| O&A Board Veteran Registered: Sep. 00  | Rapper Jay-Z pleads guilty to stabbing producer Reuters Oct 17 2001 4:24PM NEW YORK (Reuters) - Grammy Award-winning hip-hop performer Jay-Z pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge Wednesday for stabbing a record producer in a Manhattan night club nearly two years ago. Jay-Z, 31, whose real name is Shawn Carter, had been charged with two counts of first-degree assault and one of second-degree assault for stabbing rival record producer Lance Rivera, of Untertainment Records, in the stomach and back at the Kit Kat Club near Times Square in December 1999. Prosecutors had promised the hip-hop performer they would seek a sentence of three years probation if he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. He faced a possible 15-year prison term had he been tried and convicted of the original felony charges. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Micki Scherer will sentence the rapper on Dec. 6. "I stabbed Lance Rivera," Jay-Z told the judge during a brief court appearance in which he pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. The rapper said in a later statement, "I have accepted responsibility for my actions as well as the actions of others who were involved in a dispute with Lance Rivera at the Kit Kat Club in December 1999." The incident began when the rapper and Rivera got into an argument over the alleged bootlegging of Jay-Z's album, "Vol. 3 ... Life and Times of S. Carter," before its scheduled Dec. 28 release. The dispute escalated into the stabbing. The rapper also had been charged with possessing a gun in a separate incident on April 13, 2001, but the case was dismissed Tuesday when another defendant in the case admitted owning the gun. The album before this was horrible, it was just a place for every other rapper to guest star. But on the blueprint, there's a very creative use of sampling and guests are kept to a minimum.
