In the wake of continuing talk that Hulk Hogan's venture to start a promotion with Universal Studios in Florida has been, at best, postponed for months, a group in Indiana called Main Event Championship Wrestling has announced ambitious plans to become a national promotion.

Led and financed by owner/promoter John Collins, MECW plans to bring back old style wrestling without gratuitous T and A, like the old Crockett or Watts territory had. MECW plans on having plenty of "violence", but not the sexual innuendo that often has gotten the WWF and ECW in trouble with media groups like the PTC or television stations that carry the programs. Collins, who owns an arbitration firm, plans to run the company as a corporation, giving the wrestlers health benefits as well as a 401K plan.

Collins has been very aggressive thus far in acquiring talent. He signed Buff Bagwell to an exclusive three year deal yesterday. The Sandman and Tracy Smothers are already on board, both wrestling and working for the office. Collins plans to sign Curt Hennig and Terry Taylor to deals in the next few days as well. Hennig will be brought in as a wrestler at first but will eventually take an office position. Taylor will work in the office immediately.

Collins has also spoken with Randy Savage, who told him that under the right circumstances that he too would sign with the group. They have also initiated talks with Scott Hall and the Road Warriors.

The group is going to start running television on September 18. Collins told me that they already have lined up four stations to air the show: UPN-57 in Philadelphia, The Sunshine Network in Florida, The America One network, and the UPN affiliate that serves Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois and Northern Kentucky. They hope to have a television announcing team that includes Joey Styles, Don "Cyrus" Callis and Terry Funk.

They also have sent out their television pilot, which was taped a few weeks ago, to three other networks that Collins did not want to name. The hope is to get a national clearance.

MECW plans to be very aggressive in signing talent. They have a goal of eventually running four day tours, with three crews doing shows in different towns. Other wrestlers who Collins told me he has signed, is close to signing, or hopes to sign to work for the group are Sabu, Francine, Bill Alfonso, The Public Enemy, Dawn Marie, Simon Diamond, Roadkill, Chris Chetti, Danny Doring, Blue Meanie, Jasmin St. Claire, Mikey Whipwreck, Steve Corino, Little Guido, Tony Mamaluke, Jack Victory, Wildcat Chris Harris, Michael Shane, Joey Abs, Murray "Dupp" Happer, Jason Sensation, Dave Penzer, and basically all of Shawn Michaels students.

Tours of Costa Rica and England are in the works, while they will run Canada next month. The group also plans to run shows weekly starting in the fall and has already scheduled an August 11 date at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, which Collins plans on being a blowaway show.

For the good of the business, here's hoping that the group takes off.

ok, dawn marie and francine but no t&a...yeah right! while it sounds good in theory, and i am sure the wrestling purists who want to see workers not talkers (myself included) would tune in. But the rest of the casual fans will stay away in droves because there is no rock, austin, goldberg...here is to hoping it works out though...

Ok, has ANYONE learned ANYTHING from the XFL?

Don't shoot for the stars first thing. You won't be organized, you'll be trying things out, so you won't make a great first impression. So, if you hype your show first thing, and people are curious and check out your first show and realize that the first show sucks, they won't come back when you consider with 4 hours of prime time a week, it's not like most people need THAT MUCH MORE wrestling anyway. The fact is, it won't be able to be good for a while before they get everything straightened out and your image might be so tarnished you won't be able to even GET to that point. Once again: see XFL. If they just became a Saturday afternoon TNN league at first, they could have gradually gained attention as the product got better instead of putting a sign that says, "WE SUCK" in the first week. It worked for the Arena Football League and same for ECW!!

ECW was just an indy fed that got a buzz and got big. In the end, they were raped by the Big Two to the extent that all these new fans started to see a product that sucked (and don't tell me ECW didn't suck at the end, because it was beyond awful), but that was in a way "beyond their control" and in a way, maybe they didn't make a big network deal SOON enough, but in general, they did everything right in becoming a viable big fed. They din't try to become the third part of the Big 3 at the get go.

Combined with the idiotic 1980's time warp family program they're trying to sell this as, this organization will just die within a year. No question about it.

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLO!

it will be good to see some of these ECW guys (Sabu, Sandman, etc) wrestle again, and it is a good move to have Joey Styles as part of the deal too. In my opinion, Styles should be with WWF doing shows with Ross. It is a valient effort to try to compete with WWF, and it sounds like, since there is no Hogan and Nash, etc, that the wrestlers will get a chance to shine without any politics. Good luck to them. And, where the hell is New Jack. That guy is a great showman, although his rap sheet must be very long.

for one thing they have buff and theyre gonna make their stars not acquire egos like WCW did and that proved to be the downfall. you need some established stars which it looks like they have. the reason ECW went under is because Paul E made BAD business deals.

I just hope some promotion comes up to oppose the WWF. Them having a monopoly is probably the worst thing that could happen to wrestlers as far as the wrestlers and contract's are concerned. It would be cool if this new promotion actualy worked and they were able to provide the wrestlers with with health benefits and a 401k plan. I doubt it will work though.
