I was just curious if their were any fans of hip hop on this message board. The overwhelming majority of the posts in the music forum are rock and metal related, so i was wondering if anyone had an eclectic musical taste that included hip hop. Some of my personal favs are Nas, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, De La Soul, Big L, Canibus, Chino Xl, Wu-Tang Clan, Mc Juice, Eyedea, Supernatural, The Roots, Pharcyde, Jurassic 5 and a whole lot of others. Please respond if anyone else shares my love of true hip hop with great beats and meaningful lyrics not like the same old Nelly and Jay-Z you see on MTV.

I used to like it a lot but it became so commercialized, superficial, and monotonous that I just got sick of it and stopped listening. Although I did pick up Nas' new cd and like it very much.

Alot of hip-hop has become commercialized, using the same old money/cars/bling formula to never ending success, but theres still alot of real hip hop out there that should not be overlooked. Any one of the artists I mentioned b4 will nver spit a bar about how much money they got or how many bentleys are in their driveway. Give some of them a shot and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. If you want some particular song recommendations, let me know and I'd be glad to help you out.

I've listened to all of them except Supernatural and Pharcyde. Ever heard of Rise? He is a very talented lyricist.

miata, i think you know i listen to good hip-hop, and i have to say this past week i discovered a great cd by a guy who i never really liked. Cam'ron's "S.D.E." is pretty damn good for the same guy who put out the flamboyantly gay "Horse and Carriage" on "True Confessions." if anyone who listens to decent rap doesnt have it, i suggest you pick it up...

Anyone hear the jewish rapper Remedy? His skills put Eminem to shame. Another fine WU product.

S.D.E. is a really good album especially the title track with Biggie singing the hook and you're right cuz I couldnt believe that it was the same guy when he put out Horse and Carriage and what means the world to you. I still have faith in his talents tho and hopefully he'll be able to produce some more gems and not fall victim to the Ja Rule syndrome.

I've never heard of either Remedy or Rise but I am going to check them out and I'll get back to you with my opinions. Eminem is really a big disappointment to me though. He actually has alot of talent and was once a respected name in the underground when he used to battle Mc Juice and the like. He chose not to display that talent to the best of his abilities tho opting instead to follow Dre and do whaever was necesary to make as much money as he could. I mean he still has some great songs, most recently his collabo with Jay-Z on Renegade (where he clearly outshined Jay), but on the whole he really isnt living up to anywhere near his potential.

i've always been into de la soul, i like the roots and outkast, and tribe, and some other stuff. i don't spend too much time looking up hip-hop acts, but if someone is playing something i like, i'll pick up a record here and there. you're right about that mtv-style rap not being very good. i like some of the newer-old stuff, like nwa and public enemy. those guys were violent as hell, but had some real stuff to say too.

"Somebody took my phone number and called Afghanistan. Afghanistan! I've never talked to anyone in Afghanistan, I don't know nobody in Afghanistan, and even if did know anyone, I wouldn't talk to that Afghan ass for three hours! I won't talk to my daddy for three hours."

i think im one of the only people to buy Remedy's "The Genuine Article" and it really disappointed me. yea on that 8-minute or so freestyle that hes on with some of the Wu is really good, and his skills shine sometimes, but he really isnt that great. next big white rapper who definitley has skills and can flow is Jo-Jo Pelligrino straight outta the Southshore SINY.

I'm a fan of most of the stuff that was already named...Wu, Mos Def and Talib Kweli (Blackstar) Pharoah Monch, Jurassic 5, De La and so forth. Dilated Peoples' "Expansion Team" is one of the best albums to come out in 2001.

Someone mentioned NWA - there are three NWA albums that I know of - "The Posse," "Straight Outta Compton," and "Niggaz 4 Life."

I don't dig most commercial rap, but Jay-Z's Unplugged performance was pretty cool. Probably because he had the Roots backing him up.

What really does it matter how many records anybody sells? I mean some of the best albums I've ever purchased never have and never wil go gold. If Ready to Die only sold 1,000 copies I'd still say that Biggie was one of the best that ever lived if not the best. Some artists really aren't in it for the money, they have a genuine love for hip-hop, and they put out what they feel even though they know deep down that it won't move alot of units.

I don't think there's anything wrong with hip-hop going "mainstream" or "commercial," but to me a lot of what's out there is just flat-out weak. I mean, I can barely listen to Hot 97 at all anymore, although there was a time when they were playing a lot of good shit. But, that's just one man's opinion.

On average at hot97, the same five damn songs are on and heavily repeated...i mean like 4-5 times within a 5-6 span.

I still like hip-hop, but I liked it way more a couple years back, I hate Nelly and whenever I hear his songs I pour beer on the radio.

Not a big fan of hip-hop, although Naughty by Nature are still among my favorites. More than hip-hop though, I wonder if any are at all familiar with dancehall reggae. There's some eclecticism for you.

If you want to avoid the commercialized shit that's all about money, women, and cars, check out anything from the Quannum Project (Quannum). I'm also getting into Del the Funky Homosapien (the lyricist from the Gorillaz song "Clint Eastwood").
