New York's Aaron Garcia tabbed Arena Football League Offensive Player of the Year
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (August 17, 2001) - New York Dragons quarterback Aaron Garcia was named the Arena Football League Offensive Player of Year today. Garcia, a seven-year veteran of the AFL, tossed a league record 104 touchdown passes this season and led the Dragons to an 8-6 record and a berth in the playoffs.

Garcia, a Sacramento State product, took the AFL by storm in 2001, leading the league in total offense (4,547), touchdown passes (104), passing yards (4,515) and pass completion percentage (69.6). He passed for 300 yards or more in 11 of 14 games in 2001, including a stretch of seven straight 300-yard games. His season was highlighted with an AFL record 11 touchdown passes in a 99-68 win over the Carolina Cobras on July 7. He earned First Team All-Arena honors and broke the Arena Football League mark for passing yards in a season (4,515) surpassing Clint Dolezel's mark of 4,336 set in 1999.

Other candidates for Offensive Player of the Year included: OS James Bowden (Tampa Bay), OS Eddie Brown (Indiana), OS Siaha Burley (Orlando), OS Lamont Cooper (Oklahoma), QB Clint Dolezel (Grand Rapids), QB Raymond Philyaw (Indiana) and OS Kevin Swayne (New York).
