i would like an opinion from anyone who checks out this page on who they think the best metal/hard rock band is. my picks are korn, e-town concrete, 40 below summer, s.o.a.d., and last but definatly not least, disturbed. let me know what you think, good or bad.

I used to be a schizophrenic, but we're okay now!

How old are you?
Your list is making me lean towards 16...
Oh...and...
Korn used to be good.
Disturbed is ok.
S.O.A.D. are great musicians...Have a hard time with the vocals.
Unfortunately most of the newer "Metal" sounds the same.
The Best Besides SABBATH...
CLUTCH...And I'm not talking about "Careful with that mic"...Which was a novelty the first 3 times I heard it...Now it's kinda annoying.

I really don't think you could say there is a "best" metal band of all time. I think there could be best band for an era. Music changes too much to have just one.

Here are mine:

60's - Hendrix
70's - Black Sabbath
80's - Metallica or Slayer
90's - Godsmack or Tool

Last year, I collaborated on a top 100 metal bands of all time list for another website. I'll see if I can dig it up. But, the top 5, I think, was:

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Opeth
Mercyful Fate

It should be buried on my hard drive somewhere, if I find it, I'll post it here for you tools to pick apart ;).

Definbitely Sabbath!

I'm more into melodic metal, but I've been listening to a lot of Sabbath-based doom metal bands lately like Church of Misery, Gammera, Electric Wizard, High on Fire...good shit!

It would be cool if you posted that list Sir O!

Here's the list. Unfortunately, I can't find the LONG preface I wrote for it either on my hard drive, or web.archive.org, and the site I wrote it for (deathvalleydriver.com, actually a wrestling site) no longer has the file. Basically, it was me and 4 other guys collaborating on the list for about 3 weeks, each coming up with our own lists, then meshing the 5 lists together, resulting in the masterpiece(?) seen below. Of course, we took a lot of shit at the time, as any list of anything will create strong disagreement, but that was the whole point, because disagreement leads to debate which leads to everyone learning from it. This was done in July, 2001. Blah blah blah...here you go.

1 Black Sabbath
2 Iron Maiden
3 Metallica
4 Opeth
5 Mercyful Fate

ahhh, you nu-metal Korn-type kids that are just discovering E-Town and are going to shows have to learn that you DONT MOSH AT HARDCORE SHOWS! if you want to go in the pit, best start practicing your spinkicks, roundhouses, kickboxing, and flips. im not trying to be a dick, im just trying to help being that the vast majority of hardcore kids at the shows despise the presence of you nu-metalers and some will find any reason to pummel the shit of you. moving on, ETC is one of my favorite bands and i guess you they are closer to metal now then the hardcore days of their demos and "Time 2 Shine." for straight brutal metal though, lately ive been on a few cds:

At the Gates-Slaughter of the Soul
both God Forbid albums
both albums from The Haunted (ex-members from At the Gates)
In Flames-Clayman

oh well, i guess i'm a nu - metal - korn type kid. i'm only 23 & i never even heard of many many of the bands on Sir Okonkwo's list. I have to be in the right type of mood to put on some judas priest or sabbath (who were the best from that time). As for "nu-metal" i would have to say Fear Factory is the best. They are the best live, they are the best on cd in my truck.

EDIT - i forgot AC/DC!

funny though - i really hated korn when they first came out. i just couldn't get into them. maybe cause at the time i was big into the NYHC scene. (i will forever love madball).

Slipknot will always suck ass.

Well, I'm only 24, so age don't mean dick. Expand your horizons, there's so much good stuff out there, it's a shame to limit yourself to a select few artists. You said you like Fear Factory, so I'd recommend giving a chance to bands like In Flames, maybe some Ministry, and maybe Death. I don't know, metal is so diverse that it's really tough to make recommendations based on such limited information.

And I LOVED Korn's first album, it's one of my favorite albums by any artist to this day, but after that, they got lame and uncreative and emotionless, IMO. At least Metallica put out 4 amazing albums, before their well ran dry.

As for Slipknot, it took me a while to warm up to them (seeing them live helped a lot), but they're far and away the best of the Nu-Metal pack (I don't consider Fear Factory Nu-Metal, more an Industrial-Hardcore-Thrash hybrid).

Pantera use to be Glam-Metal/Hair Band in the 80's, before Nirvana completely killed that Music; then they changed, I still love then though. For me the best metal Led Zep, Black Sabbatth, Ozzy, Old Sepultura(When they had Max), Slayer, first S.O.A.D. CD(I hate the second cd), and of course old Metallica. I can't think of more but there's loads. Why does eveyone hate Slipknot. I like their music, not the gimick. Same with Marilyn.

Check out In Flames, Soilwork, and Dimmu Borgir. Melodic Death Metal rules all.

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus. Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on........ This is necessary. It was daylight when you woke up in your ditch. You looked up at your sky then. That made blue be your color. You had your knife there with you too. When you stood up there was goo all over your clothes. Your hands were sticky. You wiped them on your grass, so now your color was green. Oh Lord, why did everything always have to keep changing like this. You were already getting nervous again. Your head hurt and it rang when you stood up. Your head was almost empty. It always hurt you when you woke up like this. You crawled up out of your ditch onto your gravel road and began to walk, waiting for the rest of your mind to come back to you. You can see the car parked far down the road and you walked toward it. "If God is our Father," you thought, "then Satan must be our cousin." Why didn't anyone else understand these important things? You got to your car and tried all the doors. They were locked. It was a red car and it was new. There was an expensive leather camera case laying on the seat. Out across your field, you could see two tiny people walking by your woods. You began to walk towards them. Now red was your color and, of course, those little people out there were yours too.

This statement is absurd. Glam? Hair band? Pantera? You must be thinking of some other band. Not that there's anything wrong with glam metal or hair bands. They have their place.
