The discussion the other day about how poorly Robert Plant was live, etc., lead to the revival of an old conversation between myself and a few friends about Fantasy/Roto/All-Star Rock groups. I'm sure this has come up in the music forum before, but I couldn't find a discussion on it, so here goes my two cents:

Vocals: Freddy Mercury - incredible song writer, nearly unmatched stage presence, vocal range of a Broadway performer (insert gay joke here). Alternates:

Guitar: Edward Van Halen - OK, so I'm an EVH mark. He may be a class A prick in his personal life, but he's still the god of ten fingers and six strings.
Alternates: (1) Randy Rhoads - we'll never know how good he could have been. (2) Stevie Ray Vaughan - may have saved electric blues, with "the soul of a black man trapped in a white man's body." *Too many greats to list, but these are my favorite three.

Bass Guitar: Billy Sheehan - one of the few live bass solos that does not = bathroom/beer break.
Alternate: Les Claypool - I'm not a huge fan of Primus, or The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, or Oysterhead...but my little brother has made me listen to this stuff and I can't deny how talented this guy is.

Drums: Tommy Lee - if he ever remembers how good he was behind a kit and drops the rap-rock bullshit, he'll be the king of the skins once again. Even better than hearing him play is watching him play...unmatched entertainment for a drummer.

Vocals: Maynard James Keenan. I love his voice and loves what he has to say.
Lead Guitar: Stevie Ray Vaughn. He was so incredible and such a loss. I play the guitar and am very picky about who I say is amazing, but I never have a bad thing to say about him.
rhythm guitar: Dave Mustaine. Most incredible rhythm guitarist of all time. He is really a lead guitarists, but in Megadeth he also sings so that makes him do less soloing. I've actually heard that some of the lead guitarist in Megadeth have been able to play the solos and not the rhythms.
Drums: Keith Moons. No explaination needed.
Bass: Geddy Lee. He is one of the most amazing players out there. I know great bassists that can't even play some of his parts, while he not only plays, but sings during them.

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow. Let me lay my holy hand upon you. My Gods will becomes me. When he speaks out, he speaks through me. He has needs like I do. We both want to rape you. Guitarists: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix - The two best guitarists ever, in my opinion.

Singer: Travis Meeks - I think this guy has a great voice.

Drummer: Neil Peart - One of the most underrated and overlooked drummers of all time.

Bass: Steve Harris - Nothing special to add here, I just think he's a great bass player.

Let's take a blast to the moon baby

I sit around wishing you well

How I'm craving you, yeah!

Every time I'm near you

I always wanna swallow you down

I'll be right here if ya' need me

In my life, I'll need you here, don't ask why

I'll never disappear

Why is it everyday that I feel the pain?

Let's take a trip to the stars far away

Where were you when I was down?

Staring into the dead

My pain is caused by my pleasure

My soul mate lives in your body

I can't get you out of my head

It never goes away

In my life, I'll need you here, don't ask why

I'll never disappear

In your eyes you can bid me farewell

But don't ever try to understand the situation

Why is it everyday that I feel the pain?

Drummer: John Bonham, no matter how cliched it may be, he is the greatest rock drummer ever. The sheer energy and massive power is unmatched. Stewart Copeland would be a close second, followed by Neil Peart. Buddy Rich will always in my opinion be the greatest drummer ever though, but it says Fantasy "Rock" group.

Bass Guitar: None other than Jaco Pastorius, his genius on bass was equivalent to hendrix's on guitar. Bar none trully the greatest bass guitarist who ever lived.

Guitar: who else? Do I even have to say it? Why bother even thinking for more than the time it would take to say Jimi Hendrix. Whoever says cliched and that why does everyone have to say hendrix when you talk about guitars? Well for a fuckin reason, why talk about Jordan when you mention basketball? Why talk about Ali when you say boxing? Cause they are the greatest at their chosen fields, nuff said.

Lead Vocals: This is the tough one, this is one I can not make one definitive choice. It depends on the type of music and what kind of voice is needed. I'd pick Robert Plant over Axl Rose cause it's the same voice basically. I'd pick Hettfield for his just amazing pipes, he's one of the few who can pull off the heavy rock and slow rock ballad both perfectly. Mercury also comes to mind but maybe top 5 for me. Mike Patton would probably be in the top 2 for me as well. This is truthfully the toughest choice for me.

Of all the classes that stand face to face with the bourgeoisie today, the proletariat alone is a genuinely revolutionary class. The other classes decay and finally disappear in the face of Modern Industry; the proletariat is its special and essential product. The lower middle class, the small manufacturer, the shopkeeper, the artisan, the peasant, all these fight against the bourgeoisie, to save from extinction their existence as fractions of the middle class. They are therefore not revolutionary, but conservative. Nay, more, they are reactionary, for they try to roll back the wheel of history. If, by chance, they are revolutionary, they are only so in view of their impending transfer into the proletariat; they thus defend not their present, but their future interests; they desert their own standpoint to place themselves at that of the proletariat. The "dangerous class", the social scum, that passively rotting mass thrown off by the lowest layers of the old society, may, here and there, be swept into the movement by a proletarian revolution; its conditions of life, however, prepare it far more for the part of a bribed tool of reactionary intrigue.

I agree here, but do you think his voice has lost something over the years? I remember when Ride the Lightning came out and his voice was so unique and powerful. I still think he has a great voice but it's not the same for me as when he was younger.

Well av8er I would assume all of out picks would be in their primes. Most of the people on our lists are way past their primes, some are even dead. I'm sure Morrison doesn't sound as good today as he did in 1967. Nothing compares to peoples early works cause it's so raw and unpolished.

With the exception of Pantera being that they started out as a glam metal band.

LOL.

I should have said, but I wasn't really asking in the context of this thread. I was just asking in general what your feelings were about the change in his voice.

So I see said the blind man to his deaf dog. Well anyone who's abused a larynx like Hettfield for over 2 decades will undoubtebly suffer some loss in their vocal capabilities. But I'd accept Hettfield now over most of today's so-called rockers.

Vocals = a hybrid of Maynard James Keenan for his writing style and Chris Cornell cause I think that his voice sounds incredible.

Drums = Danny Carey. Yeah, I know that I am sticking to a Tool theme, but I think that he is as good as any of the great drummer's mentioned and better than any drummer out there now.

Bass = Les Claypool (i think that's the guy from Primus). I love his style.

Guitar = Jerry Cantrel, as long as he doesn't get to sing . . . ever. He is a great song writer and a great player.

It's not like I killed someone. It's not like I drove a spitefull spear into your side. You talk to Jesus Christ as if he knows the reasons why he did it all for you.

Not that I can play guitar but when froy sings "Born To Run", I'm pulling the Jeff Jarret and cracking it over his head.

Ian Andersen on Flute

Maybe Mick Fleetwood on Drums,
