I was gonna uprade my browser to IE6 when I thought that there might be a downside to it. Is there? Is there any reason that I shouldn't, or is upgrading always good?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

I upgraded to it and I can honestly say I don't know what the difference is between this and IE 5.5
I can tell you though that I've had no problems with it at all so that's a good point.

Looking for alternatives to AOL? NICE!

Well any ISP comes with their own email through M$ Outlook Express. You can use Eudoramail as your client email software. To get this visit Eudoramail. It is probably wiser to use that than Outlook cause most viruses are written to exploit the Outlook program. You can also use a Web Based email system like Yahoo mail, Hotmail or evn Yourname@opieanthony.com Register for OA mail

As far as an alternative to AOL for IMs go, you can use AOL Instant Messenger for the web that is 100% compatibble to regular AOL IMs with a buttload of more features -- Chat, File Transfer, Image Transfer, and Voice, so I hear, @ AIM Version 4.7

As far as getting rid of AOL as your dial up ISP, I hear Earthlink is one of the best, if not the best, national carrier.

You have made a very wise choice by deciding to give up the AOHell today. We, and i speak on behalf of the members NOT the site, are very proud of you!

I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

If you're using an ISP other than AOL, then that said provider should give you an email account - usually through their email server and your version of Outlook or Outlook Express. There's also Hotmail, but I get a shitload of spam in my Hotmail account - and I hardly use it, figure that one out.

Theres ICQ and Yahoo Messenger, but I believe theres a little something called Trillian that you can use to contact people on all different applications. (ie, AIM users are restricted to talking to only AIM users, same for Yahoo Messenger, etc). I personally use AIM because I don't know anyone using anything else - until such need arises, I'll probably go to Trillian or anything thats better and similar at that time.

Also, in regards to IE6, I had no alternative but to up to it when I went with XP, and I like it - it seems a little faster, but I think that has a little to do with XP. I do get a page crash here and there, but it only happens on one specific site (not this one), so I don't blame the browser, I blame that site's HTML coding/server's protocol.

When it comes to MS stuff, don't upgrade unless you have to or you can easily revert to your previous settings should you not like what the upgrade has to offer.

Regarding Trillian www.trillian.cc NOT .com / net or whatever -

There is another program just like Trillian called Odigo. I don't know which came out first or which oner is better, but it is an alternative to the alternative should anyone need it.

As far as spam on Hotmail.. that does not surprise me at all. The yourname@opieanthony.com is free, no spam email account UNLESS you choose to subscribe to the spam services upon setting up your account. Uncheck all the spam boxes for various services if you choose to sign up with oa.com mail.

Does that do IRC too? Like dalnet, efnet, etc. ?

I been using Odigo for a while now. And, love it. Same kinda thing. It does AIM,ICQ,Yahoo,MSN,etc. and any others that you can get the server info for can be plugged in manually. Also shows you other uses on same webpage. And, the super coolest thing... can rename ppl so you can make their AIM name match their board name on your buddy list.

Well, I wouldn't want to upset slash's "momma"... lol

YD, IE6 is, in fact, "good" but it's a browser not an ISP.

IE6 like Netscape and Mosaic are merely the pretty user interface that allow you to see web content in a more humane fashion.

What our distiquished moderator slash was asking is who is now providing you internet access. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the facility that gets you connected to the internet.

Who sends you a bill every month?
Who's phone number do you call to get on the internet?
What comes after the @ in your e-mail address?
Who hosts your homepage?

These things are offered by almost all ISP's. (Including AOL) Most charge in the neighborhood of $20 per month for these basic services.

ooooohhhhh. I really need to learn more about computers. RoadRunner is what I use. I have had it for quite some time now. The only reason I stil had AOL is because we were paying for an account anyway because of my sister. It's her only means of getting on the net.

EDIT - Also seeing as how my sig pic is acting up again can one of recommend a more reliable host?

Yes, I noticed that before you replied. The way the software works is the time stamp registers when you click the Post Reply Button within the thread NOT when you click the Reply to Topic on the reply to topic page. You wre still typing your long winded reply that obviosly took longer than 6 minutes to manifest itself from your brain to a posted reply.

That whole greyed out aligned to the right was another one of my creations here that got taken over cause some dummies couldn't keep their traps shut over 6 months ago.

Speaking of trillian, anyone have problems connecting to AIM today? I haven't been able to log in to the server, and I don't know if AOL changed something to block it or just bad connection.

I'm running IE6, and I don't see an improvement - if anything, I seem to be getting a quirk where the encoding chooses iso instead of windows, and it screws up html pix. Could be something with Norton though.

Where does your sister live? If she lives in the same house as you then get a router and hook her up to Roadrunner as well. Totally Dump AOL.

Sig pic hosting sites? Try Homstead or 50 Megs

Speaking of trillian, anyone have problems connecting to AIM today? I haven't been able to log in to the server, and I don't know if AOL changed something to block it or just bad connection.

I don't use Trillian or AIM or even Odigo or any IM software - I was just about to until our lovely GrkqtOandAfan posted AIM Flaw - Be Careful...just a Heads Up... during the first few days of the new year. Let me tell you, worrying about security flaws in your Instant Messaging software is no way to start off the new year!

Write To Me Here

Luckily it's still funny. And, far be it from me to post personal info.

6 minutes? Was it that fast. I was feeling a bit pressured while composing that reply. For I knew that after all my taunting, you'd be on the look out for inacuracies. Also, I felt a need to clarify the vocabulary without getty overly technical with the jargin.

YD, you should be able to host your sig pic from either your AOL or Road Runner accounts.

The problem you're having with your current sig host is that yahoo is far too popular. They get over loaded with traffic and your sig suffers for it. But, it's free.

You might try Visit this Website. They are as reliable if not more so and free as well. But, they've recently hinted that they will not be allowing remote file hosting with their free accounts much longer.

Thanks to RonRon5477 for sig modifications.
