If you listened to best of yesterday with their intern Brian, you'll understand this story.

August 29, 2001 -- Turns out, Tommy Parks was too charming for his own good.
In a bizarre development, the Jets' backup punter was snared in several lies yesterday, resulting in an impromptu conference call where Parks came clean with his outlandish fibbing.

The most severe fabrication involved - welcome to this week's theme - Parks lying about his age.

"I've been instructed by [baseball] coaches because I'm in great physical condition to not even worry about it or tell people another age because . . . what matters is what you can do," Parks said, defending himself in a conference call with Jets beat reporters. "It's not an age because age is only a number."

Yes, it usually is just that. But not yesterday.

Parks-gate began innocently enough yesterday at Hofstra with Parks - who's been pressed into service this preseason due to Tom Tupa's hip flexor - holding court with reporters when the locker rooms opened.

At that point, the ebullient Parks regaled the throngs with stories of life in minor league baseball, claiming that he spent six seasons bouncing between the Red Sox and Padres organizations and reaching as high as AAA status. Later, Parks - whose birthdate in the Jets media guide is listed as Oct. 14, 1971 - answered a reporter's question about his age by professing to be 29.

Parks' assertions, however, set off bells in the press office. Subsequent phone calls to Mississippi State, where Parks went to school from 1986-90, revealed that Parks wasn't 29 at all. John Cade, assistant director of media relations, confirmed that Bulldog records have Parks being born on Oct. 14, 1968, making him nearly 33.

Making the matter even more interesting was that a check with the 49ers, where Parks spent training camp last season, had him listed as being born in 1970, making him 30. Parks also told Post beat writer Mark Cannizzaro last week that he was 27.

"I've been going by [the age of 29] for so long, it has actually become part of me," Parks said curiously.

Another part of Parks' history that has come into question is his baseball career. According to Hal's Sports Database and Minor League Baseball, Parks never spent time with either the Boston or San Diego organizations, toiling only for independent league teams instead.

"Some people won't even look at you," Parks said of lying about his age. "They'll automatically turn you away."

Parks, an aspiring actor, also claimed that his Texas-based talent agent, Mike Beatty, has told him that he was one of Elvis Presley's best friends. The sideburn-clad punter is a self-admitted Elvis freak, and his cousin is an Elvis impersonator.

Whether the stunning revelations have any effect on Parks' tenure with the team remains to be seen.

The 6-2, 225-pounder - who says that he fielded offseason interest from the Giants and Packers - has filled in admirably for Tupa during the preseason, averaging 41.4 yards on 17 kicks.

"The Packers and Giants both tried to sign me," Parks claimed.

But reached last night by The Post, Giant officials denied ever having interest in the punter.

Did he also show up at work with a bandage on his head? "I had to get 3 stitches"... "OK, I didn't get stitches, but there's a big scratch there"... "What? You don't see a scratch?"
