Tagliabue: Super Bowl in N.Y. 'one of the options'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Playing the Super Bowl in New York is among the possibilities under consideration by the NFL in its effort to keep a full season.

The idea of holding the title game at Giants Stadium on Feb. 3 was proposed by New York Sen. Charles Schumer as a way to help the city recover from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Sunday it's "one of the options."

"It would be one way to help rebuild the city," Tagliabue said. "But there would also be logistical problems and security problems. It's one of many ideas under consideration."

Schumer said the move would represent a "symbol of triumph over terrorism."

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said it would be "terrific" if the Super Bowl were at Giants Stadium.

"They should just decree that the Giants and the Jets are going to be in it and stop all this nonsense with all these other teams," he said.

Tagliabue spent much of last week negotiating with the National Association of Auto Dealers, trying to switch dates with the group, which is scheduled to meet in New Orleans on Feb. 3.

The Super Bowl had been scheduled for New Orleans on Jan. 27, but the NFL wants to delay the playoffs a week because of the week it took off after the attacks in New York and Washington.

A switch with the auto dealers has hit a number of snags.

"They have a lot of exhibitors who already have reservations and tickets," Tagliabue said.

Asked about reservations made by fans headed for the Super Bowl, he replied: "That's our problem. It's what we have to deal with."

Tagliabue said he is exploring the possibility of an accelerated playoff system that would keep the Super Bowl in New Orleans on the scheduled date. The NFL also is looking at other cities, including Los Angeles, Tampa and Miami for Feb. 3.

The shortened playoff format would mean games on the Wednesday following the final Sunday of the season, which is now scheduled for Jan. 6.

The NFL also could reduce playoff teams from 12 to eight and play the normal schedule, which would culminate with the Super Bowl on its scheduled date.

Schumer appeared in Manhattan on Sunday with two former New York football stars -- Ottis Anderson of the Giants and Marty Lyons of the Jets.

The senator said a Super Bowl would pump $400 million into the local economy, easing the burden on the hotels, restaurants and entertainment industry.

"It sends one message loud and clear: We are not afraid," he said.

I think it would be fitting to have the SuperBowl in the Meadowlands. I don't know, though, if it would boost the economy in Manhatten. Would people go out and eat in the city or stay in Jersey?
From the sporting aspect I would love to see hte Super Bowl in a cold weather stadium.,

The only people who can say how cold it was, were people who went to a late XFL game to see the Hitmen (not many). Considering the game will start 6:30 or 7pm that night.

The NFL Would never do that. Sure they say they are considering it, but they are probably just saying that to be nice. I doubt they are giving any serious consideration to bringing the game here.

They dont want to deal with the security issues, and most importantly for them, they don't want the game played in 20 Degree Weather, so that God for Bid, Real Hardcore Football Fans would actually be at the Superbowl, instead of the phony people who dont watch a Football game all year that wind up at these games.

Unfortunately, the Superbowl is more of a show, than it is about Football. Theres a reason why the Superbowl is always in a Dome or a Warm Weathered Location, that certainly won't change.

Yeah, this isn't going to happen. It's just good politics and it sells papers.

I'm going to hijack this thread now to prove a theory I've been working on. Now I know Froy posts Met and Cowboy news, and Faceman is into racing, and Fez pretends to like baseball, but hear me out...

THEOREM: Mods don't read the Sports Forum

PROOF:
1. At least one mod usually reads every post on oa.com.
2. Most posters, especially regulars, receive statuses from mods, for various reasons relating to their posts. (See "Care and Feeding of Moderators, 2001 Edition" for more info)
3. Francine Banger has 1850+ posts and no status, possibly a modern record.
4. FB posts almost exclusively in Sports. (I don't consider Wrestling to be a Forum ;))
5. FB is arguably the most knowledgable poster in Sports, and has been for a while.
6. If mods read all the posts in Sports, FB would almost surely have a status like 'Who needs the Elias Sports Bureau when you've got me?'

ipso facto, thus then, three dots in a triangle: Mods don't read Sports. Q.E.D.

Now I could have taken this further: therefore mods don't like sports, therefore all mods are gay. But I won't, because we all know that's patently untrue. :)

I await your feedback on my research...

Interesting. I do have to say though, that masturbation is a much better use of time than coming up with cockamamie theories about the Sports forum and gay mods. Just my opinion though, carry on.

Oh, and about the Bowl being played at the Meadowlands, I would love to see it, but it ain't happenin.

hi, did someone call my name????????

and now onto the reason i replied to this topic. from espn.com

The NFL and National Auto Dealers Association have reached a tentative agreement toswap dates in New Orleans and allow Super Bowl XXXV to be played at the Superdome on Feb. 3, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Monday. The deal is contingent on the NADA Board of Directors giving the plan its approval.

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has notified the mayor of New Orleans that it appears the Super Bowl will be held a week later that previously scheduled at the Superdome.

The Super Bowl had been scheduled for New Orleans on Jan. 27, but the NFL wanted to delay the playoffs a week because of the week it took off after the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. The NFL also was looking at other cities, including Los Angeles, Tampa and Miami, for Feb. 3 if the game was unable to be played in New Orleans.

On Sunday, New York Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer proposed that the Super Bowl could be held at Giants Stadium on the first Sunday in February. Schumer said a Super Bowl could be worth $400 million to the city. That estimate, according his Schumer's spokesperson Bradley Tusk, was based on research group analysis and previously published estimates of the Super Bowl's economic impact on host cities.

New Orleans is a decent team. Let's say they are playing in the game before the Superbowl to get in the Superbowl and they have the better record. How are they going to play their game at home if there's a bunch of cars on the field. They'll have to play at the other teams site and get fucked out of home field advantage.

That make any sense?

haha look Francine, I got you a status >)

... I'm sure the NFL/NADA deal includes a contingency for the Saints. Plus, the Superdome might not be in use - it's not a car show, just a convention of car dealers.

The Rams looked unbeatable at the beginning of last year too, and it took a choke job by the Lions to even get them in the Playoffs.

Francine, I know we butt heads a lot, but congrats on the status. As a sports journalist, I will try with all my might to take your crown one day :) I still think Faceman must be a blue shirts fan :)

The Super Bowl should be in New York. If the NFL wanted to convince us they aren't about corporate sponsorships and just about the game, this would be it. (I agree it's ironic that to prove that, the SB would have to be played just outside of New York.)
