Giants solve kicking problem with Andersen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moving to address one of the team's most glaring preseason problems, the New York Giants on Wednesday afternoon signed unrestricted free agent kicker Morten Andersen, the third-leading scorer in NFL history.

The sides agreed to a one-year contract for the veteran minimum base salary of $477,000. The deal also includes an incentives package.

Andersen, 41, passed a team physical examination Tuesday evening and then impressed the Giants coaches and management officials with a Wednesday morning audition during which he reportedly converted 14 of 15 field-goal tries, including three beyond 50 yards. New York also worked out veteran Brad Daluiso, who had been the Giants' place-kicker for the past eight seasons.

Interest in Andersen heightened when Jaret Holmes and John Markham, the two kickers in training camp, struggled throughout the preseason. The Giants waived Holmes to clear a roster spot for Andersen, who also drew interest from the San Francisco 49ers.

"There is one thing missing in my career, a Super Bowl ring, and that's why I even made this trip," said Andersen, who played the last six seasons for the Atlanta Falcons. "This is a solid, veteran team, one that is going to be in every game it plays. And for that kind of team, one that could go back to the Super Bowl, I feel it's wise to have a veteran (kicker) who has been in every clutch situation imaginable."

Andersen has been working out regularly at the Falcons' old training complex in Suwanee, Ga., waiting for a roster opening. Still possessed with one of the strongest legs in the game, Andersen is probably a future Hall of Fame member, and few kickers have connected on so many last-minute, game-winning field goals.

Testimony to his leg strength is the fact that Andersen had the second-most touchbacks on kickoffs in the league last season.

The 19-year veteran has converted 441 of 562 field-goal attempts and his 1,938 points rank behind only Gary Anderson (2,059) and George Blanda (2,002). Andersen is the leading scorer in the history of both the Falcons and the New Orleans Saints, and he holds the NFL record for most field goals of 50 yards or more, with 37.

His 28 game-deciding kicks also represent an NFL record.

In 2000, he converted 25 of 31 field goals and scored 98 points for the Falcons, but the team opted this year to go with younger candidates at the position.

"That was their decision," Andersen said of the Falcons. "I knew I would have to move on, and it's been a long wait, but I also knew things would work out for me."
