I've been playing bass now for about 7 years and about 3 years ago my private instructor told me to listen to a guy named Jaco Pastorius. Now if you have or haven't heard of him I strongly suggest you check this guy out. You can find his stuff on napster under his name or a band named Weather Report which is the band he started out with. This guy has had a tremendous influence on the way I play. He used alot of harmonics. Some of the songs I can suggest are:
"Potrait of Tracy" (all time fave, pretty much all harmonics)
"Teen Town" (Weather Report)
"Birdland" (Weather Report)
Alot of the guys you hear today came around because of Jaco. Please feel free to leave feedback about him here.

Thanks for the tip JBN.

Try finding the Jack Bruce & Kip Hanrahan album "Exotica" for some intense fretless bass work. Its all played while Jack is singing at the same time.

While you're at it, I hear Metallica needs a new bass player.

If this guy was in the mainstream area of music, he would have been HUGE. But he was definitely big in the jazz fusion and jazz scene. But let me know what you guys think of it when you hear it.
