I think it all started with the Declaration of Independence -- the idea that we had the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That pursuit is what took America from the revolution to the computer age in 200 years. But the progress has come at a price. The obvious being the people that were exploited to make it possible; the not so obvious being us, the first group of people that were given no obvious frontiers to conquer. We hear stories that about the good old days that don't seem to apply anymore. It's a generation gap that leaves us without role models. But the bright side is that without role models, there are no roles. Maybe that's what the 60s were all about -- getting rid of the roles. But what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, what do we replace them with? Without any guidance, the choices become overwhelming. Sometimes it just makes everything feel hopeless. So we destroy our bodies in the search of an ideal. Try to salvage relationships that don't work. We feel we must do something, instead of doing something that we feel. It is the prison of self-imposed momentum, and the sad part is that we get used to it. It reminds me of a song I heard the other day. It's called "The Going Nowhere Fast." But the people I have met here have shown me another side of Nowhere. They've pointed out the beautiful irony that stagnation makes it easy to stop and smell the roses, if we just let it. What would we be if we had nothing to rebel against? Well we could finally be ourselves, the first group of people who stopped looking for the answers long enough to appreciate the questions. And all we have to do is to make our own Declaration of Independence. We can embrace the right to life and liberty by simply realizing that happiness exists -- not to pursue, but to accept. After that the only challenge would be to make sure with the rest of our lives that we weren't just another fad. I don't know, it's an idea. What do you think?

Try browseing out to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder and double clicking the font name. Typically *.ttf, true type font. If it's not fucked it will open and that usually does the trick. You may need a reboot.

If not, I know how to manually edit the registry to do it immediately, but with your typing track record I think we should try this first. :)

With Win '98 and above, all you have to do is drag & drop any new fonts into C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. They will install themselves.

PS: [Sarcasm]Make sure to unzip them first...[/Sarcasm]

4. Click on Fonts. The Fonts window opens.

5. Click on File, which is located on the menu bar.

6. Click on Install New Font.

8. Select the font you want to install from the fonts listed in the List of Fonts box.

9. Select Copy Fonts to Fonts Folder (this will put a copy of the font you are installing in the Fonts folder).

10. Click on OK.

Sorry I was watching the Family Guy/Greg the Bunny/Family Guy spectacular.

Has this been resolved yet?

My first question would have been:
"What kind of font file is it that you're trying to install? *.fon *.pfb *.pfm *.shx *.ttf etc. ?"

Nope. I have tried everything that was suggested above except regedit. And it is a .TTF.

1. Click Start - Run

2. type regedit

3. browse out to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts

4. Click Edit - New - String Value

5. Name the font whatever you want then right click the new font name, and hit modify, now enter the exact file name of the font, use the other strings as reffernce.

6. Reboot.

7. Give Slash a rimjob.

8. Use fun new font.

Hmm...

And, what exactly is the problem? Is the font in C:\windows\fonts ? Or, can you not get the font to even show up in there?

In this case, I'd be curious where this font came from. Maybe the file is corupt or not a valid font file. Maybe try downloading again and if possible from another source.

Or, does it just not show up in a particular program's list of fonts?

This opens a whole new can of worms.

In case it isn't obvious already, I have never seen or heard of this happening before.

If you open the c:\windows\fonts folder and click on the file pull down menu, is there an "install font" option?

On a totally unrelated subject. When was the last time you ran Windows Update?

Barch, here is the situation. I downloaded some zip fonts from www.pcfonts.com & www.fontfreak.com. Unzipped each of them to C:\windows\fonts. They show up in the directory. When going to start > settings > control panel > fonts > file I do not get the option of “Install New Fonts” thus Microsoft word, excel, Paint Shop Pro etc do not pick up the font.

I have tried all the above suggestions (except regedit) and nothing works. I am not sure if the font is corrupted since when double clicking on the font a pop-up box comes up showing how the font should look.

A windows update will probably help this as barch said. But it's rather easy to manually regedit it in.

Especially if you have a slow connection to the net, we all know how super fast the Microsoft updates run...

Well, I'm checking the tech the support docs at microsoft and came across this one. I had no idea there was a limit. But, get this: "Note that the Windows 95 Resource Kit incorrectly states that there is no limit to the number of TrueType fonts you can install in Windows 95 and Windows 98."

So, my next question to JBA is:
How many fonts do you have installed?

I gotta admitt, you got me stumped. At this point I'd try running windows update. See if that helps. It sure can't hurt. Then do the regedit carson outlined above.

If none of that works...

You're looking at reinstalling windows. How bad do you want these fonts?

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling a font you already have on your PC? It's just a longshot, but this might clue you into which is the problem - Windows or the new fonts . If you uninstall one you have (and don't really use) and are unable to put it back, then you'll know it has something to do with Windows.
