courtesy metsonline.net:

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS: Talk about classless... these are your World Champions. In today's Newark Star-Ledger, there's a piece about how New York Yankees reliever Mike Stanton has made sniping comments at the Mets, saying that their crosstown rivals made their contributions to the victims of the World Trade Center disaster public in an attempt at self-promotion. Among the Mets, Bobby Valentine -- who lost a close friend in the ordeal -- and Al Leiter were most deeply offended. "If you're asked to have a leadership responsibility in the community, then how can you not be public with something like that?" Valentine said. "I don't get it. I don't think giving of your time, your money or your energy, in a public or private way, is bad. I think the offensive thing that's done is if someone has something to give and then refuses to, if they choose not to. I don't think that's the spirit of the time, that that's proper. ... At this time of need, there's need for more than the dollars. There's need for some people who are leaders to do the right thing to let people know they are doing the right thing." Leiter was even more animated. "I think it's an easy way out and a safe way out to say, 'Yeah, we're doing it, but we don't want to say,'" Leiter said. "I think the world and baseball fans of New York would like to know what Mike Stanton and Roger Clemens are giving. It would give them a better feeling. ... We're not doing it for the publicity. We're doing it because it's right. There's no part of (self-promotion). That ticks me off."

Hammer stop looking for trouble. Yes, he made a stupid comment, and he should not have said anything about what the Mets have done. However, from today's NY Daily News:

quote:

The Yankees came under criticism earlier this week for not being as visible as the Mets, who spent time visiting hospitals and helping pack relief supplies for rescuers at Shea Stadium before they left town to resume playing.

The Yankees held a publicly visible team prayer at their first workout after the Sept. 11 attacks and also visited hospitals and rescuers. But when the Mets announced they would donate a day's pay to a benefit fund, the Yankees found themselves in the position of being asked what they planned to do. And that, some Mets theorized, might have made the Yankees feel more defensive than they needed to be.

The Yankees were just trying to keep a low profile and not make a big deal out of how much money they were giving or what they were doing. I am sure most if not all of the Yankees gave big contributions but just did not want to make a big deal out of it. All this is a stupid comment by Stanton that is getting blown up by the media.

I dont care how big of a yankee ass kisser you are teenweek, but how can you defend what Stanton said??!! Those have to rank amongst the most ignorant and most inappropriate comments in the history of sport.

Stop kissing Yankee ass Teenweek and try to be a little realistic.

Cluster, read my reply. I did not defend Stanton. I said it was a stupid comment. I was defending the yankees because they were trying to keep it low profile. Stanton had no right to say what he said about the Mets because they have been great fro the city. By the Yankees not taking it to the press does not mean they are not doing anything.

Today's NY Post gives a differnt view of the "controversy"
NY Post Article

Yankee player rep Mike Stanton, who made the announcement, denies there was any shot taken.

"That's pretty weak," said Valentine, while pointing he only felt this way "if" the Yankees' intention was to discredit the Mets.

Okay, Granted Stantons comments did come off in a bad light. But they weren't meant to discredit what they Mets have been doing. They have been doing alot. So have the Yankees. The yankees have done many things, just haven't been made public. That's there choice.

Paul O'neil hasn't been playing the last couple of games because of injury. The last road trip he stayed in NY. Every day since then he's been at loading docks and fire houses helping out. Is that being reported? Thats not the issue....The issue is that there helping out, PERIOD!!!
