'Fraid it is true. The story is being splashed all over the Seattle news stations. A true waste. If you listen to Alice in Chains Unplugged and don't and don't appreciate the music, you have no soul.

Angry Chair

Written by Layne Staley

Sitting on an angry chair
Angry walls that steal the air
Stomach hurts and I don't care

What do I see across the way
See myself molded in clay
Stares at me, yeah I'm afraid
Changing the shape of his face

Candles red I have a pair
Shadows dancing everywhere
Burning on the angry chair

Little boy made a mistake
Pink cloud has now turned to grey
All that I want is to play
Get on your knees, time to pray boy

I don't mind, yeah
I don't mind, yeah
Lost my mind, yeah
Can't find it anywhere

Corporate prison, we stay
I'm a dull boy, work all day
So I'm strung out anyway

Loneliness is not a phase
Field of pain is where I graze
Serenity is far away

Saw my reflection and cried
So little hope that I died
Feed me your lies, open wide
Weight of my heart, not the size

I don't mind, yeah
I don't mind, yeah
Lost my mind, yeah
Can't find it anywhere

Pink cloud has now turned to gray
All that I want is to play
Get on your knees time to pray

Body found in home may be that of Alice in Chains singer

Group soared with grunge movement

Saturday, April 20, 2002

By CANDACE HECKMAN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

A body was found Friday at the University District home of Layne Staley, the
lead singer of the seminal Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains.

Law enforcement sources said the body was Staley's, but would not give
specifics and referred all questions to police spokesmen -- who did not return
repeated calls for comment.

According to the Seattle Fire Department's dispatch log, an
aid response was called to Staley's last known address in
the 4500 block of Eighth Avenue Northeast in the
University District, a section of the city where many
boarding homes are located.

The Medical Examiner's office said late last night that they
responded to a call at Staley's address and found someone
who appeared to have been dead for several days.

They have not officially identified the person.

Staley, 34, wrote lyrics that dealt with the darkness of his struggle with heroin
abuse.

Alice in Chains debut album, "Facelift," was released in 1990 and the group
quickly rose to prominence along with other bands from the tight-knit local
music community like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden; one of Pearl
Jam's first shows was as an opening act for Alice in Chains.

In 1992, the group released their critically acclaimed album "Dirt," which
featured the hit singles "Would?" and "Rooster." The band distinguished itself
from its Seattle peers with a hard, morbid sound, and Staley's music often
touched on drugs.

According to a fan Web site, Staley was born in 1967 in Kirkland.

The first instrument he played was the drums at the age of 12. He later played
in different bands around Seattle.

At a party in 1987, Staley met Jerry Cantrell, who introduced him to Mike
Starr (bass) and Sean Kinney (drums).

They decided to start a band and Alice In Chains was born.

In a 1996 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Staley spoke of how his drug
use influenced his lyrics.

"I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by
writing about them," Staley told the magazine. "Here's how my thinking pattern
went: When I tried drugs, they were (expletive) great, and they worked for me
for years, and now they're turning against me -- and now I'm walking through
hell, and this sucks."

In the same article, he said: "I'm gonna be here for a long time. I'm scared of
death, especially death by my own hand. I'm scared of where I would go. Not
that I ever consider that, because I don't."

Staley told the magazine he did not want to be seen as a rock god or martyr.

"I saw all the suffering that Kurt Cobain went through. I didn't know him real
well, but I just saw this real vibrant person turn into a real shy, timid,
withdrawn, introverted person who could hardly get a hello out ... At the end
of the day or at the end of the party, when everyone goes home, you're stuck
with yourself."

TIMELINE

EARLY 1987 -- Alice in Chains forms in Seattle.

APRIL 1989 -- After being pursued by several record companies, the band
signs with Columbia Records.

AUGUST 1990 -- Alice in Chains' debut album, "Facelift," is released. Song
"We

Die Young" becomes top 5 metal track.

DECEMBER 1990 -- Band sells out Moore Theater in Seattle.

JANUARY 1991 -- Band nominated for American Music Award; makes
move debut playing part of sleazy bar band in Cameron Crowe's film
"Singles."

AUGUST 1991 -- Alice in Chains makes national network TV debut on
ABC.

MARCH 1992 -- Band plays Seattle host on "Entertainment Tonight" and
takes

viewers on tour of Seattle's music scene -- pool halls, rocks clubs and other

revered dens of decadence.

SEPTEMBER 1992 -- "Dirt" is released. Written entirely by the band, the
album

paves a grim descent into a private hell.

NOVEMBER 1995 -- "Alice in Chains" debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Top
200 album chart.

SEPTEMBER 1996 -- Band is nominated for best hard rock video at the
MTV Music Video Awards.

Heaven Beside You
Alice in Chains
Be what you wanna be
See what you came to see
Been what you wanna be
I don't like what I see

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you... Hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you... Hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you... Hell within
And you think you have it still, heaven inside you

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up, and I'm not blind
I'm just see through faded, super jaded
And out of my mind

Do what you wanna do
Go out and seek your truth
When I'm down and blue
Rather be me than you

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you... Hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you... Hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you... Hell within
And you wish you had it still, heaven inside you

So there's problems in your life

This is tragic, they were a tremendous band, and he was very talented. In my opinion, "Jar of Flies" was their best album.

If his life isn't a deterrent for doing drugs, I don't know what is.

Aw man, he was one of the greats. . .here's one of his poems I found on the web. . ..

CORE
~LAYNE STALEY~

Self Imprisonment...
I suppose somewhere inside me
I yearn for freedom from
that which holds me stagnant.
Overexaggeration turns under estimated emotion.
EMOTION...
Why the urgency to hide
and slow the flow of that which could,
and perhaps will,
improve the burning inside?
I am protecting my pain.
It is mine...
and I want so badly
to keep my pain to myself.
But, in doing so,
I am hurting so many who cross me,
or care for me...
Aching for love and acceptance,
only to throw you down
in the latter
of our shared love...
Yet, anger and guilt not shared
between me and you.
You are blamed for all that is
a mystery within myself...burning.
Oh, I pray that I might someday
throw a blanket over that angry child...
If the strength is found
within the CORE of my being.
His tears soak my heart
and weight it down.
I am drowning and I am tired
and so very, very lonely.
I am.....

"Down In A Hole"

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers
In a tomb...in bloom

Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it like a grave
You don't understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
Who won't let himself be

Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, losin' control
I'd like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied

Down in a hole and they've put all
The stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty
Of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more
of my feelings beneath

Oh I want to be inside of you

Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, out of control

I'd like to fly but my
Wings have been so denied

I think my mask of sanity              is about to slip

THis is fucking weird. My best friend is staying at school with me this week and this morning I set my alarm to my cd player. WE randomly woke up to "Grind" by Alice in Chains. I looked over at him and said, "I wish I could be Layne Staley". NO CLUE THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED!!! Fuck. I love Alice In Chains. Andy Wood, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley.....RIP. This is my favorite AIC song ever.

Nutshell

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead

Oooh...Oooh...
Oooh...Oooh...

“The window burns to light the way back home. A light that warms no matter where they've gone. They're off to find the hero of the day. But what if they should fall by someone's wicked way. Still the window burns. Time so slowly turns. And someone there is sighing. Keepers of the flames. Do ya feel your name? Can't you hear your babies crying? Mama they try and break me. Still they try and break me. 'Scuze me while I tend to how I feel. These things return to me that still seem real. Now deservingly this easy chair. But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair. Don't want your aid. But the first I've make. For years can't hold or feel. No, I'm not all me. So please excuse me. While I tend to how I feel. But now the dreams and waking screams. That ever last the night. So build the wall, behind the crawl. And hide until it's light. So can you hear your babies cryin' now? Still the window burns. Time so slowly turns. And someone there is sighing. Keepers of the flames. Do ya feel your name? Can't you hear your babies crying?” - Metallica

I'm deeply saddened by this, AIC was one of if not my favorite band. It sucks that he became addicted to drugs and lost the battle. I had been hearing for the past few months that the other members of the band had been wanting to get back together but they weren't going to do anything without him. Guess it won't happen now. Man in the Box and Rooster were my favorite AIC songs.

God rest your soul Layne, hope you find the peace in death that you never found in life. We'll never forget you. :( :( :(

'Alice in Chains' Frontman Dead At 34

April 20, 2002

By KOMO Staff & News Services

SEATTLE - Layne Staley, lead singer for the grunge band Alice in Chains, was found dead in his apartment, authorities said Saturday. He was 34.

Tests were being conducted to determine the cause of death, the King County Medical Examiner's office said. His body was found Friday evening, and he had apparently been dead for at least a few days.

"It was natural or an overdose - that's the way it was determined by our investigators," said Seattle Police spokesman Duane Fish.

Police did not say whether drug paraphernalia was found at the scene.

With Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Alice in Chains was one of the most prominent bands of the Seattle grunge scene of the early '90s. The group was known for its dark, menacing sound, which combined grunge and heavy metal, and often wrote about heroin.

"He was a sweet guy, but very troubled," said Charles Cross, a former editor of the defunct Seattle music magazine The Rocket who recently wrote a biography of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. "He lost his girlfriend to drugs a number of years ago. People still had hopes he would turn around. It's a sad tale."

While Alice in Chains didn't garner as much respect as Nirvana or several other local groups, the band's influence still reverberates, Cross said.

"Critically, they'll never rate in the same pantheon as Nirvana, but they were a band that inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of other bands," Cross said. He pointed to Creed and Godsmack, a band that took its name from an Alice in Chains song.

"They had huge commercial aspirations from the beginning. They fulfilled that, and so much of that was Layne's voice," Cross said.

His voice ranged from a low baritone to a sustained, piercing wail; many a bar-band singer frayed vocal cords in the early 1990s trying to imitate it. Staley also played some guitar for the group.

Chad Schuster, 21, a University of Washington student and guitarist in a garage band, came with other Alice and Chains fans to an impromptu memorial at the Seattle Center.

He said the group's music was very dark, but it was melodic and hopeful at the same time. It was heavy metal that didn't hurt your ears."

Staley, despite his well-documented drug problems, was an inspiration for many, Schuster said.

"He was open about his drug problem and his struggles with life, and I think a lot of people can relate to that."

Fan Lorn Conner, 18, a senior at Chrysalis High School in Woodinville who also came to the memorial site, was less forgiving.

"Seattle always produces so much talent, and they always end up messing it up," he said.

In a 1996 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Staley spoke of how his drug use influenced his lyrics.

"I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them," he told the magazine. "Here's how my thinking pattern went: When I tried drugs, they were (expletive) great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turning against me - and now I'm walking through hell, and this sucks."

The group's first album, "Facelift," was released in 1990. It later released "Dirt" and "Alice in Chains." The group's hits included "Man in the Box," "Them Bones," "Rooster," and "Would?"

The latter song was partly inspired by the 1990 heroin overdose death of Andrew Wood, singer of the seminal grunge group Mother Love Bone.

Alice in Chains stopped touring in the mid-'90s, when Staley's drug use proved too great an obstacle. He began a number of stints in rehab.

Staley's body was found just over 8 years after Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Heroin was found in Cobain's bloodstream.

In the 1996 interview, Staley reflected on Cobain's death: "I saw all the suffering that Kurt Cobain went through. I didn't know him real well, but I just saw this real vibrant person turn into a real shy, timid, withdrawn person who could hardly get a 'hello' out. ... At the end of the day or at the end of the party, when everyone goes home, you're stuck with yourself."

Official and depressing. I've been trying to write news stories for the wire service I work for, but I keep getting bummed out and move on to something else. I would have loved to see the band get back together again. There will never be another band like Alice in Chains. R.I.P. Layne.

It's not a surprise, but still hurts to hear. Heroin destroys lives, but makes great music. You'd think people would learn by now, stick to pot, it ain't gonna kill you. Imagine if he wasnt on the horse, how many cds they would have made. I never got to see them live, so i'm going to see Nickleback, with Jerry Cantrell opening. I live on Long Island, and was this close to flying out to Detroit when the opened for Kiss the first show of their reunion tour back in the 90's. I didn't have the money to fly. I'm kickin myself now for not scraping up a few more dollars.
