YANKEES, NETS, DEVILS FORM TV NETWORK
By RONALD BLUM AP Sports Writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW YORK (AP) . The New York Yankees formed their new television network Monday, calling it YES and promising to broadcast about 125 games next season.

YankeeNets, the parent company of the World Series champions as well as the NBA's New Jersey Nets and the NHL's New Jersey Devils, owns 60 percent of the new regional sports network, Yankees Entertainment and Sports.

The remaining 40 percent was sold for about $345 million to a group that includes Goldman Sachs & Co., Quadrangle Group LLC, Amos Hostetter Jr. and Leo Hindery Jr., who will be the network's chief executive.

``The agenda is to be up and running around the first of March, when spring training begins for the Yankees, and we will segue over time, subject to prior agreements, to the involvement of the Nets and the Devils,'' Hindery said.

The Nets' contract with Cablevision Systems Corp. runs through the 2001-02 season, and Yes will start broadcasting the basketball team in October 2002, televising 75 games in the initial season. The Devils have six seasons remaining in their contract with Cablevision.

By forming their own network, the Yankees hope to increase their broadcasting revenue, already the highest in baseball.

Cablevision's Madison Square Garden Network has held rights to the Yankees since 1989, broadcasting about 100 games in recent seasons and selling 50 per year to an over-the-air network, with baseball's national networks televising the remainder.

Starting next year, the amount of Yankees' games sold to a New York over-the-air station will be cut in half to about 25 a season. News Corp.'s WNYW is in its third season of broadcasting the team, which had been on WPIX for 48 years.

MSG is paying the Yankees a $52 million rights fee this season as part of an agreement worked out after MSG sued to prevent the Yankees from forming their own network for 2001. The team is paying MSG $30 million to settle the lawsuit that stopped it from forming the network.

YES immediately will start selling ads for next season, and hiring broadcasters and technical crews. It also must negotiate to be carried by New York area cable operators . primarily Cablevision, AOL Time Warner Inc. and Comcast Corp. . a process that often gets testy, with threats to keep teams off the air.

``It's a difficult relationship,'' Hindery said. ``I've been fairly outspoken for the need for responsible behavior here.''

Hindery, the former president of AT&T Broadband, said the prices cable operators pay to regional sports networks range from 85 cents to $2.70 per month per subscriber, with the high in Chicago. He wants YES included on basic cable and not sold as a premium service.

In addition to Yankees' games, Hindery said the network will carry pregame and postgame shows for all three teams. The YankeeNets also will show selected games on tape from the Manchester United soccer team in England and will develop or buy enough programming to run 24 hours a day throughout the year.

The economic slowdown could hurt ad sales, already difficult because of the uncertainty over which systems will carry the network next year.

``It's going to be tough to sell ads without eyeballs, that's for sure,'' Hindery said.
