Johnson decides on Bucs

ESPN.com news services

TAMPA, Fla. – Free-agent quarterback Brad Johnson accepted a five-year contract from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday after also considering an offer from the Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens reportedly offered Johnson a four-year, $22 million deal. The Bucs' offer was believed to be for slightly less money than Baltimore's.

"Brad has a sincere interest in playing for Tampa Bay," Phil Williams, Johnson's agent, said before Johnson decided to go for it. "But you have to do what you have to do."

The Bucs picked up former Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf on waivers late last week.

The Ravens reportedly made a similar $22 million offer to former Chiefs quarterback Elvis Grbac.

The Bucs had several things in their favor. Johnson was a Vikings quarterback while Bucs coach Tony Dungy was defensive coordinator in Minnesota. Also, Johnson played at Florida State and currently lives in Tallahassee. However, Johnson is also friendly with Ravens coach Brian Billick, who was his offensive coordinator in Minnesota.

Johnson, who played for the Redskins last season, had also planned to visit Kansas City on Wednesday before choosing Tampa Bay.

It's obvious the BUCS needed a quarterback and that's what they went out and did. I think you got a proven #1 guy, and I think he could help out the kid King, and who knows how they'll do.

they were only 2.2 million under the cap before they signed him...i don't see why they would pick up Johnson after they picked up Leaf and already have King....they'll probably trade King that's the only reason i can think of for signing Johnson

Hey he's not breathing. Don't people usually breathe?

I agree Froy.
The question is now can they re-sign Ronde Barder?I hope that the answer is no and we see him in Giant blue very soon.

Without Johnson, I'd say this is the perfect time for the Redskins to pick up Doug Flutie. He'd be great energy for that team, he could give them the fire and leadership that they need.

Brad Johnson is a great fit for Tampa, and Tampa has done a good job settling their Quarterback situation. I see no way that Barber is gonna stay there and he probably will wind up in Giant Blue, or perhaps with the Jets to play for Herman Edwards.
