Lewis says he'll retire if he loses to Rahman again.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Lennox Lewis won't fight again if he loses his rematch with WBC-IBF heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman.

``If I can't win this fight, why should I go on?'' the 36-year-old Lewis said Wednesday at the second news conference in two days for the Nov. 17 bout.

The boxers opened the fight hype Tuesday in Rahman's hometown of Baltimore.

Lewis, a prohibitive favorite when he was knocked out in the fifth round by a single Rahman right hand April 22 in South Africa, is a 3-1 pick to win the title back at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

``He believes he can do the same thing again,'' Lewis said. ``I'm telling you he can't.''

Said the 28-year-old Rahman: ``I don't give Lennox any credibility. I listened to his statements before the first fight. None of them came true. Why should I listen to him?''

Lewis declined to blame the loss on his preparation or lack thereof. He instead suggested Rahman landed a lucky punch.

``You can't walk into the ring and not get hit. That punch that got through was his lottery punch,'' Lewis said

``He's definitely right,'' Rahman responded.

``I cashed in on it.''

Rahman was given his title shot only four fights after he was knocked out in eighth round by Oleg Maskaev on Nov. 6, 1999.

``That's the best thing ever happened to me,'' Rahman said. ``It helped me get this fight. It changed my attitude toward boxing. I learned you can't take anybody lightly, and you've got to give 100 percent.''

Lewis sounded a similar theme Wednesday.

The loss to Rahman ``was a wakeup call,'' the former champion from Britain said. ``It ignited a flame in me to come back to the game and do it right. I've been there before and I know how to get there again.''

Lewis lost the WBC title when he was knocked down by a right hand and stopped in the second round by Oliver McCall on Sept. 24, 1994. He regained the title when McCall stopped fighting in the fifth round Feb. 7, 1997.

Rahman, who signed a promotional contract with Don King after becoming champion, wanted to have another fight before giving Lewis a rematch. Lewis went to court, and a federal judge ruled Rahman had to fight Lewis or not fight anyone for 18 months.

Rahman, who got $1.5 million for the first fight, is to get a minimum of $10 million. Lewis, who received $7 million in April, is expected to get about $10 million this time.

The winner stands to make much more in a championship defense against Mike Tyson. A Lewis victory would send a Tyson fight into negotiations between HBO, which has Lewis under contract, and Showtime, which has a deal with Tyson.

Although the rematch will be carried by TVKO, HBO's pay-per-view arm, Rahman is a free agent, having rejected a multifight deal with HBO.

I want a Lewis-Tyson fight before he calls it a career.

EDIT --

Why pay for a fight: A funny thing happened during taping of popular ESON program

Rahman, Lewis Wrestle During Taping

By ED SCHUYLER JR.
.c The Associated Press

Call it the "Mickey Mouse Maul."

Hasim Rahman and Lennox Lewis exchanged words, chest bumps, then wrestled on the floor during an interview Thursday at ESPN Zone at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif.

Since they are supposed to fight for about $10 million each on pay-per-view Nov. 17 in Las Vegas, the scuffle could have driven their accountants, managers, HBO executives and promoter Don King goofy.

The only injury was to a table. No punches were thrown.

"I'm sorry about the table," Lewis said through a fight publicist.

The scuffle broke out while they were being interviewed by Gary Miller on "Up Close" on ESPN.

Lewis obviously was upset by a comment Rahman made earlier on a radio show.

"Why did you say I was gay? I'm not gay," said Lewis, who will try to regain the titles he lost to Rahman on a fifth-round knockout in South Africa.

"I said you were acting gay, taking it to the court," said Rahman, referring to Lewis filing suit to force Rahman into a rematch before he made a championship defense against anyone else.

Lewis then made a remark about Rahman's sister.

"Don't say anything about my family," the champion said.

The two men then stood up, bumping chests as they exchanged words. Lewis shoved Rahman, and they wrestled one another to the floor, with Rahman on top before he was pulled off. They then briefly scuffled again.

"What I don't understand is that a true heavyweight champion would not disrespect an opponent with unjustified taunts and jibes," Lewis said later in a statement. "Today, Rock woke up the lion within me. Now I'm going to crush the Rock in the ring, regain my belt and bring some dignity back to the heavyweight crown."

If Lewis wins, would he be the "Lion King?"

The hype for the fight began Tuesday at a news conference in Rahman's hometown of Baltimore. Another new conference was held Wednesday in New York at which Lewis said there was no way Rahman could beat him again and that he would retire if it happened.

Still another was scheduled for Friday at Las Vegas.

The fight will be carried by TVKO, HBO's pay-per-view arm.

Lewis-Rahman Brawl on Up Close

Heavyweight boxers Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman brawled during the taping of ESPN's Up Close show today. The two boxers tumbled across the set and wrecked the interview desk. Neither seemed to be seriously hurt in the skirmish that lasted more than two minutes.

wow, that was some funny shit, i just got home from the mets game and turned on sportscenter. They showed all the boxing scuffles in recent memory. That Lewis Rahman thing today was hilarious.

Then when Sportscenter ended, Stuart Scott and Rich Eisen pretended to be pissed and started wrestling each other!! FUNNY SHIT!!
