Adding another chapter to New York's violence-saturated gangsta rap industry, Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z and three other men were arrested this morning and charged with illegal gun possession outside a midtown nightclub.

The rapper, whose given name is Shawn Carter, was busted shortly after 3 a.m. when a loaded Glock handgun was found in the car he and the other suspects were driving away from Club Exit at W. 56th St. and 11th Ave., police said. Thankfully no shots were fired.

Police said plainclothes cops from the street crime unit saw a man open the front passenger door of the 2001 Chevy Suburban, remove a handgun, stuff it in his waistband and climb in.

They said the cops stopped the SUV a block away and recovered the gun.

All four were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Along with Carter, who's 31, police arrested Hamzah Hewitt, 39; Romero Chambers, 43, and Tyran Smith, 28.

The weapon, a .40-caliber Glock 23 semi-automatic with 10 rounds in it, was found on Hewitt, police sources told the Express.

Chambers ownes R&K Limousines, which features such rappers as Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and Chante Moore in its advertising and advises customers to "take a back seat like the stars."

It was not immediately known whether the SUV belonged to the limo company.

The arrest comes at a bad time for Jay-Z. He was indicted last January for allegedly stabbing hip-hop impresario Lance (Un) Rivera during a 1999 nightclub brawl and is due to appear in court next week for a pre-trial conference on that case, the Manhattan district attorney's office told the Express.

The pending case could affect bail in the new one, said a spokeswoman for the D.A.

Following the example of Sean (Puffy) Combs — acquitted on gun charges in a high-profile trial last month — Jay-Z has transformed himself from a Brooklyn rapper rhyming about the thug life in Brooklyn's Marcy Houses into an entertainment mogul with a fashion line and record production company.
