i am about to vent: i am such a die-hard yankee fan and andy pitched great and they are down 1-0 in the bottom of the 8th. they just arent getting the breaks that they got in the past. example: posade missing a HR by a few feet, bernie's foul ball turned fair in the 1st.. or how about in game one, soriano getting caught stealing at 3rd or justice called out while on 1st base. well i am definlty not making excuses i just am so annoyed and frusrated. one fucking run they cant get. sorry about just blabbering on but i am getting mad just watching jeter at bat with a man on 1st.. well hopefully they can score a run. it really doesnt look that way. COUNT ON THE MOOSE IN GAME THREE and hey ya never know. "in a perfect world we would all be yankees"

"i hate people that dont get it!"

In a perfect world, we'd be up 2-0. Clemens would have not pussed out in the first game and the yankees would of hit the snot out of the ball. But were not, and now were down 0-2 and it doesn't look good from here.....

I still have confidence that we can turn this around. Mussina pitches next and he has been the Yankees best pitcher since the all star break. For the most part his last few games El Duque has pitched well and if it makes it to game 5, it's a crap shoot with Clemens vs Mulder again. Even if they don't, this team made the city proud for 4 World Series titles in 5 years. Not bad and I am proud I am a Yankee fan. I will miss Paul O' Neill after this year is over whenever that may be. He has been a great Yankee.

Look at the bright side, if the A's do beat the Yankees it is almost assured Steinbrenner will bring in Giambi. And we will always be better than the Mets.

The thing that scares me is they're not palying with heart. Jeter looks like he expects to win...he's been spoiled so far and it just seems like he's not playing with the fire we've seen him play with the past 5 years. O'Neill is pushing himself too far and it's hurting his game tremendosley...at this rate he's gonna burn himself out. Justice....ehhhh TAKE HIM OUT!!! I say bench him, put in Spencer...he's completely useless. Maybe being down 2 games gong to Oakland will light a fire under their asses. Only players I see wanting to win are Pettitte and Soriano...and Knoblauch, at times.

If I seem a little scattered There's an empty space where something used to beat

Let it be me, I'll be your poetry in motion. A desolate island when you sail the deep blue ocean. All your tomorrows for all your yesterdays. I'll be a lamb or a lion you can tame. And I hope and I pray that my offer will find its way. Yes I know there'll come a day, when in return I'll need the same. Let it be me, the star who guides you through the night. I'll make it worth your while.

You forgot Tino. He is the only one who has done anything productive in this series hitting wise.

Well might as well bring this to the top for the start of the M's-Yankees series.
pitching matchups and times for the first 4 games.
GAME 1: at SEA (FOX)
(Pettitte vs. Sele)
Wed, Oct 17 - 4:20 PM

GAME 2: at SEA (FOX)
(Mussina vs. Garcia)
Thu, Oct 18 - 8:20 PM

GAME 3: at NYY (FOX)
(Moyer vs. Hernandez)
Sat, Oct 20 - 4:20 PM

GAME 4: at NYY
(Abbott vs. Clemens)
Sun, Oct 21 - 7:50 PM

I think with the comeback agains the A's that the yankees will be riding right into this series with a bullet. I think if they can strike early then Pettite will step up his game and shut the M's down. The big thing for them to do is to contain Icherio of that is possible.
My prediction for game one is
Yankees 4 M's 1

BTW I love the idea of using Mo for the 2 inning saves. IF he can keep this up then all we need is 5-6 strong innings from the starters, set up with mendoza and stanton then close the door with Mo...

side note- damn MLB for the 4pm start time and double damn my boss for not seeing things my way and letting me go home early...

LETS GO YANKEES.

Sheet,
I gotta hand it to you; It is rare that people go out on the limb to predict final scores in baseball games :)

Seriously,
I do think Yanks have the advantage in pitching matchups except game 3, but the comeback by yankees is nullified by comeback by mariners in their series.

Yankee strength of starting pitching is what they need to get this series.

It will also be interesting to see if Jeff Nelson and Lou Pinella have extra juice against their former team.

side note:
Everyone was bitching for years that playoffs and world series started too late for kids, and therefore baseball wasn't marketing properly.
Now when games start at 4:20 (perfect for kids) working people get screwed.

The records may not stack up but in these type of games you cant forget that Orlando is CLUTCH, he is good with pressure, all he has to do is think back to his days in Cuba where losing a game like this could mean very bad things.
Orlando Hernadez playoff stats
games 12
wins 9
loses 1
era 2.27

I would rank him right up there with Rivera in top playoff pitchers. However no one can top rivera

Rivera career playoff stats
games 44
wines 4
loses 0
saves 21
earned runs 5
ERA 0.66
if they can get the ball to Mo in these games the M's dont have a chance.

I will attempt to look at this in an objective manner, and matchup position by position, since i am in the yankee thread.

1st base: Olerud vs Martinez
Advantage: Push.

2nd base: Soriano vs Boone
Advantage: Mariners

3rd base: Scott Brosius vs David Bell
Advantage: Mariners

Shortstop: Jeter vs McLemore
Advantage: Yankees

Left Field: Knoblauch vs Javier
Advantage: Push

Center Field: Williams vs Cameron
Advantage: Yankees

Right Field: Ichiro vs O'Neill
Advantage: Mariners

Catcher: Posada vs Wilson
Advantage: Yankees

Starting Pitching: Clemens, Pettitte, Mussina vs Garcia, Moyer, Sele
Advantage: Yankees

Relief Pitching: Rivera, Stanton, Mendoza, Hitchcock vs Sasaki, Rhodes, Nelson, Halama
Advantage: Mariners

DH: David Justice vs Edgar Martinez
Advantage: Mariners

Bench: Push.

Coach: Push.

In that analysis: Yankees 4, Mariners 5.
Conclusion: very good competitive series, maybe going 7, i think it will go 6 though. Mariners in 6...but unfortunately, i wouldnt be shocked if it was yankees in 6.

Try dissing Mets fans now, cause we can be objective after all :).

Cluster F i agree with you accept for:

I don't care which zipperheads are in the mariners bullpen. in october rivera is the end all be all of relievers. Both him and stanton have postseason ERA's under one, and mendoza is probably the best long man out of the pen for either team. Definately give that one to the yankees.

And I'm still here waiting there, to catch you if you fall
I don't know why I care so much, when I shouldn't care at all

Here is another one CLuster. What the F are you smoking? Yes Pinella is a great manager but he has done nothing in the postseason Torre has managed 4 World Series winners. Advantage Torre

quote:

Bench: Push.

You have O'Neill, Justice, Sojo (all Mets fans should remember him) on the Yankees. Hey they are both good enough for a hit when needed. Advantage yankees.

And lastly Soriano is having a hell of a playoffs while Boone has done little if anything.

Sheet,

I wasn't dissing Hernandez. I don't however think he is the same pitcher this year, and he is facing arguably the M's best starter, Moyer.

Hey, even having advantage in 3 out of 4 starters is great. That's the Yankee's main advantage. (along with shortstop)

Austin,
This is a Yankee playoff thread; unless I'm mistaken its not the Rah, Rah, we all are great thread. I've behaved here; I didn't choose this thread to post anti-yankee crap, even though some others have posted crap in the Crack thread. I even avoided predicting winners, and said Yankees have advantage here. So unless you forgot the smilies, lay off.

Well going into the 9th 2 outs I was starting to think i had esp but oh well, a little flubber and it goes from 4-1 to 4-2 but hey they still win so thats all that matters in my book.

On that note, lets here it for the yankees.... They really did look great today, just like the champions they are... I think Seattle is going to have a really tough time here winning, and after today I am going to say Yankees in 5 maybe 6 if seattle starts to get hot.

Pettite was on the ball tonight, pitched a great game.
The bats were alive which is a great sign for the games to come. Tomorrow nights game should be even better. Mussina is gunning for the first ring. I say tomorrow night Yankees 5 M's 0

THE YANKEES WIN TTTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES IN.

actually, the M's best pitcher, Freddy Garcia is pitching tomorrow on three days rest. regardless, with the way Mussina is pitching lately, i have full confidence that the Yanks will win.

they played a great game today, and hopefully we'll close out this series early.

Yeah, sheet, I noticed the score in the 9th too :)

Typical Yankee baseball, very professional. I didn't know if travel would hurt Yankees, but it wsa never a factor.
Pettite outstanding; Sele outclassed.

I wouldnt say that was totally true... Some of the bats were slumping and there was a couple of wild pitches thrown in there by rivera although I am pretty sure the last one should have been a passed ball and not a wild pitch. I say this because I think that pitch was a little return favor for the ball thrown towards Jeter to knock him off the plate. Also Posada seemed to get a little bit of his glove on it and I think it was catchable so give him the error. But in usual fashion for the yankees when some members slump the others pick up the slack for them. So even though the travel was a little harder on some the others took care of it.
The only thing I was pissed about with this game was the last at bat by Soriano. WTF was he thihking trotting to first thinking he had a home run. I am sure Torre ripped him a new ass for that one.

Well i think since the score was 3-2 if you take the 2 from the m's and add it to the yankees you get the 5 but anyway What a great way to start the series off 2-0... Nice job again tonight. What else is there to say. The Yankees got the job done when they needed to. Lets hear it for Mariano Rivera... He is lights out!!!!!! thank you please drive though....NEXT

Now it is back to Yankee Stadium the crowd is going to be rocking!!!!! Even though you cant count the M's out yet, IT is begining to look pretty bad for them. Boy would I love to see the Yankees sweep at home!!!

Yeah, unfortunately, I don't think they'll be coming back to Seattle now. The Yanks look good, I have to give 'em credit- they're rollin'. The M's will probably take Game 3, but I think that'll be it.

I think the Yankees won the series by winning Game twoTWO!, but Game 3 is a must-win. Now that the world knows its possible to overcome a 2-0 deficit, let's not see it happen twice in the same playoff, okay?

If the Yanks are up 3-0 and Ichiro belts two out in Game 4, so be it... it would be a capping achievement to a brilliant rookie season- let the man have his day.

I just don't see any team - not even the '98 Yankees, beating this group down 2-0 in the ALCS.

AND ANOTHER THING...

Isn't it interesting that the individual achievements of Bonds, Giambi and Ichiro all come tumbling down when October rolls around?

Giambi played solid, and it appears Ichiro will never suck, but they don't have the TEAM the Yankees do.

Even though The Boss spends like a fan, Cashman (and probably Torre) are spending it in the right places... I hated the Wells-Clemens trade three years ago, but look at Rocket contending for his sixth Cy Young and Wells recovering from back surgery and a horrible season in Chicago.

I think it was John Sterling who said Alfonso Soriano would have easily won rookie of the year if it wasn't for Ichiro.

With all these teams griping about the Yankees' spending, perhaps they should start paying attention to building a TEAM, and not bringing in the high-priced free agents... you think Bonds will break the bank to play in the Front Office of Baseball?

[a-rod] Fucking Boras! I coulda been a Met! What's forty homers when you're 20 games out?[/a-rod]

On the flip side of that Isn't it interesting how no matter what kind of year the Yankees have, Once October comes They Yankees start playing like they won 120 games during the year. All I gotta say about this team is one word CLUTCH!!!!

If the Yankees take game three forgetabouit its done in NY.

Dont tell Lou that, right after the game he guranteed that they would be back in Seattle for game 6, but deep down I think he knows he is done... Sorry Lou but this just isnt your year.

I think Game 3 is a must win for the Yankees. You need to kick the Mariners while they are down and beat them into submission. If they get hot again, the Yankees could be in trouble.

This series really is about whomever has a lead by the 6th inning will win the game because the bullpen will dominate. Let's end this series early and don't let the mariners even think they have a chance in this series.

Losing game 3 will kill even the most competitive guys and it will start seeping in that their series is over. If they win tomorrow, they get a whole new life.

The Yankees need to give them a worse beating than Rodney King got from the LAPD.
