Yankees Network Unveiled
YankeeNets LLC on Monday unveiled the YES network, the long-awaited regional sports channel from the parent company of the New York Yankees.

YES, an acronym for Yankees Entertainment and Sports, is headed by CEO Leo Hindery, former Telecommunications Inc. president, and expects to debut next March with rights to broadcast 125-130 regular season Yankees games.

Though no agreements are yet set, if rights become available YES will carry 75 New Jersey Nets basketball games as well as select games of the British soccer team Manchester United. The New Jersey Devils hockey team, which is owned by YankeeNets affiliate Puck Holdings, is expected to join the network in 2007.

YES executives are negotiating with New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania cable operators to carry the channel. Besides Hindery and YankeeNets, YES investors include Goldman Sachs & Co., Quadrangle Group and Amos B. Hostetter Jr., the non-executive chairman.

The network began as a possibility when the Yankees and the Nets merged in March 1999, but solidified when the contract with Cablevision's Madison Square Garden Network expired last year, and, after a court battle, YankeeNets settled with MSG by agreeing last June to pay $30 million for exclusive rights to Yankee baseball.

I read a blurb about the new YES network in the Daily News yesterday and I figured I'd give everyone the heads-up.

Say, I wonder if Opie starts watching the sports on the YES network if the teams start losing? ;)

They'll probably carry all the games that aren't on network television. Games on channel 4 and TNT and whatnot. Just a guess.

Only two. Vs. the Wizards. And M.J.

Meanwhile, I was thinking, the best thing that comes out of this "last Yankees game on MSG" is: Suzyn Waldman is gone! I can't stand her voice! Whenever I watched a Yankee game that Suzyn is calling, I automatically hit the mute button and flip on 'ABC... of course, with my luck, she's likely in a contract with the Yankee organization and she might still call the games...
