Yes, it sounds like a really odd or stupid request. Well I'm trying to find a really good sad and depressing album. Just asking for some people's opinions.

THE RIVER
by Bruce

I come from down in the valley
where mister when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
when she was just seventeen
We'd ride out of that valley down to where the fields were green

We'd go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we'd ride

Then I got Mary pregnant
and man that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
and the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle
No flowers no wedding dress

That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we did ride

I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company
But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember
Mary acts like she don't care

But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
that sends me down to the river
though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
my baby and I
Oh down to the river we ride

My girlfriend used to cry to Tchaikovski's Nutcracker Suite...I'm not sure it was because it made her sad, though. Chicks are weird.

It wasn't lies, it was just...bullshit.

The River sort of runs the gamet.

It has it's upbeat & happy tunes, but then gets very dark.

It varies, but I have always said, that no matter what kind of mood you're in, you can always find yourself on Disc 2.

Here's one of my favorite more obscure Bruce tunes, that you will never hear on the radio.

Drive All Night

When I lost you honey sometimes I think I lost my guts too
And I wish God would send me a word, send me something I'm afraid to lose
Lying in the heat of night like prisoners all our lives
I get shivers down my spine and all
I wanna do is hold you tight

I swear I'll drive all night just to buy you some shoes
And to taste your tender charms
And I just wanna sleep tonight again in your arms

Tonight there's fallen angels and they're waiting for us down in the street

Tonight there's calling strangers, hear them crying in defeat
Let them go, let them go, let them go, do their dances of the death (let 'em go right
ahead)
You just dry your eyes girl, and c'mon c'mon c'mon let's go to bed baby, baby,
baby

I swear I'll drive all night just to buy you some shoes
And to taste your tender charms
And I just wanna sleep tonight again in your arms

There's machines and there's fire waiting on the edge of town
They're out there for hire but baby they can't hurt us now

Cause you've got, you've got, you've got, you've got my love, you've got my love
Through the wind, through the rain, the snow, the wind, the rain
You've got, you've got my, my love, heart and soul

It might help if you tell us what kind of sad you're looking for. James Horner's score for Aliens is pretty sad. :(

Razorblade Suitcase by Bush. It's a pretty depressing album. It's great though.

Kramden, you're absolutely right I should have been more specific in the question. I mostly meant songs about being alone and what have you. I guess that the best example I can think of theme-wise would be Under The Bridge about being alone and what have you. Yes I know it's about heroin, but it gives you that kind of lonely sad feeling.

There's always The Wall and The Darkside of the Moon by Floyd. There's some real toe-tappers on those records.

I never really thought of Dark Side as a sad or depressing album. I always considered it a purely night time listen though.
