Benitez is coming back. Ha ha ha!

On Opening Day, 2002, Mets GM Steve Phillips expects Armando Benitez to be the club's closer.

"I have no thought or idea of trading him," Phillips said before the Mets' 5-1 loss to the Pirates last night. "All I know is he is the leading closer in the National League right now. We got to the World Series with him. We didn't win it last year, but I'd like to take my chances with Armando in the bullpen if I ever got in the World Series again."

Benitez's big game track record isn't good. In case you haven't heard, Benitez didn't close three- and four-run ninth inning leads against the Braves the past two weekends.

Next season, the 28-year-old Benitez will be in the third year of a club-friendly, four-year, $22 million contract. Phillips ruled out sending Benitez to a sports psychologist to try to figure out his big game troubles.

"I think you make it more of an issue by doing that," Phillips said. "In a 162 game season, every game is a big game. He's saved [43 of 46 games], he's had a chance to save."

Hopefully he isn't staying here. If that happens I'll personally strangle Steve Philips myself! Maybe he'll "smack his bitch up" again and we'll see what happens.

Leave it to Yankee fans to rub salt in the wounds.....

Realistically, this is no surprise. What are they supposed to do / say?
He has 2 more years on his contract, and they don't get even close to the playoffs the past 3 years without him. Where are they going to get his replacement? Are Yanks going to trade Mariano? I think not.

Like it or not, I think it is easier to try to fix him than replace him, and there is no way they will simply release him.

Too bad they couldn't go back in time and include him in a trade for Sheffield.

Give Benitez a freakin break. The guy has pitched more innings this year than ever before, was perfect for his first 40 tries, has the club record for saves, and now that he's starting to show the effects from being overworked you want him out of here? When Piazza is overworked, everyone expects a downfall. When other reliever's arms fall off, no one demands they get shipped out. Now that Benitez, one of the best closers in the league, finally broke down, everyone wants his head. Cut the man a break and blame Valentine for pitching him so damn much.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Damn it! well i guess this means we will defintely win against the Pirates and Brewers, but lose against every contender in the NL. How about Sean Casey and Danny Graves for Benitez and Zeile? That would make more sense.

ferret what the hell are you smoking. If it was not for benitez, the Mets might be in first place now or a game or 2 back. Thanks to Benitez they are out of it.

A great closer= mariano Rivera
A bum= Armando Benitez

Like all the Mets fans have said, he does great against the Expos, the Pirates and other sucky teams, but when the game is on the line, the last reliever you want in there is Benitez.

You can't play that game; they don't get that close if he doesn't close out the expos, etc.

more like
Great Closer = Mariano Rivera
Frustrating Tease = Armando Benitez.

Despite his penchant for not coming through in the big spots, he's still probably in the top 10.

Now Doug Sisk - There was a closer :)

You cant blame the fact that the Mets arent in First Place right now on solely on Benitez.
Their are PLENTY of reasons why the Mets arent in First Place. Like the fact that they played 4 1/2 months of shitty baseball. They couldnt buy a run for that span of time. They got 10 Homeruns out of Todd Zeile. Alfonzo cant even hit .250. Ventura is absolute Garbage. Their Outfield cant produce the numbers of 1 solid Player. The list goes on and on and on.

And as far as going back in time to put Benitez in a deal for Sheffield, No Way.

You cant get Sheffield here. You know why? The guy is a cancer in the clubhouse, you don't need a guy like that in your outfield. Benny Agbayani is just fine. If you wanted a guy like Juan Gonzalez? He's not the answer either because he's not a New York type of guy. You dont need a guy like that in your outfield. If you wanted Manny Ramirez, forget about that too. The guy is an American League Player. He can't play the Field. Benny Agbayani in Left Field is just fine though. You wanted Alex Rodriguez? No Way, the Guy wanted a Tent!!! We cant have that. 50 Homeruns would have been nice, But we are better off with our Shortstop hitting 3 Homeruns, and our concessions being tent free.

And if you don't get the heavy sarcasm, well then move on.

Not as glorious as the day about 2 weeks from now when the Oakland A's have advance to play the Seattle Mariners for the American League Championship.

Playoff News From The Future:

Banged up Yanks beaten in 4. No new deal for Torre.
Seattle squeeks by A's in 5.

Seattle then kicks national league ass. And a truly great
man and manager in Lou Pinella gets champagne in his
teary eyes.
