it if they seem fit, but since it deals with O&A, I believe it will be accepted here.

Tequila, this was talked about on air, thus then it belongs in GD.

I tried getting onto their message board but they still haven't mailed me my password. I'm getting impatient.

Those guys worship wrestlers like gods at that site. It's the most pathetic thing I have ever read.

Indeed.
